Help Stop the Sadistic 'Fire Bull' Festival in Soria

Animals  (tags: abuse, AnimalCruelty, animals, cruelty, killing, sadness, animalcruelty, abused, rescued, protection, suffering )

- 3486 days ago -
On the second weekend in November, balls of pitch (a sticky black substance made from tar or turpentine) will once again be stuck onto the horns of a bull and set on fire. The burning bull is called "Toro de Fuego" (literally "bull on fire").

Here is an idea. Anyone who abuses or tortures an animal should be spayed and neutered. That way their evilness will never be passed along to any offspring when they reproduce themselves......

I remember signing a similar petition last year...some countries don't share our values about the rights of animals and are therefore placing themselves lower in the pecking order of ethical behaviour.

What person in their right mind could call this entertainment?
I suppose the same ones that can watch a mortally weakened bull bleed slowly to death at the hands of a skilled person who will prolong the agony for the sake of 'entertainment'. I dispair sometimes at this world where animals are skinned alive, clubbed to death and destroyed in so many ways that demean any nobility humans might claim to have.

I wonder sometimes who the real animals are in this world?

My email was returned -

Delivery expired (message too old) [Default] 452-'Message for would exceed mailbox quota'

I can't handle this - knowing that in a few days a living animal is going to set alight - where are all the celebrity animal activists in Europe, outcry in the newspapers, demonstrations to prevent this atrocity - there seems to be an awful silence on this.

What if we ALL -in all our cities and countries the world over - email our local papers - at least raise awareness of this awful thing, and make a noise.
The local paper in here in Adelaide has several times run "jokey' articles on the running of the bulls, etc - so I've just emailed about this atrocity - if we all do this, maybe we can make some sort of impression. My email,if it's any help -

"A terrible event will take place in a few day's time, in Medinaceli, a picturesque town in the province of Soria, Spain. A living animal will be set on fire,in a shameful "tradition" called "Toro Júbilo".

Balls of pitch (a sticky black substance made from tar or turpentine) will be stuck onto the horns of a bull and set on fire. The burning bull is called "Toro de Fuego" (literally "bull on fire").
The bull is then released onto the streets and can do nothing but run around in unimaginable agony with this burning substance searing its head, eyes and body, while drunken, bloodthirsty cretins cheer and taunt him. The bull often smashes into walls in a frantic attempt to douse the fire.

This cruelty transcends any notions of "tradition", "art",or "culture' - it is nothing more nor less than sadistic, hideous torture, and it is to the shame of us all as human beings if it continues.

"The Advertiser" has in previous editions published jokey articles on bullfighting, the running of the bulls, children training as bullfighters, etc - will you also run an article with graphic pictures on this abomination - I don't think too many of your readers would find it amusing."

I wish there were some way to make the celebrity activists aware - they are the ones who have the impact - anyone with any ideas, please - this is unbearable!

What if we ALL - in all our cities the world ove r

Noted again following your message this morning Pam. I signed the petition in June but it's still sitting here on Care2.

I can't understand why if there are 9 million members on Care2 that so few really do care for these important and urgent causes!

This is horrendous cruelty to the Bulls. Aren't there any caring police or people in that area that can help these Bulls that are about to be tortured and killed???

Hi everyone - just a thought: If everyone BUT everyone starts faxing/emailing/phoning this place (details below) to get contact through to Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas TO GET THEM ON THE BANDWAGON OF PROTEST asap, MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, we can stop this terrible thing from happening! This site is a 'paid membership' site. So, I've looked for their 'support' contact details - FLOOD THEM WITH PLEAS - to forward these pleas to these two Spanish world renowned actors. If we fail: I know this comment will probably be flagged as inappropiate, but let me get it in before it gets deleted.
If we cannot stop this terrible thing from happening: If there is even one member of ALF reading this, or one military man with a set of steel cajuns left standing in Europe: Will you please do the following:
Get a sniper to kill this animal as they set him alight. And if they try with another animal, kill it too. I can shoot very well, but I don't have money to get to Spain, and I have no idea how to get hold of a rifle once there. Okay, you guys can now delete my comment - but I've said it, and I'm prepared to put my money where my mouth is.

If anyone is tracking this story - I can't get my idea about contacting these two actors out to enough people. Can only send 25 introductions per day! So could you please, please forward my comment to your contacts? PLEASE, LETS GET MOVING. AND FOR THOSE IN THE USA, can you please call these people? It is too far for me to call, I'll go bankrupt at the costs of an international phone call, considering South Africa's phone company charges the highest rates in the world. Let us now see Care2 in action - after all that is why we are here, not so??

Eureka - I see NO reason for your comment to be deleted - you are advocating a quick, merciful release from a prolonged unspeakable horror - I had that very same thought!
Did you know that Penelope Cruz, and Antonio Banderas are well-known lovers of bull-fighting - does anyone know of any Spanish celebrities who are opposed to animal cruelty?
And,please - also contact your newspapers - they are all for the "matador has his pants ripped, running of the bulls,"funny" stories - get them on to this - make them aware we as readers do NOT find animal abuse "funny!" There is a box on the website of the newspaper to contact by email - the letter in my previous comment can be copied,it is mostly the details from the article - this would not be TOO time-consuming an exercise!

Lyn - about the petition - I contacted the author when I signed back in June, even though it had no target,as this is such an important topic.I contacted the author then, and again when it was posted here, and am sorry to say - no reply! So... I don't think we can put much hope in the petition for this time - but I reckon to keep on signing - as the petition seems to have been abandoned, someone may be able to take it over....

Pam, presently there is a question about just such abandoned petitions with missing Sponsors/Authors over at Care2 F&S. Might be a good time to join in there and put this issue before them for help

I also signed this petition on June 4th and to this date, there are only 688 signatures. I can't find the profile for the author: Su "Ghost Maniac" and the Target should be the King of Spain. If he would stop supporting Bullfighting and other related "Blood sports" these kind of cruelties would also come to an end. I feel that the King MUST be at least included in the TARGET.

Friends here's a copy of part of the reply to my letter from PETA regarding what we can do at this time! (Pam also suggested we all contact our local papers to spread the word)

Ashely passed on your e-mail to me. Thank you for taking the time to write to us and for your interest in helping animals! You are right to be concerned about this very important issue, the “Fire Bull” festival in Soria is shockingly sadistic. I understand just how angry, frustrated, overwhelmed, and depressed a person can feel on learning of the suffering and deaths of billions of animals at the hands of cruel humans and in exploitative industries. We have all experienced these feelings. We have also all come to know that becoming active for animals balances these negative feelings with positive ones like satisfaction and determination—the satisfaction of helping animals and the determination to do even more.

Your voice counts and there’s many ways to help!
*Please write the Ambassador of Spain in your country (see to find the embassy nearest you) and ask him or her to do everything in their power to intervene on behalf of animals in Spain.
*Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. When you write letters to the editors of newspapers, instead of writing to just one person, you reach thousands! And it's easier than you might think. You'll find tips on writing letters at
* Check out for tips on getting active for animals.

There is also a singer named Alaska, from a band called Fangoria, who is apparently very popular in Spain, and opposed to bullfighting - this is a translated site -

unfortunately,I can't find contact details,maybe someone more computer-competent than I am......
I've emailed interstate papers,as well as my local Advertiser, even if the letters are not published, at least it's bringing this horror to the attention of the editors - of course it would have so much more impact if more of us do it!

The ashamed Spaniard here...

Yes, this is ONLY ONE OF MANY acts of barbarism in my effing country using bulls in this same way (and worse). There was a demo yesterday in Soria, to which, unfortunately I was unable to go (although I have travelled further to go to demos of this kind, I cannot drive, so can´t always make the ones that are really far away, and it´s been bothering me the whole weekend).

There are some comments I´d like to make about comments here, but I can´t right now (have to go do something urgent) but I´ll come back as soon as I can.

Keep fighting this my friends! And all the other attrocities against our poor animal friends!

URGENT: Help Stop the Sadistic 'Fire Bull' Festival in Soria
In Medinaceli, a picturesque town in the province of Soria, Spain, a "tradition" called "Toro Júbilo" brings shame on Spain. On the second weekend in November, balls of pitch (a sticky black substance made from tar or turpentine) will once again be stuck onto the horns of a bull and set on fire. The burning bull is called "Toro de Fuego" (literally "bull on fire").

The bull is then released onto the streets and can do nothing but run around in pain. The bull often smashes into walls in an attempt to douse the fire. The agony the bull must suffer is unimaginable. These fiery balls can burn for hours, and they burn the bull's horns, body and eyes and cause tremendous stress – all while spectators cheer and run around the victim.

You have the power to stop this: Please, please prevent this terrible thing from happening! You have the power to put an end to this vile practice.

Regards from a horrified member of the human race.

One of the Spanish AR organisations that I´m a member of (Animanaturalis) summoned us to go to the demo against this horrific act. The demo took place yesterday. Here are some news pages that covered the demo (sorry, in Spanish but you can probably get the gist and see that people comment, on the whole, against these savage acts, and also for you to see that the media are taking more and more notice of these demos!):

Then, the following two links take you to:

- one of the photos from one of the demos I´ve been to against this kind of stuff: this one in particular is for the EXACT same thing as the horror posted here, ie, another "fiesta" where a bull gets his horns set on fire etc etc, but in Tarragona (north east of Spain) - I´m in this picture, though reluctant to tell you who I am!:

- a video of the same demo (it´s worth watching cause the demo was really well done, as it was a silent demo as far as people´s voices, but we were fronted by an excellent drumming group, who got EVERYONE´s attention - people going out on their balconies EVERYWHERE to see what the loud, rhythmical drumming noise was about!:

I´ll come back to continue, have to rush again!

Thank you very much to Marisa. I wish I was there with you to protest, anything but sitting here in South Africa so far away. God bless you for caring, for doing something. Arm chair activists should put their money where their mouths are. I'm far, far away from Spain, but my spirit is with everyone fighting this horror. And to my dear Care2 friends, we may be googling around to see who we can email/fax/phone, but at least we are doing something. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

And once again a request to any person with guts and belief. If we can't stop this horror: PLEASE PUT THIS ANIMAL OUT OF ITS MISERY!

Groan - up at 5.30 am - emails sent to Spanish MPs (great work,Eureka!) and Bardot foundation - WHAT WE REALLY NEED NOW IS EMAILS TO THE SPANISH MPs FROM AS MANY PARTS OF THE WORLD AS POSSIBLE!

With Bronwyn,Asli,Eureka,Veronica, and me - we have Australia,Germany,South Africa,Romania - how many others can we add?

Please, folks,Eureka has made it so simple - it only took me a few minutes,to copy the letter and email addresses and change the wording a little - although even this isn't necessary!

Want some coffee Pam, to help you wake up? :-) Thank you for going the extra mile!

Pam F (221)
Monday November 10, 2008, 12:49 pm
Aargh - it's Care2 needs the coffee - a comment I just posted disappeared - haven't had that happen for a while.
The comment (shortened now!) was to say thanks to Marisa, for posting the info - it gives us heart to see the good work those guys are doing.

And YES - boy,do I ever need that coffee - I can't believe I actually heaved out of bed and on to the computer before I had it - I hope my emails weren't utter gibberish!

Elm Morrison (357)
Monday November 10, 2008, 12:53 pm
Your emails were just fine. Care2 does have a habit of swallowing comments. Remember, if it is a long comment - copy it first before hitting the 'submit' button. Then if it does disappear into the ether, you can go at it again, by just copying it back and trying the 'submit' again. I've learnt this the hard way. My sympathies. Now enjoy your coffee and your day. A very big hug to you Pam!

Hi there Pam and Eureka and all other friends going the extra mile for this important and very urgent cause!

I'm on the coffee too since break of day!!! Have been emailing as many as I can to urge them to do the same here in Australia. I have probably worn out my welcome with some of them but too bad as the animals need our voice.

I'm going to now email Mr Noel Campbell our Australian Ambassador to Spain.

Elm Morrison (357)
Monday November 10, 2008, 1:35 pm
Hi Bronwyn, I'm still awake and on coffee too! Thank you very much for everything you are doing. I can't understand why it is only a handful of us actually working away at this. With 9 mil odd members at Care2, one would think this article would be humming as fingers hit the keyboards. Are Care2 members becoming apathetic? Do they think this is just another 'social' site - to have a good old picnic? Yes, we can have picnics, but we should first put shoulder to the wheel. I think of Marissa in Spain, running around like a lunatic, active - in the line of fire, and dear God, a handful of comments on this site, always by the same people. It is a disgrace!!! Where are the voices? Internet sites are indexed by Google and other search engines based on the amount of frequent updates to the site (among other factors). This thread stands still, google parks it! Anyone looking for something to get involved in will NOT see it, as it will end up on page 999999 of the Google/Search engine listing. AND THAT IS WHY COMMENTS ON THIS SITE IS SO VERY VITAL. JUST PEEKING HERE AND GETTING OUT TO THE PETITION IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. WRITE SOMETHING, ANYTHING, BUT KEEP THIS SITE UPDATED PEOPLE!! Surely this is not too much to ask? And mail your friends, your cat, your dog, your neighbour, your ex, your in-laws, in fact anyone who can add a voice. Either you care or you don't.

Elm Morrison (357)
Monday November 10, 2008, 1:38 pm
For newcomers to this thread - look a bit above, there is an example email plus a nice tidy list of email addresses. Copy these into your mail program, copy the text into the body of the email and send. We've done all the hard work for you. Just copy and paste and send, and use up a tiny bit of your allotted ISP bandwith. Come on everyone - you can do it. PLEASE!

Elm Morrison (357)
Monday November 10, 2008, 1:39 pm
This thread is not even making the 'most active today' in animal issues! I think I'm gonna puke at this apathy here at Care2.

Monday November 10, 2008, 2:43 pm
My last email to an Australian embassy person in Spain bounced back so I'm now faxing our Ambassador Noel Campbell in Spain.

I'm very disappointed too, Eureka, with the lack of attention this important and urgent cause is receiving! Come on friends and other Care2 members let's hear from you on this!

Elm Morrison (357)
Monday November 10, 2008, 2:56 pm
Bronwyn, I'm still awake, almost 1AM here in South Africa - and as each minute ticks away the dreadful thing that is about to happen is drawing closer. I swear if I was so inclined I would curse the bastards planning this event - and then happily join the line on the way to hell for putting a curse upon a human. But I am so angry now at a country and its peoples who basically still belong in the trees - no, a primate has more dignity than the dastardly sods in Spain (with the exclusion of all the souls in Spain fighting to stop this week's happening and it ever happening again). But if as Marissa's info says: 80%+ of Spain is against crap like this, why can the minority still get away with it? Sorry, here my logic fails me, maybe I'm too tired, too pissed off. Eeeshh, let me stop now before I start swearing.

Judith Jaehn (199)

Elm Morrison (357)
Monday November 10, 2008, 3:09 pm
Hullo dear Judith. Glad to hear you. Like a voice coming out of the wilderness. Yes it is a nightmare. Makes one feel like screaming - but at who? Thank you, thank you for the networking. My heart is with Marissa right now. God knows what is happening there, these brave people taking on a mob mentality. I need to give you a big, big hug my friend. We are all going frantic. You know the historical saying: 'Rome shall perish in the blood she has spilt.' Well, the people of Spain will go the same way. No country can survive having such a mentality - and it is not just Spain, it is happening in South America too. Uuugghhh, I don't think I can handle more of this today. I'm going to crawl into a hole somewhere - chanting.

Bronwyn H (228)
Monday November 10, 2008, 3:22 pm
Yes, good on you Judith and Eureka, Marissa, Pam, Asli, Veronica and all other friends working towards preventing this horrendous cruelty that is about to take place.

Even though apparently so many in Spain are against it, they obviously do not put their words into action!

I just had the time to get onto this and read the comments. I think the best thing for now is to bomb the above mentioned people with emails, And see if we can get the ownership of that abandoned petition transferred to someone else. In case that is not possible or in the unfortunate case this year's event isn't stopped in time, I would suggest setting up our own petition and asking care2 to sponsor it, and doing anything and everything possible to reach the target so to stop any future "event" like this. It is beyond cruel and horrible...there aren't just words to describe it. When you think the bottom has been hit - there is always someone to prove you wrong... :(

That is so inhumane!! I saw on a channel one time a bull getting stabbed and a bull chasing people down a narrow street and I thought that was so inhumane. I just can't understand why people would want to start an animal on fire!! It reminds me of the end, when the ten commandments were throwen at the people for going scares me to think that this world can have such people like that in it! These poor animals, what fear they must have! Knowing that it is humans doing this worries me, just to think they see this as an entertainment! Asli, thank you for letting me know this, I noted it and signed it, I know if more people can get together maybe we all can put a stop to this unforgetable crime!!!!

Lyn, I thought '60 minutes' should be contacted too, as they ran a story on the Spanish Matadors, on TV here in Melbourne last Sunday night. It showed how the Spanish people apparently just adore them, they're two brothers (their father was a famous Matador and was killed Bull fighting). They describe them as 'drop dead gorgeous' and the new rock stars of Spain!!!

Whatever publicity we can get is helpful, though I sadly think time is running out for stopping it this weekend; but we must persevere for the sake of the Bulls.

This is the most disturbing and most disgusting thing I have heard about what they do to bulls. I hate what they do with the lancers or spears to bulls but this takes the 'cake' or does it. What on earth are these Spaniards thinking? Certainly not with their heads or minds. Sadistic to the core. No wonder the bull in the 'shot' is reeling in agony. B...........sds! What else can I say? This isnt Sport this is insanity and barbarism at its ultimate but then again there are other countries that can also take the hat on the ultimate cruielty to animals. I hope World pressure on the Spanish Government acts. What an utter disgrace...unbelievable.

In case you find pictures of this small demo against this barbarity a tiny, tiny relief, click on "Fotos de la manifestación" below the line below the picture:

The question is "Do you think the way of celebrating Toro Júbilo should be changed?" And you have to click on the first answer "SI" for yes, then click on the blue button "Votar" at the end of the list of questions. Although people have voted Yes as a majority so far, more Yes answers are needed! I can´t believe about 17,603 people have voted no!!! though as the poll is being held by a Soria local newspaper, it´s not really surprising!

Get voting, VOTE "SI" AND SPREAD THE WORD!!! Any problems with the voting let me know!

This is a example of the letter written by Kinship Circle a few years back about this -

Honorable Officials:

I am appalled the Toro Jubilo (Bull of Fire) still takes place in Medinaceli, Spain. This is the 21st Century, yet it is acceptable for street mobs to harass a released bull with balls of burning pitch attached to his horns. The balls are ablaze for hours, scorching the bull's horns, body and eyes. Some bulls try to end their agony by smashing into walls.

I cannot tour or otherwise support any society that ignores the senseless brutalization of animals. I will advise others to join me in a boycott of Spanish tourism and commerce until the Toro Jubilo and other blood fiestas are permanently banned.

Please amend Spanish law to cover animals sacrificed for amusement or religion. I urge you to enforce stronger animal protection laws that shield animals from all forms abuse, including vulgar rituals and blood fiestas. Anyone who victimizes animals should be prosecuted and punished.

While different cultures may not understand each other's customs, all rational humans comprehend cruelty. Setting fire to a live animal is clearly sadistic. It is time for all regions of Spain to subscribe to the ethical doctrines that shape our civilized world. Heritage, entertainment, art and religion never justify outright torture.

Marena, definitely I'm with you on the campaign against the whale and Dolphin killing at Denmark. Crown Princess Mary is an Australian.

You're welcome to send me details on your campaign.

Thank you Bronwyn for contacting the TV etc. TY Eureka for the e-mail addresses, all done. Plus TY Veronica for Bridette B's e-mail. I e-mailed the Australian embassy. TY Pam for the message in the 1st place. Well done Simone. Hey guys PLEASE e-mail all these you can, if I can. You would stop someone burning a dog or cat. This is the same. Go for it.

Thanks,Simone - I sent the postcards - I also just sent an email to

I was horrified beyond belief to find that in Medinaceli in the province of Soria, Spain, a shameful "tradition" called "Toro Júbilo" continues to be practiced. This unspeakably cruel event transcends all notions of "art","culture" or "tradition" - it is nothing more nor less than sadistic brutality catering to the despicable bloodlust of a mindless mob.

I am in utter disbelief that a country which is part of the EU,and as such expected to conform to the required standards of animal welfare, can allow this atrocity, and just as disbelieving that there are not enough good, decent people in that area to speak out and stop this terrible thing.

I know there have been many, many protests, and thanks to the internet, people the world over who were previously unaware that such cruelty existed, are now appalled at what is to happen.

You have the power to stop this - please, please,in the name of decency and humanity, use the influence you possess to prevent this terrible thing from happening!

If this awful abomination takes place, the name of Medinaceli will be reviled and detested, this sickening torture of a defenceless animal has absolutely no place in a civilised society.

Yours sincerely,

Pamela F...

I'm not suggesting anyone copy that - others may wish to be more "respectful" - assuming that others will this stage and this time of night, that's as respectful as it gets, for me.

Bronwyn,Eureka,Lyn,Anne - you're magnificent - if I'm ever in a stoush - I want YOU GUYS on my side !

Yes, I know Bronwyn, she is a Tassie girl. We should be able to get her on our side. I lived, studied and worked in Australia for 12 years andn have PR there.

I also wrote to the Spanish PM and the others and was pleased that I did not get any FAILURE TO DELIVER notices from that Lot. I also wrote to the Royal Household Office of King Juan Carlos. So far so good.

This goes on every year. Here in Spain people are horrified about this too. They even had a television programme go to the town to offer alternatives to end this. The problem is that the townsfolk want this barbaric murder to continue and legally it won't be stopped as there is a lot of money in the South of Spain from (sorry not sure of the word in english) people that own bulls and bullfighting rings. I have written many times to the governement, who although they are against it in principle, will not do anything about it. It really is frustrating. In some parts of Spain, bullfighting and this kind of torture continues because it brings in a lot of money from tourists. So explain to all your friends that come to Spain. Don't let them spend money in the murder of innocent beings. Thank you all for your constant support in getting this abolished.

Hullo everyone. There is this petition to sign, for Catalonians only. If target is reached then bull fighting will be abolished in Catalonia. We need to let as many people in Spain know about this. If any of you have contacts in Spain, please let them go to this URL - copy into their browswer: it takes them to the Spanish site.

I received one reply - - not sure who that is - it's in Spanish, with no salutation or ending.
I google translated - but of course that doesn't make much more sense!
It just appears to be a list of rules, regs, and bylaws - all of which the gentle art of bullfighting and burning,is ,of course, fully in accordance with! But the gist was - IT AIN'T GONNA STOP!

You guys we need PETA and every other animal rights group to ban together and do a human shield at these f*cked up events. We can physically stop them and have the press there.
Who do we know in Spain? Let's put our heads together and organize. If we have a big enough presence the rest of the world will look on in horror. This only goes on because it's not widely known. Let's make a proposal. There is power in numbers. Let's have these groups cooperate in a consolidated front.--all of them and stop this once and for all.
As we link the groups we can also put pressure on the EU to put pressure on Spain, just like we've done with the Canadian Seal Hunt.

Do we have ALF in Spain? Can we get business addresses of the stockyards and places these bulls are kept? Business addresses, PICTURES of the people committing these crimes? Who are the people behind this? What do they own? There's more than 1 way to set a fire. ALF you there reading this? DIRECT ACTION! --GET THOSE ANIMALS OUT OF THEIR POSSESSION! Bankrupt them through boycotts.

Laurel, although I know exactly how you feel inside, the ALF here do not do damage to property or people. They are adamant on that, as it´s imperative that animal rights activists do not get a bad name here, as we´ve got it tough as it is. If we do, we´ve had it and we´ll never win. All the actions here are peaceful but have impact ( as an example). If you could only listen and read BOTH sides when the media are involved, the PRO-cruelty people in the media give all activists a really hard time here, and that´s with PEACEFUL actions, while at the same time, the ANTI-cruelty people in the media have amazingly good words, emphasising how the savages who are against us are so aggressive and violent towards peaceful demonstrators.

We all want to see these Neanderthals in the exact place they put the animals in, but we really gain so much more, here in Spain, with peaceful actions...

Big hugs Laurel, I do share your feelings.

Marisa Sebastian (130)

Sorry, I forgot to add that at one of the acts this year, where these amazing activists hung from the top of the La Monumental bullring in Barcelona with ropes, also holding a huge banner demanding abolition of bullfights, there was a thing (I mean a "man") who tried to cut the rope that one of the activists was hanging from, and it was filmed, so he was taken to court accused of attempted murder!! This is the kind of difference between activists and Neanderthals that we need to show here!

Marisa for the Bulls who do we have in Spain that are willing to do direct action? We need to do something because the bullfighters and their people BEAT up the press who tried to cover the bullfights and so on. Obviously we have failed in our aim because they are going to burn an amimal alive this weekend. If we want to stop this insantity we must approach it as if a child was being burned to death this weekend. What action is appropriate? A human shield, direct confrontation and shut them down. We are too tolerant, too tolerant. Where are our Spanish activists? This animal will be burned alive. I do not feel peaceful about it at all. I do believe in physical confrotation. If I were being burned alive I'd want someone to help me. I am too angry to write anything right now. Our human civilization is a disgrace and that this goes on sickens me to the core. We need to stop it by this weekend. I've got to go and find anyone in Spain who is willing to go out there. Wish I lived there so I could do it myself.

Many thanks Pam for letting me know about this horror,PETA petition signed and voted in the poll, both have been sent on. Also signed petition at thepetitonsite and sent letters to all the people noted above. The letter I sent to the Advertiser has been printed today, they have left some out but it will at least make people aware of this horrendous cruelty. Had a reply back from IFAW they said there are alot of organisations within Europe trying to ban this horrible act and gave me a site its ( ).I can get on the site but IFAW said you could get the page translated into Engish but I couldent do it, maybe others can, please take a look.Deep thanks to all the caring, committed people above for your wonderful efforts.Your words, letters, and the deeds of Marisa and the other courageous people with her in the thick of it have been truly inspirational,I am in awe of you all.I know we are all feeling unbelivably desperate at this time but PLEASE KEEP SENDING THE EMAILS to those listed above, we must keep the pressure on.

Gillian - great to see you here.I saw your letter in the Advertiser - well done.
Here is the translated page -

You can get translations of text or webpage at Google translate - just google it!

although often the translations are not much easier to read than the original.

It sure is looking grim - it's impossible to comprehend that an animal is going to be burned alive - impossible to comprehend that there's not all the animal orgs in the world, and especially in the EU - which does have laws against animal cruelty - joining forces against this. And why the whole country is not in outcry!

I agree with Marisa that the animal activists have to be the civilised ones as opposed to the aggressive, violent hostility of the pro-bullfighting rabble - horrendously difficult as this must be.

But I'm also with Laurel regarding the power of numbers - and when an ANIMAL IS TO BE BURNED ALIVE - my god - this is something so fiendish,so far removed from human comprehension that it can't be grasped - you can't stand aside and let it happen!

The power of numbers- if EVERY activist in EVERY group, and EVERY ordinary decent individual who didn't belong to a group, but hated this ,could come together in Medinaceli - for something as monstrous as this I'm sure they could do it - could the sheer weight of numbers be enough to stop it?

Of course,I'm wondering out loud here - I have no idea how many activists there are,how large the population of Medinaceli....and, god, what a vile hideous bunch of sub-human barbarians they must be!

Laurel, I want to jump and stop whatever I can stop. Everyone who opposes this evil act wants to jump and stop it, and save the poor bull. BUT, unbelieavably and unfortunately, it´s legal for them to torture the poor creature in this way. So you know what would happen? The police would intervene, would stop you, me, and all the others, the bull would be tortured as planned sooner or later, and we MIGHT have gained more unpopularity than ever, and nothing else. There might have been a riot, maybe, and then all the blame would have been on us, not on the Neanderthals. And all the pluses that have been gained so far would have been greatly reduced. We possibly would have been arrested and God knows what, and then there would be less of us going to demos, blah blah blah.

I might sound tolerant or apathetical, but I know what happens here. Although MANY are against, there´s still a lot of apathy, so yeah, demos are gradually growing in numbers but there´s still a lot of work to be done. We must use tactical fighting here... a war is not won without tactics, and many have to lose in the process, for the war to be finally won.

I also feel like going to farms and taking out all the tortured hens, pigs, dairy cows, rabbits, and all the other animals tortured and murdered daily everywhere in the world for meat, eggs and dairy... It´s just a sad, sad, sad world that needs a lot of work from every grain of sand that we are, but we cannot go against 95% of the world physically, we need other ways of doing these things. Sorry, I´m going on, but I don´t know how to express the fact that I feel like you, but also know that what´s going to happen to the bull will still happen, even if it were two days later. Cause it´s LEGAL. Disgusting.

If you want to get in touch with action activists (they´re peaceful activists), and are the best Spanish ones.

Marisa Sebastian (130)
Friday November 14, 2008, 6:49 am
For example, the proposal that´s going to happen in Catalonia any day now to collect enough signatures to LEGALLY ban bullfighting there, and as this would be legal, nobody could touch it, is the process of tactical actions from the grass-roots activists that target politicians. (

We all have to bear the evil that still goes on here, you can even catch a glimpse of a bullfight by accident if you´re channel-hopping, so there´s no escape - walking past the "plaza de torturas" (the Spanish name for bullring is "plaza de toros" - ie, bulls squares if you translate LITERALLY, but we systematically call them torture squares "plaza de torturas") - so, to go back to what I was saying, walking past the plaza de torturas is almost a daily thing, they´re in city centres, and some, in the case of my city for example, have a life-size sculpture of some murderer bullfighter in front of them. We have to live with this shit, and we have to suffer the deep shame (this is a really bad thing, believe me), and it´s very stressing and distressing... you feel like chucking a pot of red paint at these sculptures, and you want to stop and talk to the tourist-looking people who are queueing to buy tickets to try and convince them not to, and I have done it myself and got looks from them as if I´ve just come out of a mad house with a straitjacket still on, but we try and try. I´m getting stressed just writing this. But can you do this on a daily basis, at all hours of the day, to all the tourists? No. But we can do other stuff which will eventually, hopefully sooner rather than later, will abolish this crap for good.

Sorry. I really must stop. It´s just a subject that touches a raw nerve and sometimes...

Oh crap.

laurel w (207)

I understand your point and that animal is to be burned alive. Some things are worth being arrested for. This is one of those things. We have different points of view about it and your point of view is fine. I personally can't live with the Roman types of games occuring in human civilization.(You may see me hancuffed in attemtps to stop atrocities.) Someone once asked Henry David Thoreau, "Henry why are you in jail?" (for protesting taxes) and Henry asked, "Why are you out there?"--just another point of veiw. I have zero tolerance for an animal being burned alive and believe in direct confrontation. Defending the helpless is noble, not criminal. Our tactics will make no difference to that animal this weekend while it's cooking alive for 2 hours. We can't imagine the horror. I'll leave it at that. Today, tonight and over the weekend I'm finding anyone I can who can physically get out there to help. Sorry if it offends.
We need the media there and there are some news stations in Spain who will cover the story. I am putting together a list of names of press agents who can help. Wish I would have known about this sooner but it doesn't matter. I'm going to fight for it's life.

laurel w (207)

Once I have the list I will post it here and in ALF groups. I am having letters translated to Spanish and will post those as well. I am attempting to contact Ingrid Newkirk and she has a list of Spanish celebrities that may be able to apply pressure and create media exposure. I'm working all day so this will be posted later tonight. Marissa, we'll work together where we can and Asli I saw your message in ALF group. Let's get those contact #s and all do whatever we can. A human shield is what we could try. A human shield was used to stop a war. They can't take out a wall of people and if the press sees it they won't want bad press that may be internationa. The univerisities may have activists that can help. Anyone with connections to the college students there in Spain who are animal rights activists?

Laurel, I´m reading your comment a few times... just in case I´m not reading something right...

I´ve never said I mind getting arrested!!!!!!!!! If my getting arrested could save this poor bull, FUCK I´D GET ARRESTED A MILLION TIMES!!!!!!!!!! It´s NOT a different point of view as far as being arrested is concerned!! I´m simply saying you will not stop them from doing what they´re going to do to that animal! I´m SO glad you´re going to try! But as far as stopping them... GOD KNOWS I WISH!!! And saying "Sorry if it offends"...?????????? WHAAAAAAT????????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is that really the impression I´m giving, for fuck´s sake???

Look, I´m going cause my blood is boiling right now. I´d better come back when I´ve calmed down, I´ll re-read it all, and if I´ve missed a point I´ll eat my words, but I just can´t see the missed point right now. I´m fucking going. And I know my comment will be deleted by the powers that be here, for swearing, but man... a raw nerve has been touched.

As long as we gun for each other - an insult, a war of words, a misunderstanding, an intentional hurt, an unintentional hurt, we are so involved in protecting ourselves from 'abuse' or perceived 'abuse' that at the end of the day, no one wants to talk to anyone, mistrust abounds. Net result: We fight each other and no longer put all of our energies towards that which matters. In this case, the only thing that matters is working towards stopping this horror - and if we cannot achieve it immediately, by whatever means is personally appropriate for each of us, we can still work together as a a human chain, be it in physical, media, internet, virtual whatever means to prevent future events, the ultimate goal being a complete political ban on these horrors. Reagan broke the back of communist Russia on pure economics. For every cent spent by Russia on arms America upped the ante - outbidding until the Russian economy could no longer stand, and this in my humble opinion is the way to go with Spain and any other country that thrives on this kind of torture. BREAK THESE COUNTRIES ECONOMICALLY!!! This is long term, and will take incredible financial resources - and a political will that is not evident anywhere.

If we can find individuals with HUGE financial resources, and with a warrior spirit equal to that of the SPARTANS it can be done. It will need to be planned like a war, each battle a step closer to financial ruin for each country. Where there is a will there is a way. I'm just an accountant, not an economist, but by God, I am willing to get on board a project like this. If someone is willing to pay for my bread and butter, I will spend the rest of my life working towards the destruction of these economies. I will hit them where they feel it.

In the meantime, we do whatever it takes to fight each battle, each one of us in our own way, with whatever spiritual, physical and monetary resources we have. Let us not cause a blood bath between ourselves here. STAY ON THE SAME SIDE - WE ARE THE ONLY SIDE THAT WILL STAND AGAINST THE MONSTERS.

A divided nation falls. We must stand as one here - keep the peace between us, respect and sympathise. I've gone almost nuts with the emotional stress, knowing that by myself I cannot stop this.

TM - concentrated in an area, has been scientifically proven to reduce crime by 75% in the area where the TM yogis have concentrated - works to square root percentage of the given population - pure quantum mechanics. This is another way to tackle the problem. BUT WE HAVE TO DO IT AS A TEAM.

The bickering and defensiveness here must stop! We are all crying, we are all outraged, but gunning for one another is not the answer, and until we stand in someone else's shoes, we cannot speak for them, or talk down to them ever! When the issue here becomes who is doing the most, and who is doing the least, as perceived, then we've lost it.

A divided house is useless! So I ask everyone on this site - pull together, be supportive, offer a patient ear, a sympathetic ear, a respectful ear. Let us work in LOVE for one another, for the animals.

I hold all of you and all these creatures who need us, tightly within my heart. God bless to all of you.

I've come to say publicly that yesterday, after letting my fiery temper get the better of me and shouting at Laurel, not too long after I wrote to her privately to apologise, and told her I was in a hurry and had to go somewhere (I was 2 hours late for a friends' get-together for being on the internet doing what I could for animals - I sort of explained that the people around me are getting fed-up of never seeing me, and this was one example, and I was getting a phone call from them asking me where the hell I was etc, so I was very tense, anyway, I won't go on).

The end of my message to Laurel said "I´m feeling tired, so I´m apologising for "shouting" and going nuts. Just saw the words "Sorry if it offends" especially, and I felt as if... I don´t know, but I snapped. Sorry, I have to rush now, but when I get home tonight, I´ll log on and apologise in the news, publicly.

Hand shake? I´d prefer to be in good, or even excellent terms with an activist like you."

So just wanted to state this, and that I'm the last one who wants an internal war, and I'm guilty of having snapped like a silly little girl, so I'm apologising. I myself have a quote on my desk about anger, and I simply ignored it. PEACE to everyone, and to Laurel for doing so much. And thanks Eureka, you're absolutely right, and about TM, I know about this, and this has worked with one of my cats when I asked people to please send positive thoughts, and she got cured, according to my vet, "miraculously", so I do believe in that.

Sorry again.

Thanks, Pam, and Eureka--and everyone else--for the wealth of links & e-mail addresses. Looks like I've got some catching up to do! I thought I knew everything (ha!), but had never heard of the "fire bull" until I found this message on Care2. Thanks for raising public awareness of this indefensible cruelty.

I've seen a few bizarre things, but this was a jawdropper. Just when I think we can't possibly become any more ignorant, an entire town, more or less, decides to git theirselves likkered up and light a bull on fire! (Yee-haw!) The only fair way to conduct such a spectacle, however, would be to strap one of the drunken tormentors to the animal's back in a kerosene-soaked sombrero. That I might watch.

Vida is right. These barbaric death games are permitted for the same reason Tijuana tolerates "donkey shows," and Costa Rica turns a blind eye to the pedophile sex trade: tourist dollars. It's all about money, or rather the lack thereof. Poverty breeds far more social horrors than affluence.

Thanks for your collective passion and activism, it's very inspiring. As a card-carrying member of Amnesty International, I can attest that e-mails and letters really do work. I've seen it happen many times over the years. Pregnant, unmarried women spared from being stoned to death in Africa, for example, simply because people cared enough to write letters and e-mails.

It's hard to find levity in such a sad subject, however for the benefit of those who delight in seeing the bull win on occasion, I submit the following video in which a Spanish cowpoke named El Tigre has his "eggs scrambled," so-to-speak, by one very annoyed bull. There's no blood or gore, and the bull was not injured. Can't say the same for El Tigre, though he happily survived the rough treatment and is reportedly doing fine. In any case, it's pretty damned hilarious, especially if you love animals:

I sent emails in Spanish to all of them... Thank you for the contacts.

Even though we also have bullfighting here in Portugal (Spain's neighbour), we would never allow an animal to be burned alive. That doesn't make it all right to have bullfighting, but at least it exists in a smaller scale and it's not 'so violent' (I know this is an absurd statement). Nevertheless it must end once and for all! One problem is not so much the tradition but the subsidies the European Union gives to bullfighting! Yeah... I was also chocked to hear this! If they would cut all the subsidies, it would be so much easier to end bullfighting.

Anyway, the fight against this barbaric show continues!

I would also like to state that Rodeos (in the USA and Brazil) are barbaric shows as well and they should be stopped! We should do something about that!

Here's a list of emails people have left here on care2 for you to use if you want to send complaints about this to Spanish authorities and Spanish members of the European parliament:

Thank you all and keep up the great work!

But what on earth are these Spaniards thinking of. Just how more cruel can you get ? What a vile nation they are. The reason why I don't visit Spain. EU subsidies for bull fighting? Master of the Universe, is this in the name of "supporting cultural identity"? I am profoundly disturbed and enraged about this. So our tax money is, in fact, used to help pay for these cruel, barbaric "spectacles"?

I have signed the petitions, and I shall now flood all the Spanish Euro MPs with e-mail protests against the "Toro Fuego" AND the bull fighting. A little later, I shall send snail mail letters to the Spanish tourist department (or whatever it calls itself), informing them that I have vowed to NEVER set foot in Spain, or knowingly buy Spanish merchandise or foodstuffs or drink unless and until they STOP the vile, barbaric, immoral torture and abuse of bulls.

There is NO excuse for this evil, demented behaviour, none. TRADITION - dear Lord, countless living, sentient creatures have suffered in the name of T R A D I T I O N ! ! !

Why not bring back the auto da fe'? Surely this would be a much more amusing spectacle, hmmm . . ? We could then stand around cheering as heretics are burned alive! Hey, all you guys, wouldn't that be FUN! And then the rest of them, all the "virtuous" spectators, could feel really superior! We might as well argue that "Jew baiting" and "nigger lynching" are TRADITIONS in certain parts of the world! This is NOT an acceptable argument or an excuse!

I am sorry about that bit - I am so saddened, so horrified and so disgusted that I am reeling (mentally) from the shock of processing all this information. I really had NO IDEA about this vile crime until I read it here.
