As of April 1, French women no longer have to pay to have an abortion. Birth control is also free for minors. What's even better is that 1/3 of France isn't screaming that women who have abortions are sluts and accusing them of being sexual freeloaders.

France is leading the way in women’s reproductive rights.
As of April 1, French women no longer have to pay to have an abortion.
Birth control is also free for minors.
What’s even better is that 1/3 of France isn’t screaming that women who have abortions are sluts and accusing them of being sexual freeloaders. France isn’t perfect, but they surpass United States when it comes to reproductive rights for women.

The Minister of Health, Marisol Touraine, explained, when the bill passed in October it was a “public health choice” and she aptly explained that abortion is “never a trivial act” for women.

This 2002 report breaks down the teen pregnancy rate among five developed countries. The United States ranks the highest.

Adolescent childbearing is more common in the United States (22% of women reported having had a child before age 20) than in Great Britain (15%), Canada (11%), France (6%) and Sweden (4%); differences are even greater for births to younger teenagers. A lower proportion of teenage pregnancies are resolved through abortion in the United States than in the other countries; however, because of their high pregnancy rate, U.S. teenagers have the highest abortion rate. The age of sexual debut varies little across countries, yet American teenagers are the most likely to have multiple partners. A greater proportion of U.S. women reported no contraceptive use at either first or recent intercourse (25% and 20%, respectively) than reported nonuse in France (11% and 12%, respectively), Great Britain (21% and 4%, respectively) and Sweden (22% and 7%, respectively).

Free birth control reduces abortions by more than half. Hear that Tea Party? You’re anti-abortion. We get it. Here is a way to REDUCE abortions, but is that really your goal, or are you just looking to take choice away from women in order to control them?

As of April 1 the French state will reimburse 100 percent of the cost of abortions while teenage girls will be offered free and anonymous contraception.

The French state will reimburse 100 percent of the cost of abortions beginning April 1, while girls aged between 15 and 18 will be offered access to free and anonymous birth control.

The change comes as a law approved in late 2012 comes into force.

Until now, French women over 18 could only receive up to 80 percent of the cost of the procedure, which can run up to 450 euros.

There are around 12,000 such procedures a year in France.

The move to full reimbursement, which was one of French President François Hollande’s 2012 campaign promises and is part of the 2013 social security budget, is designed to improve women’s access to abortions.

And by coupling it with free contraception for younger girls and women, France hopes to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies, and thus the number of abortions.

I wish this would happen in the U.S.; but the religious right keeps trying to cram their religion and their agenda down everyone's throat at the same time they scream that all should be free...what a bunch of hypocrites!

$$$ spent on providing contraception is probably the most efficient environmental investment, too.
Ought to be done worldwide, since yesterday !

I absolutely agree with you, Frack.
Exactly those people who can LEAST afford Birth Control and Abortion, need it the MOST.

It is the ONLY thing that can help this Planet.
ALL other good things that we try to do, go DOWN THE DRAIN because of OVER-POPULATION.
Conserving, Recycling, Replanting, Helping Animals - all for nothing, with the needs - just the most BASIC needs, forget a "decent" lifestyle - of another BILLION human beings!
Who will only live and die in complete misery and squalor -
Oh, if governments were only RATIONAL!
