Petersburg, VA—After allegations of animal mistreatment, poor living conditions and a lack of cooperation with animal rescue groups, a Petersburg councilman called for a full investigation of the Petersburg Animal Shelter. The investigation has finished, but volunteers say changes are still needed at the shelter.

Animal advocate and shelter volunteer Jill Narvay feels the animals at the shelter need more exposure to possible owners.

Sarvay and other volunteers held a silent protest at the shelter February 5. They said they want to see simple changes made, like pictures of all the animals in the shelter uploaded to major online pet adoptions sites, instead of only on the shelter's Facebook page.

Volunteers claimed the city of Petersburg doesn't work well with adoption groups to put animals into permanent homes. They also claimed that it is difficult for people to volunteer.

At the silent protest, Councilman W. Howard Myers announced that a task force had been formed to fix the root of any problem at the shelter.

so sad how does this go so unnoticed and not dealt with it takes the death of many to bring it into the lime light to take action and AI ask why why do animals have to die for it all to turn around we surely can find sanction for all animals if we place it as a high priority Now that we see how some shelters are and can be no care irresponsible we have the proof that we need to step up the monitoring and the conditions of shelters for the animals who depend on us for their welfare and protection

The thing that bothers me is those perfectly heathy dogs/puppies that were euthanized! I'm trying to be positive but I can't help it...my heart breaks for those sweet, furbabies who've gone over to Rainbow Bridge.

Pet adoption with photos on Facebook can really help, and with a spay and neuter policy for each pet adoption the future will be brighter for the community. Let's hope the changes come very soon. Thanks Phyllis for posting.

Thanks for the post, Phyllis. Animal welfare and control shelters need a strong spay/neuter policy. Some politicians will think this is "fluff" and avoid the issue, others will (somewhat logically) state that the spay/neuter provisions must be incorporated in the animal control ordinance. Either way, it is the politicians' jobs to make sure animal control ordinances are in the 21st Century.

Putting the animals' bios and pix on Facebook and similar sites is a 21st Century development (roughly). Politicians and appointees are being paid by taxpayers (including these volunteers). Go get em!!!

I certainly hope that Mr Myers will follow through on his task force with this..
Very sad..and so unavoidable..
I guess this is a big reason why I will not blindly support places that I have no way of knowing what they are truly like..

Here locally I know our shelter goes above and beyond to help any animal..

Thanks Phyllis..
Sadly noted..

What is wrong with these people? These shelter people must hate animals then if they are not doing anything they can to get these dogs adopted. I understand how hard it is to run a shelter, I was a volunteer doing rescue at one time. but help is available as I saw comments from people willing to volunteer there. So, what is their problem?

I don't see how people can be so cruel. If you don't like animals & don't want to help them, then you shouldn't be working in an animal shelter!!

This just proves that you need strong, caring leadership in any organization for it to run well. That is why we end up needing laws and regulations.... to protect the weak and innocent from uncaring, indifferent and, sometimes, downright vicious people.

Thanks Phyllis for posting! Those working or volunteering in animal shelters must love animals so that no mistreatment goes on. I will forward to other.

Thanks Phyllis. Beyond sad and without photos it limits chances of an animal being adopted and then when they are not in many cases, they are euthanized .I hope this investigation continues

We are all in agreement that killing innocent puppies and dogs, 'fur babies' as we lovingly refer to them is horrendous. Personally I do want to see US go after them! So if anyone drafts a petition(s) at any time, as always I will sign everyone and or/email letters.
Posting to Twitter to expose !!!!!!!!!

I forgot to mention after re=reading this article the we hope the following statement/action is true and will be actively followed up on. Anyone who can go to this shelter just to see if in fact there have been substantial improvements certainly would get my vote!

" At the silent protest, Councilman W. Howard Myers announced that a task force had been formed to fix the root of any problem at the shelter"

Thank you Phyllis :-)

Noted. Thanks Phyllis. Each shelter seems to operate independently and there are good ones and bad ones. The good ones link up with as many rescue organizations as possible and try to limit euthanasia as much as they can. This is very sad.
