The formula has not changed though: investment funds estimate that as population increases, more people will seek to eat, and the value of places to grow food will go up. Farmland investment company Agcapita's website touts land for sale: "Agcapita believes farmland is a safe investment, that supply is shrinking and that unprecedented demand for 'food, feed and fuel' will continue to move crop prices higher over the long-term. We believe Canadian farmland has some highly unique and useful characteristics if structured correctly, [it offers] minimal counter-party risk and in certain markets a margin of safety due to discounted prices." Scarcity begets a good speculative market -- too bad that scarcity in this case means hunger.

This is a sad state to be in. Let's make a positive change. Thank you.

Seems humans have a hard time appreciating things until it is gone.

Speculation is the root of conservative policy. It should be illegal. Tax the land instead of income.

Ain't that the truth Dandelion. All the more reason for mankind as a whole to stop our destructive ways and channel our knowledge and energies towards more constructive and sustainable practices. Thanks for the posting Judy.

There will never be enough food to feed the world if there continues to be rampant, out-of-control breeding. How hard is this to understand?

Have you ever noticed? We want something very much. When we get it we briefly enjoy it but soon it's taken for granted. We want something else. Yet we are never satisfied.

The true spirit within is not satisfied with possessions or money or power or sex or food.

We are driven on to become more than we are, perhaps more than we want to be.
