CHANGES need to be made at this facility! Too many innocent animals are living in unsanitary conditions, being put to death for NO reason, acquiring infectious diseases while at the shelter, being subjected to unnecessary & botched surgeries, much more!

Troubled Miami-Dade Animal Shelter Kills Dozens of Cats. More Die. Adoption Needed.

Seventy-two cats have been killed and 14 have died after an outbreak of disease at the Miami-Dade Animal Shelter. About 40 more healthy felines have been been moved r due to the disease, which is called panleukopenia.

A group called Undercats 4 Life is attempting to find homes for some of the cats.

The blow comes just as Miami-Dade Animal sevices was starting to recover from a scandal in which its director, Sara Pizano, resigned.
Pizano left after several documented cases of neglect and abuse at the underfunded facility in Medley. Animal groups had pushed for more compassionate treatment of animals there.

It is unclear whether neglect led to the situation in the shelter, The disease that many of cats contracted is highly infectious and often spread when animals come near others' feces and urine,.

When the county closed the old animal services facility last March, officials promised to imrprove care and clean up the facility. It doesn't seem like they kept their word.

18 dogs euthanized after distemper outbreak in Miami-Dade animal shelter

Miami-Dade’s animal shelter put adoptions and drop-offs of dogs on hold Saturday after discovering a virus outbreak in the pound that left workers with no choice but to euthanize 18 dogs.

Only dogs are affected. People can continue to drop off and adopt cats.

It’s the first outbreak in 10 months, said the shelter’s Kathleen Labrada, who added that the pound’s remaining so-far healthy 211 dogs would be monitored over the next two weeks for potential exposure to the virus, distemper.

She added that the county was left with no choice but to put down 18 dogs — from puppies to adults.

“There is no cure for distemper,” she said of the airborne virus that attacks a dog’s nervous system. “The dogs end up having seizures; it’s terrible.”

Animal services workers were patrolling the floors looking for more dogs with symptoms of the virus. At the same time, they were sending samples to the labs to identify dogs with a high enough antibody level, or sufficient immunity to the disease, to be made eligible for adoption sometime next week.

“During this time, they will be closely monitored for symptoms of disease and will receive prophylactic antibiotic treatment for secondary bacterial infections,” a shelter statement said.

Meantime, it said, most dog related services were being suspended, including the rabies and microchip clinic and spay and neuter surgeries.

Services to cats continued unaffected, and dog owners can continue to pay citations and purchase licenses for vaccinated dogs during regular work hours.

Miami-Dade County’s Animal Services takes in more than 36,000 pets each year with the goal of reuniting lost pets with their owners and finding homes for as many animals as possible.

Conditions for inmates in U.S. prisons and jails aren't any better, but no one is demanding more humane conditions for them. After all, even humans are animals, too. Don't all human beings at least deserve "animal rights?"

Signed and Noted - Thanks so much Jim. Why is shelter still open? WE need to be a voice for or animals and make sure this death shelter is shut down and the people that run the place need to live in these conditions. I bet changes would be made then. There is always another way to help our animals.

One can only hope that things will improve.

Its very sad what these animals are going through, I have been to Miami and its NOT a good place for animals because the people who live there the majority don't like animals, they throw them out on the streets, they try to get rid of them in any kind of way!!

Brian M. there are threads concerning those in prison on C2. I suggest if that is one of your major concerns that you post news about this abuse to the humans as well as C2 allows any one of us, including you, to post a petition so that you can gain signatures.

This is a thread for animals and because it was, not a thread that compared animals to people, therefore no one had to mention the humans, although many of us care greatly about many injustices that are done in this world, human and otherwise.

Shelters with horrific conditions are usually run by people who don't seem to care much about animals. The first step when these inhumane shelters make the news because of deplorable conditions should be to fired those in charge and hire people who actually care about animals. Caring shelters do a remarkable job of finding homes for their charges and have a very low euthanasia rate.

Unfortunately, most shelters are deplorable. We are normally talking about state or city funded concentration camps. Georgia, Florida, the whole USA is covered with these deplorable places, yet those that are done with true love and care for animals are always under scrutiny and given problems, Puffypaws for example. It is a shame that animals are too under the control of politics, good ol' boys jobs and such. On the other hand, we have the heartless majority of people who either abandon or bring in these animals for the simple reason that they shouldn't have them to begin with, they move and don't regard them as family, or stupid ones who finally get a boyfriend who doesn't like pets, etc. Where else can these poor creatures go? It is a vicious cycle that feeds these concentration camps workers who don't care, and kills the spirits of those who do care.

this 'shelter' is hardly a refuge for the animals. if this is the way the people in charge of this facility are treating their animals, i have little hope that things will change. these poor babies must be relocated to a facility that is interested in the welfare of these creatures. a shelter is a refuge for the homeless,. not a living hell. thank you, jim.

Thank you Jim- Signed & posted. It is absolutely inhumane for an organization whose mission it is to take care of these animals, treat them humanely, provide medical help until such time as they are found a forever home, to itself be the abusers and offenders. Hopefully, the citizens in that area will be outraged by this & do something for these animals.

I agree with Cher. Where do our signatures go? Does anyone else besides me send messages to petition authors respectfully reminding them that Care2 does not forward their signatures....that they have to close, download and send by email or by post themselves!? It's a false sense of security when you put your signature/voice in the hands of so many who have no intention of forwarding to the target, for whatever reason.

BTW, what is the real issue with this shelter? If it's lack of funding, it should either be bailed out by grants or shut down. If it's corruption and the scandal of cruelty and neglect, employees should be fined and fired, and the facility should either be cleaned up and managed by responsible, reputable individual or completely closed.

I guess I don't understand.
