American history is dotted with these explosions of violence, whether motivated by politics, racism, or just plain discontent. Here are ten of the worst.

Surprised it doesn't mention Haymarket. Maybe it wasn't one of the worst, just one of the most important.
Still, it's good to remember the 10 they mention! We must never forget the convention.

Clearly both Anna and Mary share the same passion for history that I do--all of it, the good, the bad, the inspiring, the terrible--the fascination is not only in the past but in the knowledge that everything that was, is and that everything which is, was.

My sister was in the process of moving during the riots in L.A, and she sent photos of her old apartment. The entire area had been set on fire. She just barely got out. :(

How sad! :(

Thanks Anna for the Article, and Arild for passing it on.

1932 - Federal troops forcibly dispersed the "Bonus Army" of World War I veterans who had gathered in Washington, DC. They were demanding money they were not scheduled to receive until 1945.
1932: Veterans from WW1, made homeless by the stock market crash of 1929, built a tent city near Washington D.C. while they tried to collect on a promised combat bonus which the government has failed to pay (a situation the US troops in Bosnia can identify with). Rather than pay the money, the government ordered US Cavalry to destroy the tent city. The troops attacked the camp on horseback with drawn sabers, against unarmed men, woman, & children.

This event (guess it wasn't really a riot - just a horrible Incident) was shown as a flashback in the movie Ironweed with Jack Nicholson & Meryl Streep.

Thank you for linking to the story. I agree with Yvonne, the 1932 attack on the vets was a riot, after the attack by the government.

In Britain we largely just grumble and accept our shitty lot these days. The last good riot was the one against the poll tax..an iniquitous vile way of collecting money that involved a poverty stricken prole paying the same as Richard Branson for council services...no wait the wealthy have clever accountants and usually pay "less"than the poor.I admire the French for their displays of passion in response to unfairness.
Stop lying down and taking it...a riot can be a political tool that changes things for the better..but don't set out to kill anyone..thats not acceptable..and is in fact counter productive.

I was also looking for the attack on the WW1 Veterans in 1932. TY Yvonne.

I find it very interesting that all of the "ten worst riots" that have ever occurred in the US occurred between 63-71 and 92-01. I must think however, that there were many other riots that occurred prior to the 60s that were much worse than some mentioned in the article... The gangs of New York, Greens rebellion... I would have to guess that these were by far worse. Nonetheless this is a great article... thanks.
