National Honey Bee Day - Petitions

Environment  (tags: beekeepers, National Honey Bee Day, Sustainable Gardening Begins with Honey , backyard gardens )

While the bee industry is vital to large agriculture that feeds much of the world, reality is that 98% of all who keep bees are backyard beekeepers. Most of them are in towns, cities, suburban areas, and not on traditional farms.

Provide a honey bee haven with access to pesticide-free food, shelter and water. It doesn't take much space — a few containers of the right kinds of plants tucked into your garden, on a balcony or front stoop, will get you started.

Protect bees from pesticides. Pesticides kill beneficial insects including pollinators and natural enemies that control common pests like aphids. Certain pesticides, including neonicotinoids, are highly toxic to honey bees in particular. Instead of using pesticides, explore organic ways to grow healthy plants, such as using compost for healthy soil and controlling pests with homemade remedies and biocontrols like ladybugs.

Provide a variety of food for bees. Consider clustered plantings with staggered blooming times so there is food throughout the year and particularly in the late summer and fall. Native plants are always best, and inter-planting and hedgerows provide additional forage on farms.

Provide a year-round, clean source of water for bees. This can be a river, pond, irrigation system, rainwater collection system or small-scale garden water features. Shallow water sources can provide more than enough water for bees, without creating opportunities for mosquitoes to breed.

Provide shelter for bees. Leave some ground undisturbed and untilled and some dead trees and plants on the property for wild bees to nest in.

~Force 1. Your signature has been recorded. Please spread the word: THIS IS AMAZING NEWS. I WAS COMPLETELY UNAWARE. I Love the little nursery/hardware store (what's better then that?) I pick up fertilizers and emergency items as I order most seeds online. The ladies are LOVELY as in a small town. I find myself ready to EXPLODE while hearing someone request Round Up every time I go. Home Depot is only a few miles down the road and from this day forward I will support their AWESOME ACCOMPLISHMENTS!

Thank you for these petitions Sheryl. It doesn't give one a lot of confindence when the EPA has acknowledged that neonics are a threat to bees but still does nothing. But i guess with enough public pressure things will slowly change.

Then there's the good ol' US policy that states a chemical must be proven dangerous AFTER it's marketed before it will be regulated, instead of requiring the chemical company to prove it is safe before unleashing it. It would certainly help if people would stop buying every damn poison the chemical industry tells them they need to get rid of "pests". We're gonna learn the hard way that there is no winning the war against nature.

All Gladly Signed, Shared & Noted this too! Thank You So Much Sheryl & SuSanne for sending over!!! Our bees are in peril and we need to help insure their survival. We had honey bees come into an outside cable area unit and the cable company wanted to "Get Them Out By Spaying!!!" I went into action and made calls to find a beekeeper, before they returned, to come and help save them. Well, it turned out that when the outside cover was disturbed the Queen probably left having the hive compromised and the rest abandoned the hive as well. Not one was harmed!! ~~
