For some in the Richmond city lockup, a 15-minute interview can mean the difference between hours there or weeks in jail

The chances that someone arrested for a minor, nonviolent offense can avoid a month or two of jail while awaiting trial are lower in Richmond than in most of the rest of the state, a Richmond Times-Dispatch review of state statistics shows.

Noted and thanks for the story Phyllis and the posting Michael. The justice system seems to be very unfair for the poor.

Noted with thanks,Phyllis. This takes me back to when my son was arrested. There was no bond. For his own protection he was put in lockdown not being able to see others. He has never been violent and never will.He was still in jail 15 months later when gave up and decided to sign a plea agreement! He knew his public defender was useless and could not get another! We could not afford an attorney. Now he sits in prison. In this country you are guilty until proven innocent! I even argued the point with a staff person at the jail. They said they are here they are guilty!

How sad. People's lives can be ruined before even having a trial!

(Why don't these situations get more attention?)

Grrrrrrrrrrrr . . . Don't even get me started!

Thanks, Phyllis.

The problem is overcrowding, Policemen overworked, Understaffed law Departments, cities and State making to much on Prisoners to bring in money from bail, tickets, lawyers, court fees, And Government pics up most the tav for the prisoners who do not have the means to pay fines set, So then prisoners put in Prisons where more money is spent on the same prisoner case, An the stete and government Now does not even cover for all the things to take care the money to feed, clothe, personal care items, medical, etc, They want the families to cover it ! Family did not get the prisoners in the situation they are in, THe prisoner did !

Until the State and Government wants to stop making money off those they are ticketing, and arresting ! Then this routine will keep going around in circles ! Because PEople that are criminal types, Usually want a free ride anyway ! So the Pokee is a Place to stay for free, feeds them, Clothes them, PAys for medical if bad sick. SO manY cons wind up back in jail again, Cause another free ride...

THe only way the cycle can be broken is a NEW line of defense ! NO longer give free rides.>MAke them work for it ! More on the job training..Earn your way while in the pokee! Do not make the families pay there way ! Make them Pay the way while they are locked up ! Once they learn NO more free rides ! They will not want back in the Pokee ! And they will stop doing the things to get arrested !

Alo the state and government needs to put money into the department, in hiring more People per department to run them, Instead of being understaffed. An New laws stating that departments cannot get the kickbacks for the arrests ! Everyone Knows that around the hOidays especiallY the LAw wants to make their Quota on tickets... I think arrests are the same way ! The cells are empty BOYS.Go get some clients and fill them up ! MAke our pay checks and fill up our funds ! Don' t ya thinK ???
