GMO Labeling in Vermont

US Politics & Gov't  (tags: Vermont GMO Monsanto )

Ashley
- 188 days ago - burlingtonfreepress.com
GMO's will now be labeled in Vermont. Congrats to Vermont for being the first state (that I know of anyway), to do this! This battle took twenty years. But the war has just begun. Look out for the evil Monsanto Dragon! This is my first submission.

The GMO proponent in the article is WRONG, the nutritional value of GMOs is NOT the same. They are extremely deficient and negligent at best. Besides wreaking havoc on the environment with toxic Agent Orange, and your kids will never know what REAL foods taste like. All great reasons to ban this freakin' sh*t.

Re the threat that MONSANTO poses and it is indeed a real threat:

There is a real possibility for all American Citizens to bring an end to MONSANTO's power, or indeed any corporations power. There is a petition called movetoamend. Now, support for Amending the Constitution to Overturn Citizens United is already one third of the way there in Senate, Congress and State Legislatures. If Citizens United ruling is overturned, your voice will be heard again and true democracy will be restored.

Move-to-amend's slogan is 'We the People, Not We the Corporations'

So let your voice be heard : SIGN HERE

While I appreciate the idea of setting Monsanto back on it s heels and wasting its ill-gotten money on fighting court battles to block labeling, it really is a waste of time and energy.

If people just buy organic/GMO-free foods (already labeled) and/or know enough about where their food comes from (this option is best for everyone), there is no need for any legislation or labeling. It's like labeling a product "Contains Fat" instead of "Fat free." Just assume there are GMOs in a product if it isn't labeled otherwise or you don't know exactly where it came from.

FYI:SPECFIC CASES ESTABLISHING RIGHTS TO CORPORATIONS
*176 1st Amendment-Buckley v. Valeo - Money is equivalent to speech
*1996 1st Amendment -Right Not To Speak - International Dairy Foods Association, v. Amestoy.
No requirement to label products containingbovine growth hormone. Extended to statements of fact as well as statements of opinion.Prevents laws requiring GMO's to be labeled
* 2003-1st Amendment - Untruths In Advertising -Nike v.Kasky - Question of whether 1st Amendment gives a corporation the right to speak lies remains unsettled. These sources of corporate personhood are provided by "Timeline of Personhood Rights ad Powers " prepared by" Womens International League for Peace and Freedom" Having read this Vermont GMO labeling bill STILL PENDING As of which 5 States MUST pass their GMO Labeling Bills before the 5 states can willfully exercise their enactments.CT & ME have approved GMO labeling Law in their state and each Governor has signed them into law However there is a condition when any state within this Union attempts to amend/ in opposition to a Federal law. Let this be a lesson in United We Stand and Divided we fall. Speaking on behalf of Maine of wich I stand with the people and live We The People demonstrated in organized pettioning as well as in Police escorted Rallies as were demonstrated in many countres( World Monsanto Resistance March) in days that we witnessed the planets people actively United against the hidden allwances in our foods. We took it to the streets, blasted it by email ,blogs,& phones, petitoning to our Legislative bodies, spoke by witness testimony to the Capitals and participated within our Legislature bodies and committees with outside social organizations(scientists) that spoke with for and by We The People of Maine and we were powerful and our State Senate and House unanimously approved and enacted with the People a GMO Labeling Bill. Please get educated in what it takes when The People with their elected bodies with their states wish to challenge Federal rules/ laws within their governance STATE bodies you will learn the rules, work, and the fortitude that is expected in over ruling/Amending a Federal Body. I wish to correct this article that ME & CT "are waiting for 3 more states within the rules of Federal guidelines in the NE geography and population "which is a Federal Rule" that prevents our passed GMO Labeling Bills from becoming active by LAW.until these rules are met. Just like We The People of every state are forming political active groups in order to Amend Citizens United. Please be attentive to any American who volunteers to collect signatures by petition within your home states and you will be ever thankful & part of which Yes We The People Know We Can Be The Change We Want To See. Together our boundaries do not seperate the light we shine on the darkest things, Always know this and carry this within your minds, hearts, and actions that If God be for Us,who shall be against us.Please be involved with your state citizens initiatives and be part of the change Thank You. These 2 very hot contested topics need to stay in the LIGHT and with each citizens initiatives & State Governments actions in support to our Unified voices we shall celebrate in the victories we wish to win and know it has been worth all the tireless efforts it has taken to be.God Bless America and all people on behalf of righteous undertakings that unite for and with a lifeforce that is more powerful than any ill-gotten gain Amen

Ashley is right - labeling would likely have some impact. I thought I'd write again because I used to support it but have changed my mind.

I read a great point - who would labeling empower? The people? To the contrary - it would empower the regulating/enforcement agencies. Who are they? The USDA with Tom Vilsack (Monsanto bedfellow) at its helm, and the very government which supports GMOs through subsidies and judicial shenanigans. Can we trust them? No. Besides, it is far better if we can more simply empower ourselves - grow our own food and support local farmers such that Monsanto et al disappear or their bottom lines are severely effected because we are pursuing alternatives.

Also, organic labeling is voluntary, which is great since it doesn't bring force into the equation.

Vermonters are being very wise people. The Leadership has been well chosen by the people and those like the Independent Bernie Sanders has taken the time to explain well to the people various policies. Likewise the people speak up and the Leadership listens to The People.

Is all fine and well to say, buy organic, grow your own foods, but there are millions of people in this Country that live in cities that have no ground to grow their food upon. There are food deserts where people are not able to buy fresh vegetables no matter if they are organic or not. There are a lot of Elderly that can't grow their own foods or the disabled. All these people should have the right to know what they are placing inside of their bodies.

I agree with Ben, there shouldn't been GMO's at all therefore nothing would need to have labels. If Companies were truly ethical and followed a higher moral compass their foods wouldn't need to be labeled because the crap wouldn't be in the foods to begin with.

First article for posting Ashley.....good for you.

I am so grateful to Gordon Van Gies, my dear friend, for this forward. As a true Vermonter (displaced in Arizona), I know that Vermont will continue to lead this nation in progressive thinking and enabling citizens to educate themselves on vital issues. This is a wonderful example of Vermont in Action.

I would like to say that Vermont will also lead the nation in single payer healthcare. The Vermont program will be fully implemented in April 2015.

Vermont Senator. Bernie Sanders, will run for president, not to become president, but to give the Populist Party a voice. When the Populist Party exercises its voice, chrony capitalism will be crushed.

I am proud that Vermont will lead the nation in creating a caring, progressive, populist anti capitalist force that will crush chrony capitalism and save the United States from the current fascist agenda of the Tea Party.

Thank you again for the forward, dearest Gordy.

I would like to add Bernie Sanders made his announcement that the purpose of his presidential bid was to create a national voice for the Populist Party at a Town Hall Meeting in Brattleboro, Vermont, earlier today.

Is Bernie the Coolist or what?
