The sight startled beachgoers on Saturday afternoon and set Twitter abuzz. A group called the International Raelian Movement, which believes humans were created by extraterrestrials, says it was responsible.

The swastika as a symbol, dates back thousands of years, long before the Nazis. It was commonly used as a four direction symbol by the Buddhists and the Hindus. Perhaps some day, the stigma will be gone, but it is still too soon. Every time I see a swastika, all I see are Nazis.

Thanks Brian. You are right about the fact that the swastika is an ancient and powerful symbol, and I wish it were possible for it to be returned to its original meaning and significance. I know when I see a swastika, I too immediately see "hate" and "Nazis". Then I feel regret that the symbol has been perverted. A symbol's meaning can't be "reworked", unfortunately. This really is a potent demonstration and lesson on the power of the Unconscious and its archetypes.
