Tens of Thousands Cross Downed Gaza Wall
Tens of Thousands of Palestinians Flood Into Egypt Through Breached Gaza Wall
Palestinians cross the border into Egypt after militants exploded the separated wall between Gaza Strip and Egypt, in Rafah, southern Gaza Strip, Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008. Masked Palestinian gunmen breached the Gaza-Egypt border wall Wednesday, and thousands of Gazans trapped in their territory by a tight blockade poured into Egypt to buy food, fuel and other supplies that have become scarce. Egyptian border guards and Hamas police took no action as Palestinians hurried over the border and began returning with bags of food, boxes of cigarettes and plastic bottles of fuel. Share Tens of thousands of Palestinians poured from the Gaza Strip into Egypt Wednesday after masked gunmen with explosives destroyed most of the seven-mile wall dividing the border town of Rafah.

Gazans crossed on foot, in cars or in donkey carts to buy cigarettes, fuel, and other items made scarce by an Israeli blockade of their impoverished territory. Across the coastal strip, home to 1.5 million Palestinians, people pushed into buses and piled into rickety pickup trucks heading to Egypt and a rare opportunity to escape months of isolation.

"Freedom is good. We need no border after today," said unemployed 29-year-old Mohammed Abu Ghazal.

Hamas did not take responsibility for knocking down the border wall erected by Israel as fighting intensified with militants after the outbreak of the second Palestinian uprising in 2000. But it seemed unlikely the move could have been undertaken without Hamas' approval.

The group's supreme leader, Khaled Mashaal, said from Damascus, Syria that Hamas was willing to work out a new border arrangement with Egypt and Hamas' rival, moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said that he had ordered his troops to allow the Palestinians to cross into Egypt from the Gaza Strip because they were starving.

Mubarak told reporters at the Cairo International Book fair that when Palestinians began breaking through border in force, he told his men to let them in to buy food before escorting them out.

"I told them to let them come in and eat and buy food and then return them later as long as they were not carrying weapons," he said.

Gaza has been virtually sealed since Hamas seized control of the territory by force in June. Gazans are facing critical shortages of electricity, fuel and other supplies, although they have not yet led to starvation.

Any easing of restriction could help stabilize Hamas' rule

On a personal note my heart jumpt for JOY when I saw this, I regret they had to use bombs so their people could get food etc., I haven't been able to read the whole article to see if anyone was hurt. The Egyptians are taking no offense and the Gaza Palistinans are not only getting supplies and food, but feeling some FREEDOM.

Great to hear some good news re Gaza!! End the illegal blockade NOW!!

Mada my friend , the difference is very clear to all of us who oppose the criminal Zionist regime.
Sadly the supporters of said criminals prefer to muddy the waters and attempt to silence their critics with false claims of anti-semitism ,as is well documented, rather than admit those crimes.
The shame is theirs, not ours.
*hug*

Dear Sophia..you have nothing at all to apologize for. People of every religion have done horrible things to others in the name of their religion and/or their beliefs. There are those who are the very best of their chosen religion and there are those who are the very worst of their religion. You are one of the very best, Sophia and we cannot control the actions of others as much as we would like to at times.

Noted with thanks to Sophia and Sunshine.

This is terrible. How could any government deprive basic human needs to thousand of innocent people? The Israeli government must be very happy - this is what they want: chaos in Gaza inorder for the people to leave their land.

Please, Sophia! Never apologize for other people's crimes. You are helping the Palestinian cause just like us and you haven't done anything wrong. All the contrary! You are helping a lot of people here on care2. I am proud to count you among my friends. I don't feel exactly proud of being a Canadian neither!!! I haven't been since Harper came into power! There is chaos all over the world right now. It seems that we have a bunch of 13 years old at the head of our governments. The biggest part of their being is their ego... Let's just work all together to make this planet a better place to live. Luv ya all!

Noted. Another heaping of reprehensible madness in this world. Politics and religion are historically a cruel mix and an unwelcome irony. Thank you, Sunshine; I am going straight to the campaign from here to be certain I signed and that it was added.

So, instead of a barbed wire fence, the I$raeli$ erected a wall ... it's still a concentration camp and THe I$raeli$ must stop illegally occupying land that does not belong to them.

Thank goodness someone has some sense. You cannot imprison an entire people for the sins of the few. Let common sense prevail and keep the pressure on the aggressors to lift the ilegal blockade.

interesting quote again, partily from the article. Odd I think when it is reversed properly the many sins of the many, being the Israeils and those who have backed them and allowed this. Someone has posted an article from the New York Times that Israel has broken down and is letting them have abit of FUEL, I diidn't even read much more I am so disgusted with them and their actions, including my own country Canada. They have taken lands and made prision camps with walls, that cause torture and suffering. I hope this rings out LOUD to the countries of the world, to those that back Israel, the Eueropean Union, US, Canada, the Bill Gates and Big Corporations of the world that have their products made there, they need to be heavily SANCTION TO SAY THE LEAST AND INTERNATIONAL COURT. People sit back and just do nothing too often, obviously nothing was learned in WW2, it just continues, Lets hope that changes, but we will all have to work hard so it does with the present powers that be. And YES THANK GOODNESS THAT SOME HAVE SOME SENSE, COMPASSION, AND I HOPE MORE FORESIGHT. Please keep signing, the petition, link above, on and off as able, thx., this maybe good nite
