Stop Jailing Children for School Absences - ForceChange

US Politics & Gov't  (tags: truancy laws, children )

In the old days, if a student was tardy or had an unexcused absence, he or she would be punished by detention and writing lines on the chalkboard. The situation is radically different in the present. Texas punishes these "crimes" with fines and even jail.

"This system is somewhat like killing a fly with a hammer. No one argues that missing or being late to school is a good thing, but if children learn from such a delicate age that they can be cruelly punished for something they may have no control over, they will lose faith in adults who are supposed to protect them."

Total InsaniTea in my opinion. Look at the cost of all enforcement officers time/special court/lawyers/incarceration cost and on and on.

A 'cash cow' for all involved except the students and their families. States/Federal government pay the private contractors for their services, lawyers and court make bucks and ..well there ya go...Texasss,... where they are Jailing Kids for Dollars ....while the states most serious long term repeat offenders / criminals, their Reichwing politicans, 'run free', so to say....
