The Equal Rights Amendment was introduced to Congress 90 years ago. Even though a fierce battle for equality was fought during the 70's and early 80's, not enough states ratified the amendment. Therefore, there is nothing in the US Constitution that cements any women's rights, except the right to vote.

Remove the unauthorized deadlines placed on the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. Contact your representatives to co-sponsor HJR43 and SJR15

Thank you for the posting, Beverly.

It seems so strange that this amendment is still not ratified. It's rather absurd in this age of tiny steps forward and giant steps back (Stand Your Ground, Citizens United and other SCOTUS decisions, for instance). Wouldn't it be strange if the present membership of the US legislature managed to put this through? We must keep on keeping on, I guess. Of course I signed.

Signed, noted and commented - It's the 21st Century. Haven't we waited long enough to be equal?

Just Carole (341)

We ARE equal (or more) . . . but, unfortunately, we keep re-electing "representatives" who disregard us.

Reconsider the next time you vote!

Back in the late 1970s and early 1980s I had a pro-ERA bumpersticker on my car. I was on the receiving end of a lot of angry, hostile comments from other people, and my car was keyed. It was only after the deadline for ratification passed without the ERA being ratified that the hostility and anger towards my bumpersticker ended. The anti-ERA people probably figured they got their wish and the ERA was dead. I'd like to tell them that the ERA will never be dead as long as there's a chance to ratify it and it becomes part of the US Constitution.

Any man (or potential male representative) who does not dignify women with the same status as a man, has NO BUSINESS pretending to support females.

Liars should be immediately expunged from the list!

Signed of course.

I think we did better with this before the Internet. In the 1970's we pushed and managed to get all but three of the needed 38 states. We should be pushing this forward to demand that all remaining states sign.

Cannot believe that I'm posting this in several groups on fb. All you women out there, we need to step it up and fight. Fight for equal rights for every human. Need more rights for animals too. Recruit some voters this year. Teach them what you know. I have several college employees who are beginning to listen!

The ERA was written in 1923 by Alice Paul, suffragist leader and founder of the National Woman's Party. She and the NWP considered the ERA to be the next necessary step after the 19th Amendment (affirming women's right to vote) in guaranteeing "equal justice under law" to all citizens.

The ERA was introduced into every session of Congress between 1923 and 1972, when it was passed and sent to the states for ratification. The seven-year time limit in the ERA's proposing clause was extended by Congress to June 30, 1982, but at the deadline, the ERA had been ratified by 35 states, leaving it three states short of the 38 required for ratification. It has been reintroduced into every Congress since that time but is still not part of our constitution. I say it's high time it was!
