Amira Osman Hamed faces trial in November for the outrageous charge of "indecent dress" and could face up to 40 lashes if convicted. Flogging affects a wide range of people in Sudan, particularly women, for acts seen as immoral in public and sometimes in private. It is not only wrong but can lead to long-term psychological and physical scars.

Stand with Amira and other women in Sudan who are at risk of being flogged for what is seen as immoral behavior. Send an urgent message to Sudanese Minister of Justice and ask him to drop the charges and abolish flogging.

On Monday, Amira Osman Hamed, a 35-year-old Sudanese civil engineer and women's rights activist was charged with dressing indecently or immorally for refusing to cover her hair with a headscarf. If found guilty, she could be sentenced to corporal punishment of up to 40 lashes.

Following Monday's hearing, Ms. Osman Hamed remains in legal limbo while the prosecution decides if additional hearings will take place or if the case will be dismissed.

40 lashes for not wearing a headscarf! Pitiful excuse for flogging women.
This case and others like it should be dropped for all time, permanently.

Education brings power, and a desire for freedom. Flogging has also led to death. These women need education so they can organize for freedom and equality. That will not be an easy fight but it never is easy. I find this to be despicable. In the year 2013, people are still using religious mandates as an excuse to cause harm. Yes, of course I signed, and will sign anything to help the women caught in this web of inadequate men, exerting power over women that have no voice.

I do think the International community needs to put pressure on the countries still treating women as chattel property. These impotent men need a lesson in reality.

Indecent and immoral are subjective notions/ideas that exist in the mind of the person who watches.

IF someone finds something indecent/immoral, (s)he can (should?) turn his eyes away.

More down to earth end less philosophical: yet another example of a male-dominated society that wants to keep the women oppressed.

Signed, of course!

Thanks for posting Beverly!

I have spoken to women in hijabs and the burka here in Australia- their male relatives and husbands make them wear these hot, unhealthy garments otherwise they cannot go out or remove hijabs even if their scalp is covered with contact dermatitis. Wearing these outfits narrows a woman's chances of employment and is causing lifelong health problems, like rickets and osteoporosis. I'm sick of hearing so-called feminists bleating about 'freedom to choose' and when tackled about female genital mutilation dismiss it as a 'custom' or 'complicated'- it's oppression and child abuse- nothing more, nothing less. I'm really angry with organisations like AI and the UN cherry picking egregious foreign cases such as this, ignoring the abuses that females suffer in the developed world. .

And where is the United Nations? Are we so ''politically correct'' that we can't stand up for a woman whose only ''crime'' is going out in public with her hair uncovered? MEN do it, don't they?

Oh...right.....that's DIFFERENT!

Disgusted but not surprised. Everyday we seem to hear about another example of inhumanity or abuse by the followers of radical Islam.
I've signed the Amnesty letter but am not optimistic it's going to have the slightest impact on these neanderthal misogynists.
As far as education is concerned they don't even want their wives and daughters to go to school. Very sad.

It appears we have insecure men everywhere, under one condition or another.

We can be grateful for many of the secure male persons on Care2.
How can we clone them?
