Tell the UN: devise a plan to rectify Fujimori's gross attacks on human rights in Peru.

From 1990 to 2000, hundreds of thousands of women in Peru experienced forced sterilizations on behalf of Peru's president at the time Alberto Fujimori. The sterilizations were a part of his aggressive family planning plan, aimed to cut birth rates significantly. Most of the women targeted were poor and from impoverished areas, and therefore had little access to family planning resources or help that could otherwise protect them from the forced sterilization. It's clear that President Fujimori preyed on these women. Many times, the women couldn't even choose whether they wanted the procedure done or not.

Over this period of time, sterilizations were performed by unqualified people and often without anesthetics. As a result, many of the women suffered permanent physical and emotional stress.

The UN still has not taken steps to rectify this situation — whether it be holding Fujimori responsible or providing assistance to the affected women.

Sickening! This is just as bad as denying women birth control so they are forced to have children they cannot properly raise. Choice means CHOICE!

I agree Freya ~ over 300,000 women were sterilized, 300,000 who had no say, no power.

Noted but when I signed and submitted it, I was informed that I already had done so.

But thank you, Beverly, for publicizing this disgraceful practice of involuntary sterilization.

It is just something Hitler would have forced on Jews. Disgusting. Women must have a choice to decide whether or not they want the procedure, and education and contraceptives would have done the trick. Forcing women to sterilization is a violation of human rights, and should be taken to international court as such a case.

How horrible that this happened. I can't even begin to imagine the loss these women felt in enduring sterilization and subsequent inability to have children. My heart goes out to them. Justice must be done!

Everyone has the right to the integrity and dignity of his whole being.
No-one should be forced to do anything against his/her will.
This is why I am supporting any action that will fight against these abuses, including this one against forced women's sterilization.

We are so far away, from this situation, one can only hope that our collective attitude will make an impact. Sometimes, world pressure makes a difference.
Most countries don't wish to be perceived as Neanderthal, by the rest of the world.
However, it depends on the POWER & CONTROL structure, as it is in the U.S.A.
