Thirteen years of delay is just too long. The Worker Protection Standards designed to protect farmworkers from dangerous pesticides have languished in "internal review" since 2000, while farmworkers and their families continue to experience harm.

Why should safe food be provided for the wealthy, only?

This is one of the biggest reasons I opt for organic (and local) when I am able as it's not just better for the environment we all live in, it is better for those working the fields (including the farmer).

For more immediate reasons see this post on what we are damning babies to so we can have winter tomatoes on our fast food burgers and tacos:
http://www.theecologist.org/News/news_analysis/1033178/chemical_warfare_the_horrific_birth_defects_linked_to_tomato_pesticides.html

These health effects are another way that conventional food is subsidized by outsourcing the medical and other environmental costs onto us (even as it kills us):

Thanks for putting this up and for everyone who noted/promoted it.

Thanks, Nancy, for all you do.

I'd also like to mention that I added a comment to the effects that the companies responsible for these toxins should also be responsible (as, I believe, should all polluting industry be, with accurate attribution of ills to industrial causes, rather than using the industrial victim blame strategy to penalize the population, place industry imperatives as a controlling factor over the right of individual free choice and access to non-GM/gratuitously polluted-for-profit/cost-cutting food/drink/air/products - with accurate GM/toxin labelling on all products - and continue to offload the costs on to victims and society, this gaining them further ever-increasing wealth and power at the expense of planetary life) for not only the medical and other costs of such illnesses and premature deaths as their products/pollution cause, but for compensation to victims and their families.
