Remove Commissioner Liesa Priddy From Florida Panther Decisions PETITION

Animals  (tags: panthers, Florida, wildlife )

- 1040 days ago -
Priddy views the panthers as an obstacle to her and her developer friends from cashing in -- and she's resorted to making things up to get her way. This is no way for a wildlife commissioner to behave and we need to make sure Priddy is removed

Anna - This makes my entire month!!! This petition doesn't tell half the story though...

For one thing, Priddy has over 8 MILLION cleverly stashed away/disguised as a family partnership and a private foundation. So her profits from cattle ranching, rock mining etc. are all 'donated' to her own foundation - which is a legal way to protect wealth for descendants. Assets transferred into a foundation are immune to capital gains taxes, plus the donator still gets a tax deduction for the contribution. Her husband is the principal, so he can draw a salary. Her 9,000+ acre ranch/home is mostly property tax exempt (considered agriculture). And yet: she has been quoted many times saying that she wants to be reimbursed by people who actually DO pay their taxes - people like me just trying to make ends meet - for any predation on her livestock AND monetary incentives to keep her land usage as is. (JB Ranch is located next to Big Cypress National Preserve - the last stronghold for our few remaining panthers.) In her words: taxpayers (not that SHE'S one, mind you) should shoulder the expense of managing FL panthers. Now, I'm not the brightest bulb, but if I have to pay Priddy - a multimillionaire - for any losses (which should really be considered 'the cost of doing business'), shouldn't I be entitled to some of her gains? Furthermore, with her wealth, she could afford to put up what's called jump fencing - but of course, she won't.

As much as I adore Anthony Rogers-Wright (Environmental Action/the petitioner), and love the strong wording and grotesque picture, I fear this effort is doomed.

For one thing, The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is made up of predominantly wealthy ranchers and/or land developers - who are ALL avid hunters, waterfowlers or anglers themselves.

Secondly, all seven commissioners are appointed by Governor Rick Scott - the target recipient. Scott is also a trophy hunter, who took a secret trip to King Ranch to make shady political deals and come home with the buck's head (he wasn't interested in eating venison). He also got a partially paid for vacation on the taxpayer's dime, Hutchcraft (talk about the fox guarding the henhouse!) and money. Big Sugar got a great deal out of it, because with Hutchcraft at the helm, they didn't have to clean up the mess they made in the Everglades. Taxpayers got to foot that bill too, and we're STILL paying for restoration efforts. In short: Scott couldn't care less about the environment or its critters.

Third, the FWC is in a pissing contest with the feds. The federal government recognizes the urgent need to establish breeding colonies to the north - not only for increased habitat and sustenance, but also, to remain genetically viable. Basically, the state won't pay for such efforts.

Finally, let's not forget the hunters' contribution to the panthers' decline. Not only did they start this whole tragic tale with the 1832 bounty on panthers, they also continued to drive them from the southeast into the swamps with their collective itchy trigger fingers. To this day, they persist in their overzealous 'conservation' efforts (ha! Now there's a misnomer if ever there was one) by competing for the panthers' primary food source of deer and wild hogs.

So there it is, and nobody knows the 'Devil in the details' better than Anthony. Bless his big heart. No matter where the commissioners meet, he flies down from New York to make his voice heard. Environmental Action is even trying to raise money to file a lawsuit to stop the bear hunt next month.

Thanks again Anna. Sorry to run off at the mouth. Especially since this is exactly the sort of thing happening in every state. :' -(
