Ugh! I had just been in Turkey for 4 months prior to this scandal breaking there (but it was not on my radar due to the Taksim Square protests):

http://aysebereket.wordpress.com/2013/05/03/gm-rice-scandal-in-turkey-from-u-s-imports-reaches-international-proportions-part3-the-hidden-agenda/

The above link is the 3rd part of the series but the other two are worth reading as well.

I ended up eating a lot of rice while I was there as that's what my host made. He just could not comprehend there not being a starch for the meals and since I cannot eat gluten then bread, bulgar, pasta was out. So I ate to be polite. I gained weight even though I stayed vegan. I thought it was because of something else I heard about just after I left which is that now so-called "conventional" (non-GE/GMO) crops are getting sprayed with Round-Up/Glysophate to dry-down the stalks for easier scheduled harvesting meaning that the rice, beans, corn, etc., not only has this on the outside but has taken it up into the cells of what we are eating. This is not just in the US or the other countries growing large amounts of GMO like Brazil. This is all over the world. Germany has some of the highest body levels of Glysophate.

We have to fight this. It's urgent.

Wasn't this one of the reasons we were against GMOs?

Thanks Judy!

Terrible. It is very sad that our governments don't work for their people, but only for the big corporations.

Frightening...no doubt this is one way that these GMO conglomerates will win their war against healthy organic foods...just throw around their seeds to cross contaminate every organic field on the planet and soon we will have no truly organic rice or any other plant to eat in some 40 years. Nothing like GMO Seeds of Destruction.

We are such a dangerous country. Corporations are the greatest danger of all.

who else could get away with such widespread contamination of our environment. Can you imagine what would happen if Joe Citizen did this, instead of Monsanto.... he'd be in jail.

So does that contaminated rice get destroyed or repackaged or what?

S&N.We were warned this was going to happen, but it seems almost impossible to keep the GMO out. This can't be just by accident or a coincidence, this is carefully manipulated.

Spirit Spider,

From Part 1 of the link I included above it says:

~~
Greenpeace states that although Turkey became aware of the incident at the beginning of April 2013, import documentations show the rice was imported via several shipments dating back one year -April 2012 and June 2012- and that the majority is already on market shelves, and has been -and is still being- consumed for at least the past year.
~~

Seems it's not just food from China we should avoid, but from the US as well. :(
