Stop the celebration of Christopher Columbus as a national holiday. Instead, let's observe the struggles of the indigenous people of our nation.

Christopher Columbus should not be celebrated as a national hero. We are doing the indigenous people of our nation an injustice by observing this holiday as is.

QUESTION - By the word "indigenous" do you meen the NATIVE AMERICANS or the rest of us ? If you meen the Native Americans then I agree , if not then leave it alone .

The man that struggling just to bring us some slightly fair access to health care, that wants to help to preserve and increase the needed minimum wage, and equal pay for all, this man that is so hated is also the man that is to take on Columbus day?

Slowly people are learning the facts. Teachers do not teach that this man discovered a land that was already there. Nor was he the first to find this land. We have learned so much about the origins of human discoveries that Columbus day will wither as truth spreads. He made his voyage at a time when there was an invention that secured his place in history --- the printing press. Let's not ask the impossible of a man that is fighting everyday for you and your rights. Let's ask instead that he turn and fight for the rights and due diligence that we owe to the people that were here thousands of years before the arrival of the Europeans.

OMG....let us stop nitpicking. The man was a mass murderer. I don't care who removes this Disgraceful National so called Holiday. Get it GONE! I have already signed.

Columbus’ Men Used Native People as Dog Food

In the early years of Columbus’ conquests there were butcher shops throughout the Caribbean where Indian bodies were sold as dog food. There was also a practice known as the montería infernal, the infernal chase, or manhunt, in which Indians were hunted by war-dogs.

These dogs—who also wore armor and had been fed human flesh, were a fierce match for the Indians. Live babies were also fed to these war dogs as sport, sometimes in front of horrified parents.

The above was just a small writing of what Columbus and his men did. That this so called FARCE of a so called honor or a Federal Holiday exists is a blight upon us as an entire Nation.

Columbus Day was conceived by the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic Fraternal organization, in the 1930s because they wanted a Catholic hero. After President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the day into law as a federal holiday in 1937, the rest has been history.

I'm sure with hindsight we can all realize this was a mistake to have this man be anyone to give a National Holiday for. No excuses, get this gone off the calenders and they are still teaching it in schools, every year I have had to counter this crap of a teaching my children and now my Grandchild receives.

This is a DISGRACE!

Sorry, Dandelion I don't see Obama as a mass murdered. Just a president deeply embroiled in attempting to get is out of two wars and avoid more. And a few other things are his plate, health care, equal rights, equal pay, restoration of the right vote, just a few minor things.

I did sign the petition but I would much prefer we focus on the real things that need to be done for the Native Americans both here and in Canada. To much has been ignored for too long.

Sorry, Kit, I don't see where Dandelion said Pres. Obama is a mass murderer.

Monday October 14, 2013, 2:15 pm

Me too, Patrick. I am guilty of reading through to quickly. (Sorry about that Dandelion) When you bring a group of people on a voyage of discovery, too often the sailors that volunteered were from the very scrapings of the bottom of life.

Four thousands years before Columbus the Chinese circumnavigated and mapped the globe. Are we too assume their maps of North America were just a hunch?

I still believe we need to focus on the real issues, the things that are not happening to support and build stronger and healthier communities for the Native Americans.

This stupid holiday serves no purpose. Columbus and his gang did not really discover the New World. Technically, the ones who discovered it were the ancestors of the First Nations/Native Americans.

Dandelion G. (386)

This is a REAL issue to many people, to the native people of this Country it is VERY REAL. It is a yearly slap in the face, a constant reminder that the majority of the people still don't have a clue to how REAL IT IS. It is telling many people that you do not matter and showing no respect at all to them and their human dignity.

And it isn't only to the original inhabitants but to the people that were brought over here as slaves. Due to the influx of gold by Christopher Columbus this disrupted the global economy to the point that African slaves became a dominant commodity. One would think that as President Obama's heritage as our first African American President, that he'd be more than eager to correct this issue.

That we place this horrible man, Columbus, on our calenders and teach this LIE to the children, generation after generation to me is very REAL. It isn't the only lie taught, but it sets the stage to continue lies. Lies to wars, lies to keep a public quiet on other issues. If we can't stand up to this BOLD FACE LIE, where are we going to stand up? It is a real issue, it is symptomatic of why we keep being lied to and why people don't wake up to it.

Most other Countries are taught the truth about Christopher Columbus, we are a laughing stock to the world keeping a Murderer on our calenders and honoring him. Apology accepted and thanks Patrick for pointing out what I had said.

Giana, you are correct, all the explorers left a trail of tears for many but we only have Christopher Columbus as a NATIONAL holiday. You are so right, he didn't even step foot on the mainland of the USA, so to say he even had so called "discovered" this land is also a lie. But he did kill many people where he did land, he was worse than a lot of the explorers, so we don't need to be celebrating him. Keep the historical record accurate.

Why do I feel that Columbus Day has been transformed from a holiday into an occasion for weeping, wailing, rending of garments and gnashing of teeth by the Left? Seriously, the world would have been better off with 2 Africa's?

Dandelion G. (386)
Wednesday October 16, 2013, 7:11 am
???? John you so missed the point. But if I'm wrong correct me, but you seem to have some sort of a problem with people that are dark skinned? Do you know it was Christopher Columbus that started the slave trade that brought the African slaves to the shores of North America. So if that is your premise I would think you also are not in wanting to honor this man who darkened North America.

Perhaps John, if colonialism hadn't destroyed who communities and countries in Africa with the exploitation and the theft of their resources, had treated them as equals and paid them fairly for their labor and resources then Africa would be on a far better footing than it is today. I'm sorry but your logic is embedded with ongoing propaganda that somehow being of a certain race or coming from a certain place is superior and smacks of arrogance.

Dandelion didn't say Obama was a mass murderer, but I will say it. His drone strike program has killed over 800 civilians, hundreds of them children to get rid of maybe 20 terrorist and that is not counting his excallation of war in the middle east and expanding the wars into Egypt, Lybia, Syria, etc etc while supplying terrorist with weapons to overthrow legitimate governments for the sake of oil and profits. I don't think we should have columbus day as a holiday either. But all of our history is rife with mistakes and glorification of war and glossing over embarassing truths.

Barry T, Dandelion and Jamie were spot on..
For whatever reason, those from Europe (whites) think they are superior and can do what ever the hell they want. Im Sicilian and am horrified at what the Romans did for example. Look what they did to Jesus! and during the dark ages...look what the white settlers did to EVERY GROUP THEY ENCOUNTERED and look at what they are STILL DOING all over the planet. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Natives all over the world are getting screwed and its disgusting.
Columbus didnt discover anything...the Natives were already here
and what about the guy America is named after? Amerigo Vespucci?
