From Wikepedia-The Origins of November 5
Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night and Firework Night, is an annual commemoration observed on 5 November, primarily in Great Britain. Its history begins with the events of 5 November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London, and months later the introduction of the Observance of 5th November Act enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot's failure.

Guy Fawkes (13 April 1570 31 January 1606), also known as Guido Fawkes, the name he adopted while fighting for the Spanish in the Low Countries, was a member of a group of provincial English Catholics who planned the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605.
Fawkes was born and educated in York. His father died when Fawkes was eight years old, after which his mother married a recusant Catholic. Fawkes later converted to Catholicism and left for the continent, where he fought in the Eighty Years' War on the side of Catholic Spain against Protestant Dutch reformers. He travelled to Spain to seek support for a Catholic rebellion in England but was unsuccessful. He later met Thomas Wintour, with whom he returned to England.
Wintour introduced Fawkes to Robert Catesby, who planned to assassinate King James I and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. The plotters secured the lease to an undercroft beneath the House of Lords, and Fawkes was placed in charge of the gunpowder they stockpiled there. Prompted by the receipt of an anonymous letter, the authorities searched Westminster Palace during the early hours of 5 November, and found Fawkes guarding the explosives. Over the next few days, he was questioned and tortured, and eventually he broke. Immediately before his execution on 31 January, Fawkes jumped from the scaffold where he was to be hanged and broke his neck, thus avoiding the agony of the mutilation that followed.
Fawkes became synonymous with the Gunpowder Plot, the failure of which has been commemorated in England since 5 November 1605. His effigy is traditionally burned on a bonfire, commonly accompanied by a firework display.

Thanks so much Dandelion. You just remind me of the time I went to study in England an English friend of mine told me about him. We didn't play any firework but I remember how he is against the monarchy, to me, means any corrupt ruler whatever the name. That's how we get along!!!

Linda thanks for sharing the history on Guy Fawkes and November 5.

SJ J. you are correct this is what the Guy Fawkes and the mask is all about, any corrupt ruler or leadership, the Government going awry.

It is a powerful speech B. Mutiny, and you are most welcome. I hope the people that come to this thread really listen to it.

I wonder if some will get the idea to re-enact - but there would always be more politicians that are just as bad to take their place - it is celebrated throughtout the commonwealth even in little NZ

I think that voice over is done by the man who played the creator of the Matrix. And one of those protagonists is a lycan, or was. From Underworld. :^) I'd love one of those masks. Just to have. Thanks.

There are various places one can buy the mask online. I did a quick look and all I did was place in the search window "where can I buy a Guy Fawkes mask" and came up with one for under $3 and another for $7, so they seem rather reasonable in price Gene.

I was just wondering about this so very timely, Dandelion! Also thinking about a mask - seems everyone could afford one - Even if we're not near a march, just wearing the mask that day could be interesting....

It is amusing to hear some Americans talking about the founding fathers and their devotion to Christian principles in the founding of the US. But the founding fathers intended the separation of church and state, and the events around the capture and death of Guy Fawkes, which was indicative of religious persecution in England, is emblematic of the need for separation of church and state..

In Canada, as part of the Commonwealth, we hear of Guy Fawkes Day but for the most part, I am not aware of a celebration. Although, with the recent scandals around the Canadian Senate (equivalent to the UK's House of Lords), maybe a non violent, non destructive reminder would be in order.

@ Arielle --- Wouldn't that start conversations! I'm with you on that.

@ Linda Rust --- Thanks for the bio and info.

This short video sure says a lot, Dandelion. The narrator calls for discourse. We are faced with the loss of our freedom to express our ideas and principles. We are being silenced. Who let this happen? Look in the mirror. Fear is the root of your abject and blind obedience. It has corrupted your power of reason and robbed you of common sense. We all need to discuss this, to bring it into the light of day, and say no to fear. Thanks, Dandelion.

A lot of what he says is painfully applicable to the United States today. We have let the gub-mint stealthily chip away at our most precious civil rights. Corporate CEOs have allowed themselves to succumb to greed, and listen to the soulless bean counters instead of their consciences. Unless we act NOW, unless we raise hell NOW, we will be slaves in a brutal dictatorship. The reason why the civil rights movement succeeded is because a courageous handful of people were willing to go out and do something, protest peacefully, raise their voices. Indeed, if you want to see who is responsible for allowing this country to go to hell in a handbasket, go look in a mirror.

Wow. "And the truth is, there is something very wrong with this country..." Goosebumps here, epecially because parts of this speech so pertains to America, right now. Thank you so much. I will now have to make certain I see this movie. The voice reminds me of Richard Chamberlain's in those musketeer movies.

As I've said before, not everyone is able to get to major cities due to health or cost. However most of us live in or near small towns, that have a square, park, town hall, bank, so make a sign. I support November 5th or another with you deepest concern, there are many, shouldn't be hard, everything from No to GMO's to get rid of Patriot Act and NDAA, no to the TPP, or Stop Keystone XL. That is just the tip of the iceberg. But those I find are Big key issues.

The nice thing about this time is people will either support you and wave or honk or perhaps they are not even aware of what GMO's or TPP is. Be prepared to inform them, if you can make some papers up to give to them that is great, if not at least speak to them so they then begin to know that this even exists. Ask them to look further into it. That is why I say pick a topic that moves you the most. If it's the banking situation tell them to call their Representative to pass the Glass-Steagall Bill that is being brought forth and standing in front of a bank is a good place to stand.

Be creative, we all have talents, allow yourself that freedom of expression. You are then in Solidarity with all the people in the big rallies and marches. You may find that others will stand with you, or may be there is a local paper, a short interview might be done and that will be posted, others will read it, then they'll see, if we are lucky and the mainstream media shows the major cities that, wow, we had someone in our area who was speaking on that. It begins to grow.......

Thank you, very much,
Yes, "there is something wrong in this country, has been for much too long. Reminds me of the lines: "There is something happening here. What it is aint exactly clear. There is a man with a gun over there...step out of line and the man comes and takes you away. Hey whats that sound, everybody look whats going down."
Sorry, but there is something weird in my system: it does not like me to type apostrophes.
