BBC bans aid to Gaza
"Convoy needed more than ever" - George Galloway
The BBC has pulled the plug on a television appeal by 13 charities for Gaza. The ban on the aid advert by the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) comes as United Nations Secretary General Ban ki-moon visited Gaza to witness the appalling devastation. He said of the UN compound destroyed by Israel:
"I am just appalled. I am not able to describe how I am feeling. This was an outrageous and totally unacceptable attack against the United Nations."
George Galloway, who is organising an aid convoy to Gaza leaving London on St Valentine’s Day, 14 February, says:
“This is a sickening decision by the BBC. When it said no, all the other broadcasters pulled the plug on the ad as well, according to some obscure ‘convention’. The BBC has already drawn international opprobrium for its unremittingly pro-Israel bias during the assault on Gaza. Now it is stymieing relief efforts. Three immediate responses are called for:
“The BBC must be subjected to a wave of protest over this inhuman decision. If public opinion mobilised over lewd broadcasting by Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand then surely it can over this far graver failure to serve the public.
“The other broadcasters, who have no problem with the appeal, should be persuaded to transmit it anyway. Conventions are not binding with the force of law. If the BBC has in effect broken it, why should others feel bound?
“Everyone who supports the Palestinians people in Gaza should step up their aid, activities and political solidarity. The convoy I am helping to organise to Gaza, leaving London on 14 February, St Valentine’s Day, takes on even more importance. Support it. Collect for it. Send a vehicle laden with aid on it. The convoy is designed to break both the material and the media blockade on Gaza.
“Let’s answer the BBC’s disgraceful action – taken at public expense, thanks to our licence fees – with a massive convoy of material aid and political support for the Palestinians.”

This action by the BBC is outrageous. I really don't care if Hamas is to blame or if Israel is. The important fact is that the Gaza strip is in ruins and the innocent are suffering. Surely humanitarian concerns should outweigh political finger pointing!

When Israel stops its military terrorism, war crimes and other oppression against the people of Palestine, and when Israel agrees to the 2-state solution, including the right for the millions of Palestinian refugees to return, then there will be a lasting peace.

When the USA stops supporting Israel (e.g. ends the annual $3 billion military aid to Israel), then Israel will be forced to end its aggressive, expansionist and genocidal policies.

Yes thats what i believe too,mr.Simon Wood, when Israel stops getting weapons and money from the usa, then things will change
if people come with bare hands to the negociations and the will to make peace(this is the first decision to take)then there is hope of real and lasting peace
I'm outraged too about the bbc refusing to appeal for aid for Gazai cant understand why :(i thought the bbc was a generous community!

Convoy update: 24th January 2009

Enormous pressure on BBC
Gaza worse than Darfur
They already know we are coming

The International Committee of the Red Cross has declared the humanitarian crisis in Gaza to be worse than Darfur.

Hatem Shurrab, an aid worker in Gaza, says:
"It is only now that we can assess the real damage to Gaza, as all areas are now accessible.
"The UN has said it will cost billions to rebuild Gaza.
"This is something that aid agencies alone cannot do.
"We need to meet the immediate needs of people, to provide them with food, water, shelter, medicine and blankets."
It is at just this time that the BBC is refusing to broadcast an appeal for aid by the 13-strong group of charities that makes up Disasters Emergency Relief. Hunge numbers of people have called the BBC to complain and we urge you to do so on 03700 100 222. So outrageous is the BBC's position that even government ministers are calling on them to reconsider. Pressure now can make a difference - Tony Benn, George Galloway and others were to hand in a letter and lead a protest at the BBC organised by the Stop the War Coalition today.
The BBC's ban on aid tells us everything about the massacre of the Palestinians people in Gaza. It is not some natural disaster. It is politically driven mass murder.
That's why the convoy has two purposes. First to contribute to the aid effort that the BBC among others is trying to block. But secondly, it is to smash the propaganda blockade of Gaza. It is to raise the banner from London to Egypt of freedom for the Palestinian people. We want to create the permanent political pressure needed in Britain to shake the establishment from its pro-Israel bias.
People in Gaza understand that and are telling us so as they hear of our undertaking. Please help make it a success.
We now have 21 confirmed vehicles and help coming in from as far afield as Australia and Florida

Not what is happening in Gaza, is the first in the register of the crimes the Zionist entity for decades, is replete with crimes, the crimes have continued to generate even before Hamas, and even before the control of the Gaza Strip and that there will be rockets and that there would be martyrdom operations.(not Suicide operations) But the ferocious attack and has continued the pace at which the Zionist and the mechanisms of the American arsenal and the killing of innocent people, without distinction of the resistance, and imposed a blockade with no regards to any humanitarian situation that will result from this unfair blockade,
this massacre is not the first and will not be the last one, the only thing we can do as a human is to boycott all their products this is the simplest thing at the moments because if we wait for our governoments to do something, more honest people and chlidren will be killed.
