The practice of female genital mutilation is gradually declining, according to a report issued this week by the United Nation's Children's Fund (UNICEF). Younger women are less likely to have undergone the procedure than women in previous generations.

...if as an adult..who understands ones own needs and preferences then one decides to have ones hoohoo chopped up..then ok..odd..but ok...but its this awful trait of humans to force others...to force children..to force women..even to force men to take onboard traits and beliefs...Such wrong thinking in this world...Such wrong doing in this world...and for all the evils of tv and internet...thank God for it..to be able to send and show messages to others trapped in terribleness that there is another way...and a way out...and to teach that its really ok to have a mind of ones own..such as that is..in this crazy human hive..x

> Is the End in Sight for Genital Mutilation?
- I, for one don't think so, although it's long, long overdue.
But, what with the general stupidification of humankind, (religious)fundamentalism still around (and even on the rise in some spots) in what we call the 21st century etc etc i guess extinction of humankind comes before we get rid of embarrassing cruelties like that.

UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
Article 24
3. States Parties shall take all effective and appropriate measures with a view to abolishing traditional practices prejudicial to the health of children. (which, of course, applies to children of either sex)

NO, even that NOT OK at all. For this would still require someone (maybe even a surgeon who is bound by a certain oath) to commit said atrocity...
Obviously that adult would be in (dire) need of support like psychotherapy ...

Unless these people realize that sex is also for a woman's pleasure nothing will change.I worked with a mutilated Somali girl. She said that men in her country think that if a woman is mutilated she will not sleep around as she gets no pleasure.
By the way you can have your girl mutilated here in England for money. You just need to know where to go to and be prepared to pay.

Sorry to say, these reassuring words are not based on fact . Even some educated families that have come from primitive societies to 1st world countries are having their daughters mutilated. It is a disgusting and cruel practice that causes lifelong pain, both mental and physical. What a perversion!

Sounds nice, but generational brainwashing takes a long time to overcome.

After noting and signing a post, yesterday, about" ljtihad: Feminism and Reform" in the Muslim world, I spent some 50 minutes watching the related videos on utube. This was a 3 part compilation, called, i believe,"Nine Progressive Muslims Speak Out," and included some discussion of a discreet movement to stop FGM,.
One VERY interesting point that was raised therein, is that FGM is not a practice of Islam, but one related only to some of the cultures that became Muslim as a part of their history, and presumably engaged in FGM prior to that.

I don't or never really did know what the purpose of such a horrible thing. They are sick and should be done the same way. What goes around comes around.

I would hope so but it is still going to be one long and agonizing battle to end this horror everywhere on the planet.

Can't believe it's declining worldwide - I saw video where Middle Eastern religious leader spoke of reviving the practice "to keep our women pure. The woman has no need to wander." "...no need to enjoy."

Does that sound like modern to anyone here?? Didn't think so.

This is a very sad practice that needs to end! Mutilation should not be allowed for any reason, religious or otherwise.
The beliefs on this are asinine.

I really hope there's an end for this suffering.

The only change can come from within.
"In Burkina Faso, for example, there is leadership from the government, which openly acknowledges that it is a women's rights and a children's rights issue. They are trying to address it from different angles, one that incorporates education, protection measures, and also prosecution."
This is the way change will come, which means it'll take that much longer in North-African countries which abide by strict Muslim codes.

It's not an hoo-hoo it's a vagina and the mutilation is most often done by other women who believe they must do this to their daughters (family members) and only education can eradicate this abominable practice.

The practice usually refers to removal of the clitoris (clitoridectomy) and clitoral hood. Type II (excision) is removal of the clitoris and inner labia. Type III (infibulation) involves the removal of all or part of the inner and outer labia, and usually the clitoris, and the fusion of the wound; a small hole is left for the passage of urine and menstrual blood, and the wound is opened for intercourse and childbirth.

The health consequences of FGM can include recurrent urinary and vaginal infections, chronic pain, infertility, fatal hemorrhaging, epidermoid cysts, and complications during childbirth.

Why would a woman call her body part a hoo-hoo? Every part of a body has a correct name.

This is a practice that is very long overdue to stop. It seems it has more to do with the men controlling the women again. Deplorable.

Free will? Something that is DONE to children is not free will, the child has no choice. This is far too important an issue for stupid remarks.

Shocking practice .... MUST BE STOPPED . Any child found to have had this proceedure done to them in any country then the parents should be deemed to have ABUSED the child and suffer the consequences of abusers. IT IS ABUSE .... NOTHING SHORT OF ABUSE.
