Yes you read that correctly. Our tax dollars at work. Don't you feel safer now? I'm still waiting for the big fish to go to jail, like the ones that robbed people of their savings, retirements, homes, jobs, tanked an economy. Think that will happen?

Barbara, I think they just should of forgot...period. Like file this in the trash container. However there is now fines and I guess the police get to keep those as the business is defunct. So when there is money to line someone's pocket, nothing too far fetched is out of the question I guess. Not to mention she had to post a $2,000 bond.

Ridiculous, either pay for the tape or a small fine but jail? Wrong, this is crazy when there are dangerous people out there. What the heck?

Even though I live three thousand miles away... I feel safer in my bed knowing this miscreant has been apprehended!

I saw this on the morning news, and thought, "Seriously, they haven't anything better to do than arrest Ms. Finley?" LOL, Terry, as I feel the same here in Texas.!!! ;-)

Are you kidding me? A WARRANT was issued for a VHS tape, which on the best day would have been worth what, $10? This is ridiculous. If that's all they have to do with their time, the Pickens County taxpayers could save a bundle simply disbanding the entire force and going to volunteer service.

Noted and tweeted. I'm curious, though. Does she still have the video?

This extreme foolishness just never ends.
We must be, forever vigilant when an injustice like this occurs. I fear many go undetected by the average person and brought to eyes of the public.

Dandelion, you are absolutely correct. The percentage of 'big fish' who go unpunished for REAL crimes is enormous. There is only one way to force change; we must never give up.
Quite frankly, I'm surprised South Carolina jailed a 'white' person for this despicable offence.

AND, people wonder why many of us wouldn't live in the South.
My apologies to our Care2 South Carolinians.

STUPID. And rapists-paedophiles+animal abusers get a stroll in the park. No wonder the US has the so many in jails--the most in the world.

I guess Barney Fife was having a slow day in Mayberry! Videocassettes are, for all means and purposes, obsolete.

This reminds me of an episode of Seinfeld where Jerry is harassed by a "library cop" for not returning a copy of "Tropic of Cancer" when he was a teenager. The "library copy" was one of the funniest character actors I've ever seen. If you want to see a clip, the Youtube link appears below:

It wan't never happen to Big fish; instead little fish like us ordinary people are more preferable to put in jail...

Steal bread from the shop and they'll put you to jail for five years, but someone steal a few millions and will get away with this...

Thanks Susanne R. for the link to Seinfeld....I have never watched the show as I do little TV viewing, but that is certainly very relative to what happened here. It gave me a chuckle but unfortunately in this woman's real life it's no laughing matter for her.

Update:
She said that after renting the movie she had to move out of state because of her husband's job and that she simply forgot about it.

"I'm no criminal, but Pickens County Sheriff's office sure made me feel like I was," she wrote. She said she never received any letters from the sheriff's office.

The Pickens County Sheriff's Office did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Noted. This is the state of the United States legal system.

Here in Florida you can end up in jail if you DON'T kill your targets. 3 attempted murders he received a sentence for but the one who got shot and is dead, there is no sentence. Trayvon Martin was killed the one who shot him is now free, but a woman who shot in the air to "scare" her abusive boyfriend away, is sent to jail. So I guess if you murder someone you walk free. If you miss your target or forget to return a VHS tape 9 years ago, you do time. Unbelievable, but is all too real in this insane asylum.

I couldn't decide whether to laugh, cry, or just shake my head. How ridiculous. However, I do feel better knowing the Pickens County Sheriffs are doing their job. Trivia about Pickens County: it is one of the first counties in SC, near GA and NC. It adjoins Transylvania Cy, NC and 3 SC counties. Pickens & Anderson Counties abut and share Clemson University.

That poor woman! Bless her heart for trying to do the right thing recently and getting busted for an old, out of date, stupid thing.

I'm just shaking in my shoes worrying about all those people out here who may have forgot to turn in an old VHS tape. You should be too! They're a real menace to society ya know! I don't know what for yet, but I'm sure the county mounties will let us know what it is, so we can better know how to protect ourselves from this evil injustice!!! LOL

I have seen some things in my time, but this takes the biscuit, in my opinion the matter is not even a Police matter nor an Arrestable Offence, this matter would come under Contract Law, (ie) Law of Tort to be listed in a Civil Court after filing a Application for Breach of Contract, Rental or Sale of Goods is a Contract between Retailer and Customer,
-
in no way is it criminal matter, if this had happed to me in the UK, I would have had a beano in Court with the Police and enjoy every second,
-
False Imprisonment and Breaching my Human Right, Rights of Movement, indeed the court would throw the book at the Police, but then again, it would not happen in the UK, I also notice from the BBC report A spokesperson for the Pickens County Sheriff's Office was unavailable to speak to the BBC.

in addition the Court would fine the Police for wasting Court Time, just a complete waste of taxpayer money, In My Opinion

its shame the Police and have nothing better to do, as for the Retailer from where the women rented the video, 9 years is a very long time,

In addition, the US Police are in a class of their own, and I mean a class of their own, LOL , unlike other Police Forces around the world, the video may have cost 10 at best, the total cost must be in the thousands or there about to the Taxpayer,

OMG!!! Honestly??? Sheeesh!!! Shaking my head over this one. When I lived in Pickens County one evening my wheelchair's charger caught fire and I called 911 and the fire dept sent a truck to my apt and one really 'hot looking' firerman came in and used huge his gloves to unplug the charger then he used two big thongs to pick up the smoking charger and put it in the kitchen sink but no police were involved.....
