They call them “twisters” in tornado alley and know that these devastating storms can smash houses and uproot lives. On Monday, May 20, the tornado that touched down in Moore, OK, left nearly a mile wide path of destruction, leveling homes, schools, and a hospital. A day earlier, the community of Shawnee saw a twister scatter their belongings to the winds as shown in this photo.

Even before the tornadoes struck, Oklahoma’s hardworking food banks and other charities were providing thousands of meals daily to communities in the “fifth hungriest state in the nation.”

A storm like this leaves those charities with an even greater need for their services. Your click today will help us give 1,000 meals as well as additional care and help for victims of these tornadoes.

Tornado season continues through late summer, threatening storms with flooding and hail in addition to high winds.’s charity partners provide food, shelter, medical attention, and emergency supplies, helping to straighten out lives struck by twisters.

I'm interested in this magic 'click;' thing.
Is this a popularity contest to see which people get help and which don't?
Is this how we want disaster relief to work?
Where is the money coming from?
Is this not important? Is it tax deductable - In which case, it's robbing exactly the organisations what need the money to deal with this on a regular basis.
Why is this not funded from taxes anyway?
(That'd be the taxes that the likes of Shell and Texaco have avoided paying although they are the ones making the most profits from Global Warming - their profits have hit an all-time high.
What do those who are further increasing Climate Change have to say about the 'acceptable risk' of pumping ever-more CO2 into our air? Have they been asked?
Having clicked, what are we doing to campaign against the increasing in Global Warming which is causing more of these disasters every year?
This year, it's news. In ten years time, this will be like reporting children killed by cars -Catastrophic to those involved. Too depressingly monotonous to most people to report it.
Please, can we have a campaign linking this man-made disaster with the way we're screwing up our climate?!

I didn't see anyone answer Simon, but skimmed, so if this is redundant, excuse me. These are not scams, the clicks do wonderful work which is paid for by advertisers on the site. I've been visiting daily since it came online with just the Hunger Site in the late 90's. There's no trick, the giving is real. Not only do I visit this site but another a friend of mine from here showed me which is just as wonderful and does great work too. It is called Care To Click and I visit it daily now as well, I hope others will as well. Doing good was never so easy and all it costs is a couple minutes of your time. :^)

Angelika R. (145)
Thursday May 23, 2013, 10:41 am
Thx Gene for mentioning that site (has also been in my countless daily click sites for long). Care to click may be particularly helpful now as it also provides a desaster relief cause, along with many others. I assume our dear Sioux (Ani MaeCh i. ) has this and all others in her click to donate group.

Barbara Tomlinson (431)
Thursday May 23, 2013, 10:42 am
"Click to Donate" sites are really no different from other Private Charities.
Sponsors with money, pay for the Clicks - partly to draw attention to stuff they may be selling, to their businesses. {In the case of the Greater Good Network, which sponsors the abovementioned Clicks, it is Fair Trade businesses and workshops which treat workers fairly and which are WORTH supporting.}

Some other click-to-donate sites are sponsored by various businesses as good advertising, and to create a favorable Public Image.
So click-to-donate sites are just another form of Private Charitable Giving in which you are invited to participate. This ought to be SUPPLEMENTAL to organized Disaster Relief measures by the govt. The govt ought to NOT fall down on the job, as it did after Hurricane Katrina for example. In the case of Hurricane Sandy, the poorest areas affected are STILL waiting for relief! Sometimes Private Charity, unfortunately, is ALL that people have to rely on....
Simon, I get what you are driving at, I think. People ought not to sit back and say, "I clicked, that's ALL I need to do!" Solves our Guilt Feelings! If that was the response expected, that WOULD be a Scam! If Big Corporations are sponsoring the clicks, in order to LULL PEOPLE TO SLEEP... that would definitely NOT be a good thing!
I think few of us on Care2 have such an attitude! We click as only ONE of many things we do...

I also recommend people check out the Greater Good Network, and Global Girlfriend which is connected with it. Capitalism ain't gonna solve the problems it CREATES, either - you know that, Simon, and I know that - but, as long as you're gonna buy ANYthing, might as well make sure it's Fair-Traded and sweatshop-free, and HELPS women, families, children, farmers, refugees, etc. rather than exploits.....

Barbara Tomlinson (431)
Thursday May 23, 2013, 11:04 am
Tasunka: I go most days to a site "Click-to-Donate 70", which has a listing of many click-to-donate sites to go to.
I don't know if it's really anything like 70 - some sites go off-line, new ones appear, some listings don't work, some are duplicates; some sites have multiple click-to-donate opportunities. Many are in foreign languages; some are translated, some I understand the "target", some I don't {so I don't click on those}.
Some sites are selling stuff, some not. Some sites you listen to music to "click" - some you play a "game", often a quiz, with each correct answer counting as a "click".
Without doing the music ones or the "games" which take more time - it takes me about 45 minutes to go thru the ones I regularly click on! {As you said, Tasunka, you take an hour!} I have timed myself, but not counted how many clicks I do each time - as those keep changing. I have sortof a "list" I go thru....
It includes the Care2 click-to-donate sites.

I believe it is necessary to DO NO HARM, which goes along with assisting those in need.
_But_, for those who live in these dangerous areas, where tornadoes are prevalent, please MOVE, and don't rebuild.

Let's be realistic, 'altruism' is all but dead and gone.
Whatever the reasons for supporting those in need, better to have a self-serving reason, than none at all. Perhaps, the clicks on different websites are an indication to the advertisers, to see which websites have the most participation.

Gene Jacobson (284)
Thursday May 23, 2013, 11:44 am
Well, Charlene, I do believe the click sites do what they claim to and it isn't just because they are nice folks as Barbara points out they hope you'll support their businesses as well, if nothing else it is good advertising but with the added bonus of being able to do some real good for a few minutes of your time. Even on days when I do virtually nothing else, I visit the Hunger Site and Care to Click because those are all causes I care a great deal about.

To your other point, that is something I have never understood and still don't. And it costs those of us who do not choose to live in flood plains or on the coast or in traditional areas of real danger a fortune every year in disaster relief that could be spent on other things if people were more sensible. Just a couple for instances. We, here in Minnesota, have a goodly number of people who absolutely love living on river banks. Virtually every year, they are flooded out of their homes, countless hours go into disaster relief and mitigation. Many refuse buy out offers which government in the past decade has begun offering to move people out of harms way. I don't even think they can get flood insurance anymore. But every year in March we start talking about what river is going to crest at what height and what the damage will be. Completely unnecessary damage. We have people living along our coasts who are ravaged by hurricanes periodically, do they learn from that lesson nature gives so freely? No, we just spend billions rebuilding in the same place only to have everything destroyed all over again. I don't get how that is reasonable. Nor why the nation should pick up the cost for people who could help themselves by not building in danger zones but would rather rely on the largesse of the nation as a whole when trouble comes calling. As the climate change happening now continues and even accelerates, I've seen models that show as much as 2/3's of Florida under water, most of New York City as well, and all those lovely golf courses and resorts, well, gone. We should be planning for this, but we are playing ostrich with nature. The rise in sea level that is already happening and is certainly going to go as bad as most projections indicate because the world is STILL not doing a thing to mitigate that change, and many climatologists now think it too late to reverse, is not only going to take much of our coastal lands but is going to fuel ever larger, stronger storms, such as we have no measurement for yet. They used to be called "storm of the century" but they are coming in multiple events every year now and that is not going to slow, it is going to accelerate. And there is no leadership anywhere saying, move inland, where you are is too dangerous. We just keep repeating the carnage and the cleanup while the news media somberly, but gleefully, counts up the casualties and the money necessary to put everything back as it was only to be knocked down again. We can keep ignoring the message nature is sending us or we can ignore it until the seas and the storms force us to actually think about what we are doing and why. For now we just keep spending on rebuilding avoidable tragedies. Build on a river bank if you will but realize your neighbors who have built their houses on bedrock while you build on shifting sand will one day tire of paying for your view.

Gene and Charlene:
1] Pretty soon there will be almost NO SAFE SPACES LEFT.
Along the Seacoasts, rising Oceans; inland Riverbanks, weird rain patterns and Rivers rising; inland Dry Areas, Tornadoes and huge Dust Storms. Oh, and uncontrollable Wildfires.
2] If there are a FEW "safe" or "saFER" areas left, the population will be TOO BIG TO CROWD INTO THEM. Even if we all live in skyscrapers in huge Mega-cities! Where are all these millions of people moving out of "bad" areas to GO? And - what about the FARMLAND TO FEED THEM? Where is THAT supposed to happen? {The Oceans and Rivers will be polluted and depleted of Fish and other Life...}
And what little arable land is left for Farming, will be polluted by FRACKING, Mining and Oil Drilling... Herbicides, Pesticides, and Feed Lots... diminution of the Water Table...
Also, entire ISLANDS will be underwater - and where will THEIR populations go? To already-overcrowded areas, where there are ALREADY severe food shortages and lack of arable land? Oh, they'll be welcomed - NOT!
One thing will happen, the population will rapidly decline - but in the most painful ways possible - and Conflicts of all sorts will INCREASE...
Nope, Clicking and any sort of Relief is just a band-aid... but it's meaningful to those affected NOW...

Clicked for the victims. Tornados are so scary, even if they are just near by. But for me, that was close enough After moving to the "west coast" from the midwest I have experienced a few minor earthquakes. still not as scary as tornados. No one knows where a tornado is going to touch down, where it's going to go, how big it may get or what it's going to destroy.

Sorry, but I think it is time for "liberals" to get tough with the "right wing conservatives" For decades we liberals are always nicer and more compassionate. The wacky conservative takes advantage of this fact. Case in point....both Oklahoma Senators consistently vote NO! on Federal aid.NO! for NY< NJ< CONN>< MASS aid after devastation from Hurricane flooding.
It is time for Oklahomans to pay the price for consistently electing these two Senators.
Only when Oklahomans taste the effects of their political persuations is there any chance for change.

@ Charlene - "Let's be realistic, 'altruism' is all but dead and gone.".

Oh no it's not! I see it countless times daily, and it is cone of the few things in this world that let's me feel that Hope does indeed "spring eternal". ♥

@ Lawrence. .I agree the polititions of these states need a walk up call and a goid kick in the ass, but we cannot under any circumstance do it on the backs of those in need...

Hit then in their wallets and in the voting booth.
Otherwise we are sinking to their level, which is having to do chin ups to see the gutter.

Noted and Clicked. I also sent a Thank you message to the Soldiers on that Site. I too belong to Click to Donate and spend an hour everyday when I can get on because I live in Tornado Alley.I wish I could move like Richelle did. They are scary and so is my basement. I hope ASPCA is out there trying to help the animals. I'm putting a message in my Frog and Horse groups to go light Candles in my friend Dianne Lynn group Paw Prints for the Animals I know where lost.

Daily clicker here! I have many sites that I bookmarked just for clicking. The first thing I do when I get on the internet is do my daily clicks and have coffee. Then off to signing petitions. If I don't do my daily clicks, I would stress all day. It is a must do on the to do list! Never a waste of time.
I think this was a fantastic idea these people came up with for advertising! Free for us or purchase something if you choose. No pressure. It feels good to help any way we can, and I know that most people feel the same.
I am grateful for my Clicker friends :)

Thanks for your comment Simon..Not everyone on Care2 lives in the US so it is impossible for them to help with the relief effort by volunteering, donating money, goods&services to charities that are out there helping the victims. But when a disaster be it man-made or natural is beamed around the world - we have instant access to help these causes. Clicking to Donate is one way we can contribute - to help, to let others know that we are thinking of them in their time of need, to be constructive, doing not asking. Daily clickers support all sorts of causes including the environment - we are also petition signers and boycotters. Here in Australia we have a slogan "Act local - think Global" it's a good place to start because "from little things big things grow". As for taxes to pay for all this - have never heard any Government call a Corporation a tax payer - they reserve that title for you and me.

Noted and started clicking yesterday, but it seems I forgot to comment !!! Sad to see some negative opinions in these comments .... seems certain people need to have a rethink about what is important (or, at very least, keep their negativity to themselves) !!! Thanks to those who have explained how the clicking actually works - I'd often wondered. To the "doubters" I would say EVEN IF there was ONE chance in billions that this helps, I'd still do it !! Will be clicking daily for this, and other causes !!! Thanks for alerting me Patricia !!!

I click there daily already. I grew up close to Moore and missed being in the Joplin tornado 2 years ago by about 30 minutes. To the few who don't think they should be helped, perhaps one day you will survive an EF5 tornado and get a firsthand experience of what it is like. If you think the pictures on the news are bad, it is nothing compared to seeing it up close and personal.
