A mining company out of Canada has expressed its desire to perform test drilling for mining purposes within an area less than ten miles from Mt. Saint Helens. What went unstated by this proposal is that the company has already been caught, and stopped

Seems like one penalty should be no approval since they already disregarded the law and can't be trusted to honor any commitments in any proposal they submit(ted).

Yet another dumb company planning a dumb decision. From all the different articles I keep coming across lately about Canada they seem to have lost the plot, kill and/or destroy seems to be a big policy for them.

I liked the comment from Sue H.. That's what I thought too. Why would you mess with a dangerous aspect of nature? We can't say that all of our drilling and mining doesn't affect earthquakes, eruptions and such. Each time a volcano goes off it disturbs our climate as well as endangering those nearby. Add to that the environmental toxins from mining and it's a pretty destructive scenario. The fact that these people trespass and violate the law already proves that they are not worthy of any form of contract with the citizens, which is what it would be as the Forest Service owns the surface land. I don't like mining, but if the government is going to allow it, at least deny the contract to these people.

Are they totaly NUTS I totaly agree with both Sue and Lydia to mess around with a live volcano is not very bright idea and I personally think that The Forest Service needs to get their heads out of their arses and take better care of the area in and around Mt St Helen's and keep idiot like this away from this area. AS ANYONE WHO REMEMBERS WHEN MT.ST HELEN'S BLEW HER TOP AND MANY MANY PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO SHOULD BE DOING ANY KIND OF WORK IN OR AROUND THIS VOLCANO ARE TRAINED VOLCANOLAGIST AND ALL OTHER'S NEED TO STAY AWAY AND HAVE A LOT OF RESPECT FOR THE POWER OF MOTHER NATURE AND THE DESTRUCTION SHE CAN Wrought.

This is my backyard, and it is one of the most pristine areas you can find in the US, as the Mountain wiped out all traces of man with her displeasure in May 1980.

The trees are growing back, the animals and the fauna are recovering..but Mt. St. Helens is ever vigilant, and no one should ever be allowed to provoke her ever again!

Here's a link about the efforts of the environmental group the Gifford Pinchot [National Forest] Task Force to stop this drilling, which Ascot Resources says is for copper, although gold has been found in the area as well.

This issue hits close to home for me too, since I live about 60 miles away. Gladly signed, shared and noted. Thanks, Jim.

My first thought was not complimentary: "Are they out of their tiny little minds?" I realise that they think that a few miles from an ACTIVE VOLCANO - and a very violent one too, can't do any harm - but they patently are unaware of the number of times people have said in human history 'Oh, it'll be fine.....!' and it blew up in their faces! Geologists/vulcanologists felt that an observation station several miles from the volcano was safe - most sadly they proved wrong. They no doubt assume that the magma feeding the volcano comes up in one narrow pipe - but they can't be sure, and the consequences of being wrong are so terrible!

Then there's the point that this company has proved that they are not in any way to be trusted - they have already drilled outside their area - that is hardly a tiny error such as forgetting to tick a box - that is deliberate.

If they can't be trusted in small things - there is no chance whatsoever they can be trusted in large ones. Signed - thanks Jill.
