Could the Free Market Keep Homophobia in Check?

The sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, began imposing a penal code, that by 2015 will make gay sex and adultery punishable by stoning to death. Now Hollywood is fighting back by hitting him in the pocketbook.

thx, hm..there's always two sides to everything, while boycott IS an effective means, it could also hurt the wrong folks first, the hotel staff, that is a real concern as well. We'll see..

People must realize and made to understand that there are consequences to be paid for violating peoples' human rights or there damn sure should be. By people, I mean those playing on the international scene, be it sultans, kings, country leaders, corporate heads or otherwise. One of the best ways to handle situations such as this is to boycott. Of course, we don't do the same thing with our own corporations, such as WalMart and the Gap do we? Those companies are violating human rights all over the world, to include in the US and people continue to shop there and buy their crap. People must unite! If we don't, things will continue to worsen. The rich will never consider themselves rich enough.

True, there could be job losses, but unfortunately, sometimes that's just life. How much worse will it be if the situation is just ignored and no one does anything? More than likely, it will mean loss of life. When I look at it that way, loss of life vs loss of employment, loss of job seems more palatable or justifiable. Besides, I doubt this sultan or any other rich SOB in the same situation, is going to hold onto any business that's not financially lucrative. He'll either back down on the craziness in his own country or he'll sell the hotel or the "group" and move on. Someone will buy it, hopefully restore employees' jobs and life will go on.

I know it's easy for me to say; it's not my job or my life on the line, but I still say that if the 99% of us on the entire planet don't start standing up for ourselves and, more importantly, for each other, things will get worse, much worse. Stands must be taken; even small ones.

Don't let anyone bring there own laws an enforce them here. It's better to close that hotel an let the ppl find better jobs. I bet they are not treated well there, more like owned slaves, an they are trying to rule by a less than kind country so if they aren't careful they will be killed for breaking a law or sold. So protecting them is very important.

There is the so called free market and the fair market. There is nothing "freeing" in people being murdered by the dollars they collect, there is nothing "freeing" when workers are in unsafe factories toiling from sun up to sun down for peanuts, there is nothing "freeing" when children are working instead of getting a good education.

Free markets allow a few to do whatever the heck they want at great rewards for them and suffering for others.

We need "fair" markets. That is a big difference and I'm glad to see people at all levels start to understand that they support and protect these injustices when they buy or use what these others provide and support with the wealth they amass when you keep supporting their Companies.

It may be that people could loose jobs initially, but I'd like to think that the building might be sold to a more "just" employer who could then rehire them or keep them on. We are all suffering now under the injustices one way or another we will all have to roll with some of the punches in order to get things back on a more just place.

Susan A., I can not send you another star, so soon.
Dandelion, you take the words out of my mouth: the idea of a Free market is a myth, supported by the plutocracy.
The title of this posting, thank you, Ashley, reminded me of Carrie's posting on Ted Cruz' latest idiocy, about not doing business with gays. If economic pressure can send the Sultan, and Cruz, on a deserved cruise to political oblivion, I would applaud!

I support the boycott, and salute the celebrities and others who would normally use it choosing to take their business elsewhere. I don't know how much effect it will have on Brunei, but it does send a strong message.

For those employees who might be affected, perhaps there could be a charitable fund set up that we and the former patrons of the hotel could donate to that could be used to help them while they are finding other employment.
