2 August 2014 – Weeks of intense fighting has left medical services and facilities in the Gaza Strip “on the verge of collapse,” according to senior United Nations officials in the region who today warned that a health disaster of widespread proportions is rapidly unfolding as the conflict grinds on.

“We are now looking at a health and humanitarian disaster”, warned James W. Rawley, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in the occupied Palestinian territory, adding: “The fighting must stop immediately.”

This latest warning comes in the wake of the collapse yesterday of a humanitarian ceasefire brokered by the United Nations and the United States, which led a “profoundly shocked and disappointed” Secretary-General Ban Ki moon to state that: “Instead of giving both sides, especially Gazan civilians, a much needed reprieve to let them attend to their injured, bury their dead and repair vital infrastructure, this breach of the ceasefire is now leading to a renewed escalation.”

Joining Mr. Rawley in sounding the alarm today about the looming health catastrophe as a result of the ongoing violence are Robert Turner, Director of Operations in the Gaza Strip for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and Dr. Ambrogio Manenti, acting Head of Office of the UN World Health Organization (WHO) operations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

In a joint press release, the officials also expressed grave concern regarding the lack of protection for medical staff and facilities, and the deteriorating access to emergency health services for the 1.8 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

After more than three weeks of intense conflict, Gaza's medical services and facilities are on the verge of collapse. One third of hospitals, 14 primary healthcare clinics and 29 Palestinian Red Crescent and Ministry of Health ambulances have been damaged in the fighting.

According to the United Nations, at least five medical staff have been killed in the line of duty and tens of others have been injured. At least 40 per cent of medical staff are unable to get to their places of work such as clinics and hospitals due to widespread violence and at least half of all public health primary care clinics are closed.

In addition, in the last 24 hours, anonymous calls were made to staff at both the Najjar Hospital in Rafah and Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City warning of imminent attacks, causing major panic and chaos among patients and staff. Najjar Hospital was evacuated and remains closed due to fighting nearby.

The hospitals and clinics that are still functioning are overwhelmed: since 7 July, more that 8,000 people have reportedly been injured, many seriously. Critical supplies of medicines and disposables are almost depleted and damage and destruction of power supplies has left hospitals dependent on unreliable back-up generators, says the press release.

Al Shifa, the main referral hospital in the Gaza Strip, is inundated with casualties and people seeking safety in its grounds. “The ability to provide necessary healthcare is being severely compromised. This puts the lives of thousands of Palestinians in needless danger”, said Dr. Manenti.

Compounding this already-grave situation, an estimated 460,000 people have been displaced and are now living in overcrowded conditions in schools, with relatives or in makeshift shelters. This, coupled with lack of inadequate water and sanitation, poses serious risks of outbreak of water-borne and communicable diseases. “Hundreds of thousands of people are sheltering in terrible conditions, pushing UNRWA's coping capacity to the edge”, said Mr. Turner.

Mr. Rawley stressed that “international law sets out clear obligations on the parties to the conflict to respect the status of hospitals and medical facilities as protected objects, to respect the status of and ensure the protection of medical personnel, to ensure the protection of civilians and to respect the fundamental human right to health."

The three officials also paid tribute to Gaza's medical staff for working tirelessly in dangerous and difficult conditions to continue to provide urgently needed healthcare.

Yesterday, Mr. Rawley, along with the Minister of Social Affairs and Agriculture of the State of Palestine, Shawqi Issa, appealed for $369 million to meet urgent needs in Gaza.

Thank you, Dandelion! I took the liberty to post the whole article here ... hoping to "force" everyone to read it. Forgive me!

What is striking is the following - other than the overall situation:

"One third of hospitals, 14 primary healthcare clinics and 29 Palestinian Red Crescent and Ministry of Health ambulances have been damaged in the fighting. ... At least 40 per cent of medical staff are unable to get to their places of work such as clinics and hospitals due to widespread violence and at least half of all public health primary care clinics are closed. .... In addition, in the last 24 hours, anonymous calls were made to staff at both the Najjar Hospital in Rafah and Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City warning of imminent attacks, causing major panic and chaos among patients and staff. Najjar Hospital was evacuated and remains closed due to fighting nearby."

One third of the hospitals have been targeted so far - all terrorist nests? Hiding weapons? Mistakes?

Does ever anyone think what a huge explosion this would produce if all these "rockets, missiles and other weapons" which we are told were hidden in hospitals, schools, mosques etc. are hit by bombs? Is anyone still willing to question the stories coming out of polit-Israel to justify their crimes or are we just "eating and shutting up" as ordered?

When will the world truly step in and stop this slaughter? Or will we do the same as we did in 1945? Wringing out hands and claim that "we didn't know" - rather than admitting that we looked the other way hoping it'll be soon over?

Thank and noted Dandelion. The horrific situation is that the UN just watches and waits. Another meeting another vote no action. While we look into the faces of children in war in Gaza they are symbolic of all the children in war zones around the world. The leaders of the World have forgotten the children. If they do not care for the young and the old what hope have we got.

The UN is not a biased source and this is telling of the genocidal denial of human rights not in accordance with international law to have such a result--my heart bleeds for all the innocent victims in Gaza, especially the infants, toddlers and children who are wholly blameless.

That these two groups of people can't find a way of co-existing is a shame upon humankind. And that the USA may be backing one at the expense of the other is a shame also. Can't we learn to all get along? Poor Rodney King really said it all when he asked that question years ago after being beaten within an inch of his life by the police! I'm not exactly proud to be among the human race that continues to prove itself unable to learn that we're in this life together on this tiny planet in the great universe. We must learn to get along or we shall all perish. I'm beginning to wonder if that isn't the gift we can give to the flora and fauna of the planet. They'll be just fine without us!

I wonder if Ros is on to something. After all, Anne Frank was not killed in the Holocaust; she died of typhus as did many other concentration camp inmates. So the Holocaust revisionists can say that the Nazis did not actually kill that many people; the people died of disease.

Oh this makes me weep and pray and pray and pray - and donate to charities - as that is all I can do, and SOOO inadequate as it feels!

Susan A - I have to disagree though I sent you a green star; religion isn't the root of all evil in the world - it is humanity refusing to face up to its own faults and then projecting them onto others - which can happen in any group whether it is a knitting circle, golf club, work or some religious group. People refuse to face up to the darkness in themselves and so they blame others - when we combine Right wing rigid beliefs and a history of injustice or persecution with these same faults- and a very happy arms trade which will sell to anyone, we have a disaster on our hands and the innocents suffer, and suffer so terribly.

Israel should be charged with warcrimes/crimes against humanity. Why are they bombing schools and the only powerplant in Gaza? And today they annouced a five hour humanitarian cease-fire so that the Palestinians could go back to their homes - what homes??They are all levelled to the ground.I would like to include a statement from a Norwegian Dr. Mads Gilbert, who have been working tirelessly to help the Palestinian victims inside Gaza:

Answer: A concentration camp.

Thank you Arild I just placed the story you gave link to on the news.....this Dr. certainly from first hand daily and nightly experience can tell the horrific story. We must never become so conditioned to such things that it's treated as just "another"......

The heroes in the ambulances and in all of Gaza’s hospitals are working 12 to 24‑hour shifts, grey from fatigue and inhuman workloads (without payment in Shifa for the last four months). They care, triage, try to understand the incomprehensible chaos of bodies, sizes, limbs, walking, not walking, breathing, not breathing, bleeding, not bleeding humans. Humans!

Ashy grey faces – Oh no! not one more load of tens of maimed and bleeding. We still have lakes of blood on the floor in the emergency room, piles of dripping, blood-soaked bandages to clear out – oh – the cleaners, everywhere, swiftly shovelling the blood and discarded tissues, hair, clothes, cannulas – the leftovers from death – all taken away... to be prepared again, to be repeated all over.
Link to The Story Arild Gave That I just Mentioned Placing on If you would like to read it or note it so others can PEOPLE need to know

I agree....Concentration camp.....only instead of ovens there are bombs that incinerate those that they fall on.

What a human tragedy without end! The seed was planted when the land was partitioned to the Israelites by the colonial power without the consideration of the people who were living there. The genocide of the Jews is an atrocity, but it does not give the right of the reintroduced Jews to replace the Palestinians and perform atrocity to them especially the casualty has been done so much proportionally harmful and lethal. Israelites has a way out done the war crimes than their counterpart.

Abdesalam, you are very behind with the news, even Arab nations are condemning Hamas for their abuses. Then there is evidence Hamas using Gazans as human shields as well as firing on Israel from crowded civilian areas when there is undeveloped space that they could use. Some 25% of their rockets fall onto their own people. I have pictures of Hamas terrorists hanging little children off of a building whilst they are crying. This goes with the 160+ children that died building Hamas tunnels into Israel for murderous attacks.

Additionally, Hamas has taken over hospitals and the icing on the cake is that Israel has a mobile hospital that they prepared for Gazans to use and the PA won't let them. I pity the Gazans under the heel of both Hamas and the PA.

This suffering is due to Hamas and their genocidal hatred of Jews. This hatred of Jews, as noted in the Hamas Charter, goes back to the beginning of Islam with Muhammad's genocidal teaching of extermination of Jews so the Muslim messiah the Madhi can come:

[Sahih Muslim, book 041, number 6981] Ibn 'Umar reported Allah's messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: you will fight against the Jews and you will kill them until even a stone would say: come here, Muslim, there is a Jew (hiding himself behind me) ; kill him.

[Sahih Muslim, book 041, number 6983] Abdullah b. 'Umar reported Allah's messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: you and the Jews would fight against one another until a stone would say: Muslim, here is a Jew behind me; come and kill him.

[Sahih Bukhari, volume 4, book 52, number 176] narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: Allah’s apostle said, "you (i.e. Muslims) will fight with the Jews till some of them will hide behind stones. the stones will (betray them) saying, 'o 'Abdullah (i.e. slave of Allah)! there is a Jew hiding behind me; so kill him.'”

I agree Ros. Leading Rabbis Urge Orthodox Jews Not to Vote in Israeli Election.

Many of the greatest rabbis have always opposed voting on the grounds that it means taking part in the forbidden state and sending a representative to swear allegiance to it.

In the past, prominent opponents of participation have included the Satmar Rebbe, the Minchas Yitzchok, the Brisker Rav and the Chazon Ish. Most recently, those who oppose participation include Rabbi Yitzchok Tovia Weiss, Rabbi Moshe Sternbuch, Rabbi Yaakov Blau, Rabbi Meir Brandsdorfer, Rabbi Avrohom Yitzchok Ullman and Rabbi Dovid Soloveitchik.

I'm not supporting Hamas but what I'm leaving is something that I think a lot of people are failing to comprehend. There is a difference between Zionism and the Jewish people and it is Zionism that is destroying the Jewish people as well as the people in Gaza/Palestine.

How many years Rahman would you live in a prison without rights, decent water, freedom on mobility, and to also know that your family from the last near 70 years also had their rights taken, homes and land stolen. Tell me, after you've pleaded and tried everything else what would you do? Sometimes desperate people accept desperate measures.........and then you go and blame the victims!

Not one ounce of compassion did I see out of your statement for what this story was about. Very sad.

Where is the outrage from you who claim to care so much about such things, over the muslim occupation of Jerusalem for so long and their deliberate outrage of building their al Aqsa mosque and Dome of the Rock (covered in Qur'anic verses of hate toward non-muslims - and there are many of those if you would bother to read the book - you too Abdessalam), over the holiest site to Jews - the Temple Mount, and they won't allow Jews to stand on that site and pray. If it were the other way around you would be frothing at the mouth, wouldn't you? Hypocrites.

No Arab or Muslim nation has done anything for the so-called Palestinians and have shunned and persecuted them. Where is your outrage. And you Abdessalam, the great Taqqyia artist, what has your country done for them? Nothing. You've built a wall to keep them out too. And the Palestianians have sat on their lazy butts all the years that the Jews have been building the most per capita productive society in the world and taken in all the many Jews expelled from muslim occupied lands where they and Christians, Buddhists, Hindus et al lived long before the violent politico-pseudo religion of Islam swept in and oppressed them all and plundered them.

There is not an islamic hate teaching you won't ignore or defend. Hamas has been abusing its own people for years. Where is your outrage over their persecution of Christians, the oppression of women and the torture and murder of gays - who all find refuge in Israel, the only free democracy in the whole region of darkness, superstition, ignorance, hate and intolerance. israel has a large Arab and Muslim population that has equal rights and there is freedom of religion for all - none of which is found in Gaza, the West Bank or any other muslim occupied land - all of which were forcibly conquered by islam. Where is your criticism of this?

Here is the HAMAS CHARTER:
Let's see you defend this. Change the words from Jews etc to Muslims and you would be hysterical with rage over what it says, wouldn't you. Hypocrites all of you:

'Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it.' (Preamble)

'[Peace] initiatives, and so-called peaceful solutions and international conferences are in contradiction to the principles of the Islamic Resistance Movement... Those conferences are no more than a means to appoint the infidels as arbitrators in the lands of Islam... There is no solution for the Palestinian problem except by Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are but a waste of time, an exercise in futility.' (Article 13)

[T]he Islamic Resistance Movement aspires to the realisation of Allah’s promise, no matter how long that should take. The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him salvation, has said:

'The Day of Judgment will not come about until Moslems fight Jews and kill them. Then, the Jews will hide behind rocks and trees, and the rocks and trees will cry out: 'O Moslem, there is a Jew hiding behind me, come and kill him.' (Article 7)((related by al-Bukhari and Muslim - Bukhari:V4B52N177 ).)

(Article 8) of the Hamas charter, reads: “Allah is its target, the Prophet is its model, the Koran its constitution: Jihad is its path and death for the sake of Allah is the loftiest of its wishes.”

If Hamas, the cowards, didn't use their own children as human shields and place their rocket launchers in hospitals, schools and residential neighborhoods, and if they would believe in living peacefully with Israel, founded by Jews 3000 years ago, and spent their handouts in billions they get from all but the islamic world on hospitals etc they would maybe have made something of their land. Where is your outrage over all of this? They have been murdering those who they call collaborators and 120 children were killed in forced labor building their tunnels to spread terror in Israel. Where is your outrage? Hypocrites.

No country would allow rockets to be fired into it daily for months on end without responding. Would yours?

Here's a Muslim who risks his life to renounce his life of hating Jews and Israel, taught by Islam:

A Proud Muslim Zionist (who actually took the time to study the issues and actually visited Israel and found a free and prosperous land that no Muslim dominated country could match in freedom and progress). You ought to read it all of you haters of Israel and deniers of the fascist dictators of Gaza and the hateful tenets of the religion that inspires and commands them. You especially Abdelassam - lets you hear you renounce all the 1400 years of Islamic violence, mass murder and oppression - 80 million murdered in your ancestors' conquest of India alone - called the bloodiest in human history - and why? because Buddhists and Hindus and jains refused to convert to your religion of war, violence and hate.

Carola this story was about one simple thing, a UN report of a health disaster. Please stay on topic. Either you care about these children today in Gaza or you'll continue to leave many words about many things and not at all speak on what this particular story was about.

That is the trouble I see with so many on here you don't even speak to the actual story. If you can't in all of that wording even speak upon what I left then I feel sorry for you. But that is what I see, you want to muddy the waters instead of expressing how you might help or how we might help these children.

I don't suppose in all your copy and paste you could leave a donation to Save The Children....After all that was what this thread was all about, not for more hate mongering.

Again Rob and Jay, this story wasn't about the last 1,400 years but about making a donation to Save The Children to because of a pending health crisis. It was to the likes of you, and others that I see on here that are so quick to throw out all of this stuff, rather than keeping it simple and either FEEL some compassion for the children or just move on that I started to find out what is actually taking place over there. I'm not going to dance with you on here, that wasn't the point of this simple story..........a current health crisis. A story by the UN. You have done more to push many of us away from whatever you leave by the hateful tone you always leave on the threads.

Thank you Susanne, at least you seem to understand what this particular story was all about. A humanitarian story. People who are so filled with more negatives than positives always try to undermine even a story as simple as this......a humanitarian story.

Very sad for the lot of them.

Dandelion, the lives of the Palestinian children, let alone their health, is in the hands of 2 terrorists groups, Hamas and the PA. Neither care about the Gazans and that point needs to be made and addressed. If you ignore it, as you normally do, then you are allowing these children to suffer.

I think the world needs to know and condemn the action of Hamas using civilians, especially children, as human shields. I note that you did not condemn Hamas's behaviour on any of the stories that many people have put up so it seems that it is acceptable for the PA to refuse medical treatment when it is offered freely for the very people that you are saying need help.

And this help is being offered despite Hamas using Palestinian children to go to Israeli soldiers and telling them they need medical help. 3 IDF soldiers were killed when they took the children to a hospital because there was a suicide bomb planted on one or more of them. Sadly, the children no longer needed any help.

Abdesalam would never condemn such behaviour but I am disgusted with you, and the people on this board, that they do not condemn such behaviour and ask their governments to ensure that this is stopped.

As a point of interest, over 80% of people murdered worldwide each year are Christians in 4 Muslim controlled countries one of which is Egypt. What do any of you do about it? As Abdesalam obviously has no objection to it nothing he says is of interest or relevance.

Would you care to list all those stories Ge, how nice of you to track my every move.

I posted a story about a humanitarian crisis and a link to offer a donation to Save The Children. You come on to say you are disgusted with me......pretty pathetic of you Ge. And the people on this board, nice of you to at least add in everyone, your friends. With that attitude you will be getting rather lonely on here.

And I have asked my Govt. to stop this and have in fact placed petitions onto C2 concerning that very thing, I don't suppose you signed them. I am against all killing, Hamas and otherwise, but you seem to fail to see that if someone isn't just one sided like you are.

Again, for those coming onto this thread I placed this story on put out by the UN alerting a health crisis. I added a link for those who would like to make a donation to Save The Children.

Some have chosen to use this link to spew their hatred on instead of offering their compassion. It amazes me how something to help children can be twisted so much and I've also been insulted by one writer in particular twice now on this thread for simply trying to raise awareness of this health crises by a story placed out by the UN. Perhaps she should address her feelings to the UN rather than insulting every poster upon this thread.
