This is a funny clip. Sort of. Stephen Colbert is entertaining. But this story is deadly serious. Watch the right part of the screen as it changes. These morons are serious about this atrocity. If God is your thing, then God help us. If not, just stop.

Stephen Colbert may be the only person on the planet able to make what is now and forever a horrific event funny. When I first read about this "Ben Carter" seemed like a real person, but watching him speak on this clip, I see that he is just another abominable example of homo sapiens. The most deadly, uncaring species ever to walk this beautiful blue oasis in space. If there is a God, She must be very shamed by us.

I completely agree that "Ben Carter" is an abominable example of home sapiens. Now that I no longer have television I do appreciate Colbert being Colbert and as usual he handled this horrible event with his special twist.

Thank you, Gene.

Colbert did indeed display the horns of their dilemma (third definition)

[dih-lem-uh] Show IPA
a situation requiring a choice between equally undesirable alternatives.
any difficult or perplexing situation or problem.
Logic. a form of syllogism in which the major premise is formed of two or more hypothetical propositions and the minor premise is a disjunctive proposition, as “If A, then B; if C then D. Either A or C. Therefore, either B or D.”

I'm telling you, the wealthy speak a completely different language. Now, they've manufactured an excuse for their elitist members to visit Namibia, have the "sport" of killing an endangered animal . . . and be able to call themselves philanthropic (and probably write the expenses off on their taxes).

And the ones this would appeal to are probably slapping Ben Carter (Dallas Safari Club) on the back, extolling his extraordinary genius in concocting this deception and high-fiving each other while coordinating their trips.

This is nauseating.

Thanks, Gene.

I, unfortunately, did see most of the clip, and in true Colbert fashion, he was able to put a glimmer of humor on a very dismal situation by employing the use of HEAVY SARCASM aimed at the Dallas Safari Club (DSC) and all of its waste of space members and supporters. There is absolutely nothing funny about being on the brink of losing any animals species, but by his use of humorous disdain for the ungodly plan of the DSC, (Disgusting Sacks of Crap) he was able to bring far more attention to the absolute lunacy of killing an extremely endangered black rhino in the name of conservation. Thank you Gene for bringing even more focus to the undoing of mankind. Thank you Judi for the forward.

I am sorry so many of you cannot see the clip, I'm not sure how I messed that up, but I hope you will google it, it is on youtube, rather than shoot me. Though, given a choice, there is only one of me, so I should be a real trophy, as compared to the black rhino. You will just have to look harder to find me, that's the fun though isn't it? The hunt? You can have what I have (warning - that may not be much) free and forgiven. Print this out as proof. And thank you. :^) gene

How Do You Save Endangered Rhinos? Kill Them and Display Their Horns

For the first time in 33 years, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has granted a permit to an American hunter to import a black rhino trophy from Africa.
The move certainly set a precedent for importing endangered species trophies – it’s the first time any endangered species trophy has been allowed into the states – and has stirred up controversy about whether or not killing an endangered species can help save them.

Black rhinos are protected under the Endangered Species Act and listed as critically endangered under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which governs their hunting and bans trade unless there are “exceptional circumstances.”

Since 1970, the population has declined more than 90 percent while the demand for rhino horns has led to skyrocketing black market prices and a recent surge in poaching. The number of rhinos killed jumped from 13 in 2007 to 668 in 2012 alone. As of this month, 203 rhinos have already been killed in South Africa this year, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

With fewer than 5,000 black rhinos in the wild and the resurgence in poaching it seems obvious to some that no one should be killing them at all, but trophy hunters will clearly not be deterred. Namibia
and South Africa were each granted trophy hunting quotas for five black rhinos per year under CITES this year.

Dan Ashe, director of the USFWS should be fired for proposing that the wolves be taken off the ESA list. Dan Ashe is not a friend of wild animals as witnessed the the recent Rhino case who ok'ed the hunting, killing and importing an endangered Black Rhino specie for These people, David K. Reinke, CEO of Liberty Parts Team, John J. Jackson, III, of Conservation Force.

Read more at this link:

One of the dumbest arguments, excuses I've heard in years. These people, David K. Reinke, CEO of Liberty Parts Team, John J. Jackson, III, of Conservation Force, Dan Ashe, director of the USFWS, who ok'ed the hunting, killing and importing an endangered Black Rhino specie, they all should have their brains, entrails ripped out, burned and placed in the outhouse crapper to rot forever.

Ty, Gene.

For those that cannot see the video, I watched it at Colbert Report - Black Rhino

Very funny clip on a very serious topic, conservation of black rhinos. Personally, I think the vest at the end was made from the carcass of Ben Carter, DSC.

I first heard about the plight of the black rhino when the TV show, McGyver, had an episode about the poaching of rhinos.

Noted, tweeted, shared, watched video, tweeted and shared it. There is obviously something lacking with these people if they can't understand the irony of selling chances to kill an endangered black rhino in a supposed attempt to stop the rhino traffic. There is a definite disconnect that they don't realize they are endorsing the hunting of there rare creatures by selling chances. I hate to say this, but I truly doubt their intelligence, values, or conscience.

Thank you Zee for finding, or creating that petition! Signed and noted, not nicely, sorry. Stephan did a marvelously funny take on an incredibly stupid, and therefore completely human (or some of us humans) excuse to behave as if WE were not sentient beings. We are ALL alive, one species, that we know of, is sentient. That is NOT a gift, it is a responsibility. For the most part? We fail miserably. What happens when the whales stop sing?

DaleLovesOttawa O (198)

I couldn't see it either after the video came out with a “Sorry, but this video is unavailable from your location probably due to your overly polite attitudes" I had not read the comments but went to look for the video elsewhere and found it via the Comedy Network, but I could have saved myself some time had I simply read the comments. The same goes when Care2 has The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, we are told the the clip is unavailable due to our "free health care."

It's even more bizarre that we can't see short clips because any Canadian can watch both shows in its entirety on our own TV networks on the same day and time that the full episode airs in the U.S. and we see exactly the same episode.

While I'm not a fan of Stephen Colbert's right wing views, he did a good job of putting down the Dallas Safari Club. Why anyone would want to go after an endangered species is beyond me. Trophy hunting is pointless and even more so when the animal is terribly endangered.

It is certainly rather shocking about what Jim Phillips had mentioned concerning the issue of just how in the world the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service allowed such a permit for a hunter to import a black rhino
trophy into the States.

It's one of the detriments of living under a monarchy. But in case you can't give up your vegemite and move to America, watch clips from The Colbert Report, etc..." I don't find that funny at all. Thank you, Gene, for posting this. Wish it wasn't true.

I find it utterly obscene. Those aren't men, they are monsters, and I'm sure that everything about them is small, particularly their brains. Reminds me of the King of Spain, who was at the time Honorary President of Spain's WWF.
He thought it would be a lot of fun to go hunting in Africa, and proudly posed for a photo with an elephant he had shot. He was kicked out of his honorary position after that, and is much hated in Spain now.

I'm ashamed of my country and of Namibia for allowing this to happen. Karma will get all those involved, but it won't save the rhinos.

Thank you Gene, I also cannot see the video at the link, but after reading all the comments i dont think i need to now! no doubt it would upset me ... I cant see the point of anialating the very animal that we are trying to save...that is being hacked to death as we speak. Maybe some of the money will trickle down to somewhere or the other...but this is big money and big egos...the big ego gets the dead Rhino to nail on his wall (and his horn no doubt will be sold on the black market before he is dead), and Namibia gets a ton of money to share out...can they be trusted either? to put the money into helping save the ill fated Rhino.

So it is okay for rich a**hole hunters to kill a rhino? At least the rich a**holes in Asia don't want to kill the rhino, they just want the horn. Why don't we just sedate all the rhinos in the world and safely cut off the horns- sell them all. In a year or two, the horns grow back, start it all over again- the poachers won't even have a chance....

Thank you Gene for posting and for Stephen Colbert for bringing this subject up. Sometimes this type of in your face humor awakens people.

If they truly cared about animals why don't they allow them ALL to live and just do the correct thing and donate the money.

Like awards given to Monsanto and the Peace Prize, these acts are meaningless. Philanthropy is another way the rich are abusing too, this is one of the ways.

Another way was an article on C2 was placed explaining how their philanthropy was really a way to keep money in their hands by the tax breaks and such and that they even made money from this. Then they get to look how wonderful am I. Although in this case, only they are fooling themselves at how wonderful they look.

Is why the Colbert report had the word philanthropy mis-spelled to philantrophy for all these are is trophies to them. The award to Monsanto isn't giving us good food, the Peace Prize hasn't given us Peace and the drones keep flying on, so this insanity isn't saving rhino's either. As Carole said, the wealthy do think differently.

I happen to think Colbert's piece was nothing short of brilliant. He very humorously showed in absolute absurdity of the DSC's plan - even playing the actual tape of Ben Carter so we could hear it straight from his mouth. It's my impression that unless you are a true animal welfare activist such as we here on Care2, you may not have heard anything about it. So Colbert was bringing it to the attention of millions of viewers, as well as shaming the organization behind this inane plot. I give him kudos.

I agree with what Sheila said.

Stop and think before reacting to headlines. Has everyone become so bitter they no longer have a sense of sarcastic humor?

I thought it was done in the style of Jon Stewart (where Colbert came from) and was pointing out the callous and plain stupid idea of killing the black rhino.

Folks, it was done in jest. Get a grip.

Thank you. Humans can be so utterly unbelievable in their lack of empathy. Always nice when Colbert or Stewart are able to bring a bit of levity to something that would otherwise make you want to cry.

We all just have to keep on doing our best all the moments of our lives...we face so much that we can feel overwhelmed ......yet remember each kind act ripples forth and touches many...... The depth of sadness that this video evokes in the heart is there so we will stand up for LIFE, wherever and whenever it is being abused........ Thank you Gene.

Noted. Thanks for posting, Gene. I saw this when it aired and was horrified that this is being allowed. Glad Colbert aired this info....with his usual humor, of course!

As usual, Stephen Colbert's sarcasm is right on target. Few people can fault him because his words are so patently "true". I feel for those who fail to recognize it as heavy-handed sarcasm. Do they really think anyone [except the Dallas Safari Club and its members] believe this crap? I would be ashamed to admit that I fell for it.

People who murder another living being for fun or for sport are pure psychos. They should be the ones need to first shoot and get rid of.

Apparently there are still dimwits who will argue that you have to kill the animals to save them. What they mean is that when they're extinct we'll ALL be speaking sadly and reminiscently ot the wonderful animals that used to walk this earth before the pea-brained humans decided to SAVE them.
