A town sans the luxury of wheels could be common phenomenon in any part of the world. But in Germany it's almost an anachronism. After all isn't Germany all about cars and the autobahn?

I know of a beautiful American town with NO AUTOMOBILES, and it's in Michigan!

Mackinac Island is the truly "all natural" town of America. Limited to transportation of horse and buggy, bicycle or foot, surrounded by water, it has escaped the vast changes of time. Mackinac Island State Park, is honored by National Geographic as one of the ten finest in America. It's gorgeous, and only accessed by boat, ferry or plane. And it's got the best fudge & lilacs in the world! :))

Lots of Big cities have been going that way for years. Try New York. Manhattan.
There is a very popular shopping area in Denver, CO where the are trolies, etc. no cars. Sort of like when one goes to a sport event you park your car somewhere then take a bus to where you want to go in the city. Thereby making the air a bunch cleaner in the city and noise is down a bit in the smaller areas. The secret (do I really need to say this) is public transportation. Even if it's a horse and buggy!

Should you be worrying about who's going to carry your Dolce and Gabbana shopping bags, NEVER MOVE TO A PLACE WHERE CARS ARE BANNED! Such places are only for people who realize that LESS means MORE!

Peace thank you for telling us about Mackinaw Island. There are several islands off of the coast of Maine that have no automobiles too. They are great places to kick bad, breathe clean salt air and watch the harp seals play. Frances

I love Mackinaw Island! This is great, hope we adopt the concept. There really is no reason why we have to have cars in family neighbourhoods. Many accidents happen just going 3o miles an hour, you never see the kids playing out.
Germany is beautiful and Frieberg is a magical Place, lots of old world fairy story houses with turrets. This fit right in.
