Buffy Sainte Marie...No No Keshagesh....Greedy Guts

World  (tags: Earth Day, Buffy Sainte Marie, No No Keshagesh, Greedy Guts, First Nations, Cree Indian )

This is my contribution for Earth Day this year. Who better a spokesperson than Buffy Sainte Marie, a First Nations Cree Indian, who has sung of the injustices done upon this planet for a half Century now.

Keshagesh means Greedy Guts.

It's what you call a little puppy who eats his own and then wants everybody else's.

I never saw so many business suits
Never knew a dollar sign could look so cute
Never knew a junkie with a money jones
Who's buying Park Place? Who's buying Boardwalk?

These old men they make their dirty deals
Go in the back room and see what they can steal
Talk about your beautiful for spacious skies
It's about uranium. It's about the water rights

Got Mother Nature on a luncheon plate
They carve her up and call it real estate
Want all the resources and all of the land
They make a war over it; they blow things up for it

The reservation out at Poverty Row
The cookin's cookin and the lights are low
Somebody tryin to save our Mother Earth I'm gonna
Help em to Save it and Sing it and Pray it singin

No No Keshagesh you can't do that no more.

Ol Columbus he was lookin good
When he got lost in our neighborhood
Garden of Eden right before his eyes
Now it's all spyware Now it's all income tax

Ol Brother Midas lookin hungry today
What he can't buy he'll get some other way
Send in the troopers if the Natives resist
Same old story, boys; that's how ya do it , boys

Look at these people Lord they're on a roll
Got to have it all; gotta have complete control
Want all the resources and all of the land
They break the law over it; blow things up for it

While all our champions are off in the war
Their final rippoff here at home is on
Mister Greed I think your time has come I'm gonna
Sing it and Say it and Live it and Pray it singin

No No Keshagesh you can't do that no more.

Buffy's "Universal Soldier" is a lesson we still must learn, too. That one's been trying for decades to teach us right from tragic. . . I'm still hoping we'll get it. Thanks for the reminder, Dandelion.

Love it, and like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this Buffy is out to slay monsters who seek world domination and the control of all resources for their own benefit. Great video and message--thanks Dandelion!

Agreed, no better spokesperson than her! Thanks so much for spotlighting on that powerful, great great lady !
Your video made me want to hear and see more of her, so I did. The whole album (Running for the drum) is great and I really wonder why she is not popular and better known over here.

The Powers to be have done what they can to silence her voice over here. Took her off the radio for speaking Truth back in the sixties, and seventies. But she continued on, one concert, one album, one speech at a time. She had a few years on Sesame Street that she taught indigenous rights and ways to children.

I glad you checked into some more of her music Angelika. For those of us who have known her, she has been a very special woman to us and we have been her supporters for years.

Yep, Buffy fights on, I think many us have followed her for years. Now if we can just get it together and end this farce.

Last night I watch a very good documentary on the building of Hoover Dam. Man is always trying to tame or control nature. Some of the things the film brought to light I may have known but forgotten over time. These men were so desperate for work they worked for near slave wages, till they finally had enough. While they worked their families lived outside of a tiny town, not much of a town just a stop in the road. Their families lived outside of town in place labeled "rag town" with little water and less food. That town was named Las Vegas. Only after a massive strike did the "Six Companies" finally begin to pay a slightly fairer wage, build "slapped" together housing for the families and barracks for single men. The end game was of course profit. The result a human marvel that was compared to the pyramids, but movement west quickly rendered the Hoover dam as not up to the task, it was meant to supply electricity and water for 1.3 million people. Some how it's always the companies that are remembered, but the architect that finished off the exterior remembered those who had given their lives for this project and included a memorial plaque. Do we build memorials to remember or forget?

It took 25 minutes to watch the video with all the modem interruptions. I thought I was being smart in switching from a Clear modem to a T-Mobile modem. I am on a plan that cost half as much as my Clear modem, which is great financially. However, I am truly getting what I am paying for, along with a nervous breakdown.

I cannot afford a hybrid car or an electric car in order to reduce my carbon blueprint on the planet. So, I have begun cutting cost from living conditions to luxuries. I hope by December, I might be able to manage an investment in a new hybrid car.

Well, back to the video. On the second running and watching of the video, I was finally catching the true message. On the third time running and watching the video, I was enjoying the music very much! I never heard of Buffy Sainte Marie before. It is nice to see that she is an older woman in the music/activist business. The music and the words are impressive. However, one must give a lot of credit to the director of the video! There is some very nice film footage of the stage performance!

I went to and could not find anything on her. So, I went to and found more than 20 albums listed. She apparently started her career in the 1970s. She must have a large, strong and loyal following to be able to produce so many albums. Most every album is MP3 downloadable. When I have time, I will sample her numerous albums. I cannot now, because I must get ready for work! Everyone have a very nice day!

I hear the marching of Rainbow Warriors.

It is predicted that we win.

And other groups are with us as well. I'm studying Jewish Kabbalah. For years it was forbidden to anyone who hadn't studied Judahism for 20 or more years. It has been released in an attempt to save this planet. There are many other groups as well who are united with us in purpose..

This entire sector of the universe, our planes and the planes above it are alerted and have been for near 100 years. We have more help than we can imagine. Meanwhile our planet is in quarantine. Those who have sold their souls to receive for self alone aren't going to get to hide out anywhere.

Numerous are the predictions that we wln!

Let's believe for it and let that "certainty" promote action! action! action!

What I have to say may get me in trouble, but, I will say it anyway!!! I will God do his job, and I will just trust him! I cannot try and, explain life! But, I do want to quote you a message from the Virgin Mother of Christ of Lourdes, France to St. Bernadette! ( I cannot promise you happiness in this life only in the next life of the ever after)!!! This Earth is filled with trials, and, I will trust in the Lord, and let God be God! He knows what to do! He can, and will get this Earth back together again! After watching The Hunger Games you realize that all Justice will be served for humans, animals, and the Earth. Always, Janet Brown

Truth is Truth. No one tells it better than Buffy St. Marie , always just a humble woman of Cree heritage lending her voice and her talents to speak up for Native peoples and on behalf of our Mother Earth.

I never saw so many business suits
Never knew a dollar sign could look so cute
Never knew a junkie with a money jones
Who's buying Park Place? Who's buying Boardwalk?
Last week a group of us did Street Theater outside of the Bank of America -- the TOP FORECLOSURE institution in the country!
People dressed as MONOPOLY characters -- the Capitalist with the Top Hat, the Prisoner in Striped Clothes, the Policeman with his Stick..... others wore sandwich-board "houses" with "foreclosed" written across them.
Passers-by were given Monopoly Money and asked to roll some dice. The dice had one side reading "99%" and 5 sides reading "1%" -- needless to say, most of the time, the "1%" came up!
And, on those rare occasions when the "99%" came up -- the guy with the Top Hat took his cane and turned it over so it read "1%" again! The "1%" ALWAYS won! {Just like in Real Life.}

The weather was beautiful, we took pictures and videos, lots of cute little kids with their parents helped us play the Monopoly Game, we gave them a "consolation prize" of some Monopoly Money to take home -- with slogans written on it!
Fun was had by all. Amazing what Creative People can come up with.
{Does this give anyone ideas....???}

Buffy Ste-Marie is definitely one of the Creatives.....

Great for earth day especially from an indigenous person. I'm sure all tribes have the same thoughts regarding the enviroment.

Every time there is an oil spills, or some uranium contamination I myself get disgusted by the government's own policies and the pandering to corporations and greed. There is much more oil drilling going on than ever. So what that means is the destruction of mother earth has accelerated.

Barbara T (431)

The Street Theater "Monopoly" Game person, playing the Prisoner in the striped clothes, was of course representing the PROTESTERS, imprisoned in a big cardboard box with cutout "bars".
Every once in a while, another of us Protestors {REAL protesters!} would take a turn in the fake "jail"....
Such props are very easy to make. Lotsa good ideas out there......

Politicians such as Obama who carry out corporate agendas while speaking in the language of populism become enemies of liberal democracies. Labor unions, environmentalists, anti-war activists and civil libertarians, blinded by the images and lies disseminated by public relations offices, stop watching what these politicians do. They mute their criticism to give these politicians, whose rhetoric is rarely matched by reality, a chance.

The result accelerates our disempowerment. It is also, more ominously, a discrediting of traditional liberal democratic values. The longer the liberal class does not vigorously denounce expanded oil drilling, our corporate health insurance bill and the National Defense Authorization Act, simply because these initiatives have been pushed through by the Democrats, the more marginal the left becomes.

If Bush had carried these policies, “liberal” pundits would have thundered with feigned outrage. The hypocrisy of the American left is too blatant to ignore. And it has effectively left us disempowered as a political force.
Chris Hedges

We get more right wing extremist the longer the Left doesn't truly stand up for what it really should.

You're right about the squashing of anyone against the status quot through our lifetimes. We heard Buffy and many others rarely. All those with a political bent were sent "on the road". The smallest audience was the goal. Remember The Smothers Brothers Show? Gone. Dylan and many other artists were kept on the sidelines whenever possible.
Get rid of those "money Joneses"...thanx Sheryl and Buffy

Don't know HOW i missed this back in April.

I love Buffy St Marie & still have a few of her LPs.
Later when I sang with a bluegrass group, I had them include some of her songs in our repertoire, not the hardest, heartbreaking historical ones ('My Country 'Tis Of Thy People You're Dying'), but those that could be adapted to bluegrass style, like 'My Piney Wood Home,' & 'Many a Mile.'

Just noticed a few of the words I had placed on for the lyrics were not correct, so much for one of the sites to get lyrics. This is the correction.

Keshagesh means Greedy Guts.

It's what you call a little puppy who eats his own and then wants everybody else's.

I never saw so many business suits.
Never knew a dollar sign that looked so cute.
Never knew a junkie with a money Jones:
He's singing, "Who's selling Park Place. Who's buying Boardwalk"?

These old men they make their dirty deals.
Go in the back room and see what they can steal.
Talk about your beautiful and spacious skies.
It's about uranium; it's about the water rights.

Put Mother Nature on a luncheon plate.
They cut her up and call it real estate.
Want all the resources and all of the land.
They make a war over it: Blow things up for it.

The reservation now is poverty row.
There's something cooking and the lights are low.
Somebody's trying to save our mother earth.
I'm gonna help them to save it,
To sing it and bring it

Singing: No no Keshagesh:
You can't do that no more, (no more, no more no more)
No, no, no, no Keshagesh
You can't do that no more, (no more, no more no more)
No, no, no, no Keshagesh
You can't do that no more, (no more, no more no more)
No, no, no, no Keshagesh
You can't do that no more, (no more, no more no more)

Ole Columbus he was looking good,
When he got lost in our neighborhood.
Garden of Eden right before his eyes.
Now it's all spy ware: now it's all income tax.

Ole' brother Midas looking hungry today.
What he can't buy he'll get some other way.
Send in the troopers if the natives resist.
Old, old story boys, that's how you do it boys.

Look at these people; ah they're on a roll.
Gonna have it all, gonna have complete control.
Want all the resources and all of the land.
They'll break the law for it: Blow things up for it.

When all our champions are off in the war,
Their final rip off here and is always on.
Mr. greed I think your time has come.
We're gonna sing it and pray it and live it then say it.

You can't do that no more

Excellent. I"m glad while she is still alive she is getting her just due. Awesome woman and has spoken out for human and environmental rights for years. Buffy Sainte-Marie’s profile in the United States diminished significantly when she was blacklisted in the ’70s.

Recognizing the power of her songwriting and activism, the administrations of both Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon considered her an artist to be suppressed. Buffy Sainte-Marie all but disappeared from the US music industry. Thankful for Europe, Canada, and those of us who knew her from both the indigenous and activists camps in the USA, kept her music alive.

She also just won another award not too long ago, receiving $50,000 for receiving of it. She said:

"I've got an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, a couple of Junos and a Gemini. This is the only award that gives the artist money." — Buffy Sainte-Marie in her Polaris Music Prize acceptance speech."

I've been meaning to place on this video with her so this is as good of a time as any.

Thanks for coming back to this article and leaving this information.
