Honoring the Life of Russell Means

The family of Russell Means invites you to join us in “Honoring the Life of Russell Means”. The honoring will highlight his life, leadership and the eternal fire that he re-ignited throughout Indian Country.

October 24, 2012, begins at 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. MST, at Little Wound High School Gymnasium in Kyle, South Dakota USA, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Russell Means, a self-described “Oglala Freedom Fighter”, began his journey to the spirit world at 4:44 am, with the Morning Star, at his home and ranch in Porcupine.

This Honoring will be the first of four opportunities for the people to honor his life. The next three Honorings are tentatively scheduled as follows: 2nd Honoring at Wounded Knee ’73 Occupation Memorial (Feb 2013); 3rd Honoring at Wind Cave State Park, SD (June 2013); 4th Honoring on Russell’s birthday (Nov 10, 2013) at location to be determined.

There will be a designated media area at the Honoring on Wednesday at Little Wound School. Press credentials required.

Contributions of star quilts, blankets and food to feed the people will be appreciated, and may be brought on Wednesday, October 22, directly to Little Wound High School, Kyle, South Dakota.

Awesome video and I will purchase the book.I remember many of the issues that Russell Means was active in.He was and is an inspiration. I too (like Angelika) made a mental note about what he said "the universe having a female and male balance" and I agree it needs to be said and thought of in THAT order.I have thought this for a very long time now and obviously we are not alone in our sense of order to the universe. I never knew that about clouds.Am excited to read the book.Thanks Dandelion

Wonderful video-wish I could have met the gentleman. I have had the pleasure of meeting many Native Americans from many tribes across the country through powwow gatherings and they all impressed me. My child has danced with them and we have enjoyed their storytellers. We were treated as honored guests. A very wise group of people-in tune with the world around them-if only the rest of us were so in tune-our Mother would not be so damaged. I just purchased the book and love it. I hope the young people of all the tribes find their way back to the true values. Thanks for sharing-I will treasure the book.

Thank you Ellen, yes, the heart is heavy, it normally is this time of year as my husband took his Spirit Walk on October 26th 9 years ago, but time is a strange thing, sometimes that is long time ago but for a loss it seems like yesterday too. So two men, both warriors in my mind and people who cared a lot for the people are forever linked at this time.

I am so sorry for this loss to humanity. Thank you for informing us dear Dandelion, and I regret your personal pain.

Indeed, in our patriarchal world, we have excess of masculine energy, and we need to limit it by adding more feminine forces. This will create a dynamic tension between the feminine and masculine energies, leading to balance and social and environmental harmony.

Our political leaders do not understand that. Instead they promote ever more masculine individual economic profit maximization based on dominating society and exploiting nature both of which are feminine entities. The only ones that benefit from that system are the political and economic elites, or the 1percent, or the billionaires. In the process the feminine society and nature suffer, they are the 99 percent, the poor.

The diversity Russell Means is talking about relates to the feminine. In a masculine, patriarchal world all is one and alike. What an amazing, proud and inspirational man. His speech brought tears to my eyes. I've always admired the Native Indians, their way of life, admiration of their ancestors & trying to follow in their footsteps and their respect for Mother Earth. My daughter will be visiting N.Y next week and I've already asked her to get the book for me. I'm looking forward to reading "If you've forgotten the names of the clouds, you've lost your way" Freedom Fighter you will be greatly missed to all humanity.

Last night I happened to see an excellent speech Russell Means gave, on "The 11th Hour". The subject was , "Challenging the Euro Centric view of the World". He was very eloquent, it was very thought provoking.
