Airline passengers create 881 million pounds of waste per year (half of it in-flight), and much of it is not recycled. In What Goes Up Must Come Down, The Sorry State of Recycling in the Airline Industry, Green America ranks 11 major airlines on their re

One airlines encourages me to use my water bottle and the other hands me a plastic cup while I hold
out my water bottle. They're both co-partners and code-share each other's flights. They need to be more
consistent and streamlne their information to each other if they want to send out a positive message to
the flying public.

Another example of the corporate waste that may be found in many industries who are quick to cry poverty.

I have traveled a lot in the last few months and noticed the speed at which they provide service and clean up. Each time they go up the aisles they carry another new "garbage" bag to collect the cups and such and then on longer flights they offer more drinks with new cup each time. At the end of the flight, they quickly get the "garbage" bags off the plane because their shift is complete. I am sure their isn't a sorter at the end of that fight just waiting to separate the "garbage" from the recycles.

A good place for community service. Let People doing community service sort through for recycling.

This has been a pet peeve of mine forever. I have to fly frequently and detest all the plastic containers wrapped in more plastic. This is definitely a problem.

It's a pet peeve of MINE, too, Iris! If you ask them, they'll tell you that "someone" sorts it all out...but I don't believe a word of it.

I've been thinking about this a lot as well, Iris and Pam. I always re-use the first cup they give me, even on long flights, despite the odd look I get from airline personnel. It's unbelievable the quantity of recyclable items that goes in the trash every time we fly.
Thank you fro the link to the petition.

That is a lot of waste. I see the letter to airlines says "The airline industry as a whole generates 880 million tons of waste annually from US airline passengers, with half of this coming from in-flight waste. While 75 percent of this waste is recyclable, only about 20 percent ever is recycled."

I think it is probably 880 million pounds, still a large amount. I have signed and posted a link to this petition on the Recycle and Reuse group here on Care2. I encourage people to join the group at its main page: http://www.care2.com/c2c/group/reuserecycle .

NOTED & SIGNED! Here in Minneapolis, Minnesota we have been flim-flammed for years by Northwest Airlines - now Delta & more of the same. The "Homeland Heroes" running Airline 'Security' [sic!] plus the profiteers running the airlines themselves have already turned air travel here into a totally unpleasant, sickening [literally] torturous disaster [literally, again]. THE MONEY IS THERE TO CHANGE THINGS RADICALLY - IT'S JUST BEING SUCKED UP BY THE SH*TES AT THE TOP: CRAPITALISM AT "WORK." Crapitalism is what I choose to call this USA System: capital/wealth for the totally filthy stinking rich - crap/sh*te/crapola for all the rest of us.
WE DESERVE BETTER - AND OUR CHILDREN PARTICULARLY DO TOO.
