We support sustainable energy in Hawai‘i, but renewable energy projects that continue to destroy our natural beauty and desecrate our cultural heritage are not sustainable. A company called Big Wind is proposing to do just that by industrializing the north shore of Lāna‘i in order to provide cheap energy for O‘ahu. That's not sustainable energy. Please sign this petition to help Lāna‘i defend its unique natural and cultural resources and help O‘ahu find a truly sustainable source of energy.

BIG WIND POWER ON LĀNA‘I
WHAT IT MEANS FOR OUR LĀHUI,
OUR ‘ĀINA, AND OUR IWI KŪPUNA

Native Hawaiian traditional practices, cultural sites, and iwi kūpuna are in danger of vanishing forever on Lāna‘i, if the “Big Wind” project goes forward.

WHAT IS THE BIG WIND PROJECT?

-Wind power plants will be built on Lāna‘i and Moloka‘i to generate electricity for O‘ahu.
-The Lāna‘i wind project would place 100-200 wind turbines over ¼ of the island. It would cover the ahupua‘a of Ka‘ā.
-Each wind turbine will be 400 feet tall from the base to the tip. Its foundation would extend at least 10 feet below ground.
-Each wind turbine is about 3 school buses in width.
-Transmission lines between the turbines and converter stations must be built too.
-A cable, placed under the ocean, will carry the electricity from Lāna‘i to O‘ahu.

HOW WILL THE BIG WIND PROJECT HARM HAWAI‘I AND KĀNAKA MAOLI?

Our Traditional Way of Life
On Lāna‘i, kānaka maoli continue to fish and hunt in the Ka‘ā ahupua‘a. Ka‘ā contains the most acreage of shoreline out of the entire island. Access to the shoreline would be blocked by the wind power plant.

Our Cultural Sites
Ka‘ā is rich with cultural sites. The area contains an extensive amount of sites, including: ceremonial sites, ahu, petrogylphs, salt-making sites, residences, and stone walls.

Our Iwi Kūpuna
Extensive excavation will be done for the foundations of the turbines. The excavation and the mere presence of 400 foot towers will impact burials found some of which were discovered in Ka‘ā during a survey of the area last year.

The ahupua‘a of Ka‘a and Paoma‘i of Lāna‘i are rich in ancient Hawaiian burials, cultural sites and artifacts, natural resources, and legendary landscapes. They are also home to the longest shoreline on Lāna‘i, where people continue to fish and hunt for daily survival. These areas are so valuable that they are protected as a federal historic district, and a state conservation district.

Castle and Cooke proposes to generate electricity for Honolulu by destroying the ahupua‘a of Ka‘a and Paoma‘i with 170 towers that are each 40 stories tall and three school buses wide. If Big Wind is allowed to destroy this fragile and important ‘āina, Lāna‘i residents will no longer be able to hunt or fish, or maintain their spiritual connection with the land and ocean.

We, the undersigned, support Kūpa‘a no Lāna‘i in achieving its mission to protect, preserve and perpetuate Hawaiian values, culture and heritage of Lāna‘i through aloha and mālama ‘āina. To that end, we oppose the construction of a “big” wind power plant in the ahupua‘a of Ka‘a and Paoma‘i on the northend of Lāna‘i.

Signed. I do hope we can help save this beautiful country. Between the pineapples destroying the Orchids and other wildflowers, they do not need this.
