V-Day's ONE BILLION RISING campaign, launched in early 2012, began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. This adds up to 1 billion women and girls.

Today, on the planet, a billion women – one of every three women on the planet – will be raped or beaten in her lifetime. That’s ONE BILLION mothers, daughters, sisters, partners, and friends violated. V-Day REFUSES to stand by as more than a billion women experience violence.

On February 14th, 2013, V-Day's 15th Anniversary, we are inviting one billion women and those who love them to walk out, DANCE, RISE UP, AND DEMAND an end to this violence. One Billion Rising is a promise that we will rise up with women and men worldwide to say, "Enough! The violence ends now."

ONE BILLION RISING is also gaining momentum on social media – the hashtag #1billionrising has become widely used and just this past month #MenRise was created by activists in connection with the campaign as men across the world participate and join One Billion Rising.

Please follow the links and explore the site. Link to V-Day's website included. There are MANY ways to TAKE ACTION, and support this movement.

David, I don't think there is actually a petition on this site, but it you can sign up to get updates on One Billion Rising. You can sign up to get updates on the activities of One billion Rising, and you can explore the links for other ways to take action. On the Start/Join link, there is a tool for entering your location to find events in or near your area. There is also a link to the V-Day website, that has a lot more info. The Homepage of V-Day has a link called V-Men It looks like it has stories told by individual men, and how you can organize workshops for men, as well. Thanks for asking, David!

Also, thanks to you who commented.

Thanks for the article, Judy. Somehow we need to educate EVERYONE as to why rape is a problem and how to prevent it. It still amazes me how many men do not understand how 'No" really means "No".

Ahhhh. San Francisco. Home of one of the very best University's of California, home to lots of outstanding food and of course, activist aspirations.

I liked San Francisco except the cost and the weather(it is freezing, I do mean freezing(28F), cold in October). Really shocking prices even to Southern California standards.

The people(very friendly and helpful), the food, the architecture, the arts, all fabulous. Strong China Town area where you can still get a 4 course meal for 6.00 dollars(at least when I was last there).
