Great story. I am surprised that my step-dad never told us about this since he was stationed in Camp Pendleton during the time she would have been there. It would have been a pretty cool story to pass along.

Reckless was a war Hero! Not too many would want such a title but for Reckless a horse to have done what she did is certainly an Honor to call her a HERO! Thanks Dandelion for this post.

Love it! Reminds me of Sgt. Stubby! :) There are a lot of four-footed, and four-hooved, heroes in our military that are never recognized or talked about much in the media or in civilian circles, They remain unsung and that is sad. Very few get this kind of recognition and they should. Thanks, Dandelion, for posting!

Wow....and she was so tiny, probably 14 hands at most.
A wonderful tribute story. Thanks, Dandelion - you always post a story to get to my heart.

Lovely story -lovely horse ,but I have always been upset that horses are used in battle ,the charge of the light brigade was one of them, their use in the American civil war ,and another ,where our Australian soldiers on horses attacked a place in the middle east -after a long charge,-can't remember the name ,I love horses ,and I think how frightened they must have been, they are such beautiful animals ,but aren't always given the respect they deserve.

Sometimes angels come in the unexpected forms of our fellow creatures, and Reckless was indeed one of them. Thanks to everyone who honored and kept her safe. We need to hear more good stories like this one.

Animals saved thousands of lives during World War II.
The highest medal for animal bravery is the Dickin Metal.
Of the 54 Dickin Medals awarded for the war, 18 went to dogs, 3 to horses, 1 to a cat... and 32 to pigeons.

I'll forever remember Reckless. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. She did all this and never asked anything in return. She didn't even want to go to war. God Bless her soul.
