A new study will make it hard for Monsanto, Dow, and DuPont to argue that they aren’t simply desirous of eliminating all of nature, and then – us. A detailed analysis of species diversity – more plants, animals, and insects – is included in the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and Oxford University’s report published in the Journal of Applied Ecology, looking at data from 94 previous studies covering 184 farm sites dating back to 1989. It shows how organic farms support life on planet Earth, and how GMO farms do not.

That’s no haphazard report. It covers lots of acreage and goes back 25 years. This very same report proves that this increase of biodiversity is stable over 30 years on organic farms, as compared to conventional ones. Is this really any surprise though, to anyone who has been paying attention to what neonicotinoids do to pollinators, and what Bt toxins do to farm animals and people?

Sean Tuck of Oxford University’s Department of Plant Sciences, and lead author of the study said:

“Our study has shown that organic farming, as an alternative to conventional farming, can yield significant long-term benefits for biodiversity. Organic methods could go some way towards halting the continued loss of diversity in industrialized nations.”

The study only looked at ‘species richness’ and in some cases pollinator colonies were a whole 50% higher on organic farms compared to GMO, pesticide-laden ones.

Mr. Tuck explains:

“Species richness tells us how many different species there are but does not say anything about the total number of organisms. . .There are many ways to study biodiversity and species richness is easy to measure, providing a useful starting point. Broadly speaking, high species richness usually indicates a variety of species with different functions. Taking the example of bees, species richness would tell us how many different species of bee were on each farm but not the total number of bees.”

“Satellite imagery was used to help conduct the study, to estimate land use around farms to also analyze how this affected species diversity. Scientists who conducted the study found that organic farms in intensely farmed regions instead of ‘island’ farms had better biodiversity as well. These farms, “provide rich habitats in a sea of pesticide-covered conventional fields. This effect was weakest in pollinators, which may be because pollinators are likely to visit neighbosring farms and could be affected by pesticides there.”

There was an average gain in species richness varying between 26% and 43%. This variation could be down to a number of factors relating to regional variation in farming practices and definitions of ‘organic’.

There you go Monsanto, now tell us what you are really up to.

Insects and viruses, and even weeds in crops are a direct result of having no biodiversity where they are planted. We weren't meant to live on this planet by growing huge crops of nearly all the same kinds of foods. It just isn't sustainable, and it isn't healthy for us or the planet.

Long live organic farmers and family-style farms! I need to get to my local farmer's market as soon as possible. I have never been disappointed with anything that I got at such a marketplace.

Worthy information that we should ensure our representatives and policy-makers receive.

Well I'm an old timer at activism, nearly 50 yrs berrating stone walls :) The power of the people exploded with this technology. Letters seldom got a response anywhere approaching the subjects at hand..:) An interesting phone call to Revenue Canada, Dept of finance, I spoke with an agent about the birth certificate as a stock or financial vehicle, he confirmed it is, and that it was worth about 200000 clams nearly 25 years ago, later estimates put us at about 15 M every Canadian, A trust account with RC holds the loot and the MP's and MLA's share the money for their constituents, technically :)
He advised me that even though the process is difficult, it is not impossible. I suggest a trust company to handle your affairs. Some pioneers of the movement have done some serious jail time gaining knowledge of how the corruption works..Paul Martin Lied on national tv about that birth certificate / strawman scam, and that is treason..yet they walk the streets free..the entire parliament is corrupted upon arrival..or go now where.
We have a prepaid inheritance that is being stolen. I am ashamed that CAnadians are so cradle to grave dimiinished in awareness of who they are and what they are, in many aspects, spiritual as well..so..being a sucker for punishment i jump off the cliff of truth and hope to land safely.:)
Across the common wealth this scam runs, other countries have picked it up too..so..be aware..things of politics are never what they seem to be to us, the herd financing their lavish life styles..with the help of our deceptively clever champions.:) When the europeans stole our style of governance, along with our style of religion, they left out very important parts of those treasures.
Bankers and politicians get together and we are screwed..:)
400 years now they have been stealing from us .:)
That really pisses me off :0)
Great victory for our side..here..GMO is NO GO..!
Organic permaculture, aquaculture rv park and small service industries. Arts, gifts, organic produce, fruit, eggs, milk, etc..Green houses, Grey water, the works, 300 ft drop in terrain from a nice clcear spring on the corner of my property..3 more across the face with timber. Gravity feed hydro generator @ 650 volts on demand 24/7 or into storage batteries and a converter..set generate off a meter.solar, wind, earth energy. Retirement is nothing but work and money laid down.
Love i though..the excitment and anticipation of another summer doing the labors of love.. ahhh...perfection..if it doesn't rain all summer again..:)

Agreed, Deb E.

GMO is unnatural, it spreads the seeds of Monsanto's destruction far and wide. Fifty years from now with ll the cross contamination of organic fields, will there even be any natural plant life left?

I am Canadian and I have no idea what Will L is going on about with birth certificates. Paul Martin hasn't been around for a long time, we are stuck with Prime Minister Hapless Harper, a con-servative who is in favour of large corporations even more than Martin was.

More people need to start buying organic products and put these people out of business. Support organic and local family farms.

There is NO way I would go Organic, it lowers yields by 50% and non gmo lowers yields by 25%. Spent enough years growing Non GMO and GMO to learn that. Only Wheat is Non GMO. So, we either have GMO, use less chemicals or ones that use NON GMO use more due to having to spray more often to rid fields of weeds which rob yield, insects that also rob yield. If the world was organic, grocery prices would be easily tripled, non gmo we would be sitting at around 50% higher.
