ALEC boasts on the "history" section of its website that it first started promoting "such 'radical' ideas as a [educational] voucher system" in 1983 -- the same year as the Reagan administration's "Nation At Risk" report -- taking up ideas first articulat

ALEC is one of the most purely evil organizations I have seen come and go in my lifetime. They are the tea party personified. Their pro forma legislation is being enacted across the country by teapublican majorities in state legislatures, the good news is those majorities will be short lived because our country is not as conservative as the tea party and now that people have had a chance to SEE what ALEC and its puppets are about, those policies and laws will be rejected ultimately, except perhaps in the deep south where institutional racism is deeply embedded in the culture, freeing those people will take whites losing their majority status - that will happen nationwide by 2043, faster in the south, thank goodness, where Texas, New Mexico and Arizona will soon be more than half non-white majorities. Of the children in our country today five and under, more than half are not white. This bodes well for our democracy, sooner rather than later. There will be much to undo before things can be reordered equitably but it WILL happen. And it can't be soon enough for me.

Lots of things started going wrong in this country once Reagan was elected. Basically a raping of us, from Savings & Loans, to Arms for Contras, to Wal-Mart, to Enron, to Haliburton to Monsanto, to Bailing Banks... Fascists for sure. :(

It is one of the Wal-Mart heirs (and his billions) who has been pushing for-profit education for years.

But, I thought we already had private schools...

We have to fight for our public ones. Some things just are not a good idea privatized. Schools, prisons, military... we have to get away from the idea of everything needs to turn a profit. But on that note, if these companies & individuals have that much spare change, then they need to pay more taxes.

Because of course ALEC has your kids best interests at heart, she said facetiously.

Nothing I can add. My friend Gene summed it up quite well.

Control what people can be taught, and you control their perceptions - all for profit and the world well lost...

Noted. Agreed that ALEC is evil. The Koch Bros. along with the Chamber of Commerce is stacking the deck financially in state legislatures all over the U.S. Public funding of charter schools and private schools is terrible. You can tell because the U.S. is no longer "Number One" in anything regarding education.
