Facial recognition proliferation of people who are identified by name in online photos, may soon let companies link a person's online persona with his or her actual offline self at a specific public location. Stops being anonymous in public.

Understand the need to check for shoplifters and sydicates...but lil ole me??? Way too many opportunities for abuse here, even by the NSA.

Well, they may not be doing it with face recognition, but a ton of stores are recording what you buy when you sign up for any of their "perks" cards, or if you use a debit card. They are keeping track of what you buy and how much you buy, and how often you come into their stores. I hate it. We are all on camera every time we go into a store or even walk down a street, too. There just isn't any more privacy anywhere.

It's so weird to watch all the predictions from books like 1984 and Brave New World come true within such a short time. Big Brother's definitely watching you, and we're all just letting them do it in the name of 'convenience.' It didn't turn out well in the books, and doesn't look good for us either.

The Minority Report by Philip K. Dick talked about just these types of issues. It was later made into a movie with Tom Cruise, & Max Von Sydow. The most troubling aspect of this new technology is the potential for merging the corporate & governmental databases, thus resulting in a country where you're tracked constantly by your facial characteristics, Big Brother anyone? We'll know if we start seeing people wearing fullface masks in public that there is pushback to this idea, as there should be.

Noted w/thanks for posting, Dandelion. I agree that while it seems that some offer some good reasons for this technology, I believe the dangers definitely outweigh the benefits. In fact, most of the benefits are to the corporations & gov't.....not to the consumer. More reason for me just to stay home....or, at least, out of malls & dept. stores.

Creepy and fraught for various abuse that we haven't yet seen the likes of. I'm glad I've got most of my life behind me.
