The traditional presumption in the law—from the advent of the Hebrew Bible through the creation of Roman law, English common law, and American law—has been that if you could spare human life, it was incumbent upon you to do so.

With “Stand Your Ground” (aka “Shoot First”) laws, the National Rifle Association (NRA) and its partners in the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) have turned 3,000 years of jurisprudence on its head. Now you can provoke a fight, and if losing that fight, kill the person you attacked.

The NRA’s laws represent a dangerous and unprecedented escalation in the use of force in the public space, allowing individuals to kill when they merely fear “great bodily harm” (i.e., a fistfight, shoving match, etc.). The concept of responding with proportional force has been obliterated. Additionally, “Stand Your Ground” laws remove the duty to retreat from a conflict in public, allowing individuals to shoot and kill even when they could otherwise walk away safely from an altercation.

Tell Your State Legislators:
"Stand Your Ground" laws represent a dangerous and unprecedented escalation in the use of force in the public space, allowing individuals to shoot and kill even when they could otherwise walk away safely from an altercation. Oppose this immoral legislation.

Our politicians, intimidated by the political power of the National Rifle Association, have for too long refused to act to prevent gun-related tragedies.

The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence is a 501(c)(4) organization with a three-part strategy to break this gridlock:

1.Our message to elected officials is simple: The era of no accountability is over! If you do the NRA’s bidding and put our loved ones in the line of fire, we will educate your constituents about your record. This strategy involves the use of hard-hitting TV, radio, print and online ads.
2.We are building personal relationships with legislators and challenging them to become dedicated, long-term advocates for sensible gun laws. The victims and survivors of gun violence on our staff are leaders in this lobbying effort.
3.We are the first gun violence prevention group to talk about the issue in terms of democratic values, and to use the term “insurrectionism” to describe the NRA’s treasonous interpretation of the Second Amendment. By turning the NRA’s “freedom” message against them, we are reframing the debate and putting them on the defensive.

Thank you standing up to "Stand Your Ground" laws! Please contribute to help fund this campaign and others like it! We all have a right to live in an America free from gun violence. -- Thanks Beverly.

We must find a way to bring some sanity of all of this. People can be responsible gun owners without also catering to the whims of the gun manufacturing lobby.

Stand Your Ground only encourages vigilantism and seems more like an unfortunate relic of the wild west homesteading days.

Stand Your Ground amounts to nothing less than a license to kill, a good-for-all-seasons hunting permit without limitations.

Very gladly signed. Noted. Many thanks, Beverly!
Seems like not too many years ago, "stand your ground" was limited to confronting an intruder inside of your own home....which made sense. Expanding it, the way so many states have done, is just insane.

Keep ion mind, the NRA is a lobbying group, totally beholden to the CORPORATE interests that fund it...and then imagine how many guns they have sold over the last few years of publicity the NRA has created. Each time a hint comes from the president, new boosts in gun sales go through the roof!
These people do not give a damn about the 2nd Amendment...beyond its ability to make them money. They prey on the sheep who are so insistent that "Ain't nobody gonna tell me what to do!"

Stand Your Ground laws essentially enable people to legally kill anyone they don't want to be allowed to continue to live--that's what it boils down to. Oh, they'll claim they "felt threatened" or "couldn't see properly"--but the truth is that they just didn't want the other person to remain alive.

Could there be a simple mistake? Sure. But not by someone who changes his story again and again, or--I can't talk about this; it always gets me angry.
