One Woman's Campaign to Save An Orang-Utan Called Mely, Who Is Chained Up So Paying Tourists Can See Her Misery

Animals  (tags: woman, campaign, orang-utan, tourists, animals )

- 1540 days ago - dailymail.co.uk
Her look seems to plead with you. Mely the orang-utan is a pitiful sight as she sits slumped, depressed and shackled by a chain. The 15-year-old ape was snatched as a baby from her rainforest home by a fisherman who had callously shot dead her mother.

Copy of my submission to the Mail on line relating in part to a person called Jen who had been criticised for complaining about orang-utan boxing!: "Jen no red arrows from me about Orang-utan boxing! Any kind of animal or human exploitation is wrong! Confining dolphins and whales to tiny pools for example no different to keeping a goldfish in a glass bowl intended for floral displays or buying goods made by children or adults in slavery! Sadly when greedy companies make a buck or three out of demolishing forests to plant cash crops to feed factory farm animals divorced from natural feed or convert into so called "green" energy to fuel wasteful transport, we are far more to blame for this crisis than any individual locals seeking to provide for their families in perhaps the only way they know how! The plight of one animal makes the headlines while we kill millions of unwanted pets annually in the US and UK for example or kill many millions of animals in the pursuit of the almighty dollar by pharmaceutical companies and others who exploit animals for spurious medical or cosmetic testing! No life should be dismissed so casually!

Just horrible. She has that look in her eyes that tell you that she is in living hell. Imagine your life chained up like this, like you're being punished. She did nothing wrong!!! The damn fisherman should be thrown in jail for shooting her mom in the first place and thrown in jail some more for abuse!!!! The only thing that'll smarten these idiots up is seizing the animal and jail!!!!!

Any human who tortures or mistreats or neglects an animal causing pain and suffering, dismemberment and/or death, participates in authorized or un-authorized research, with or without federal funding, withholds food & water and/or medical care is guilty of animal cruelty, an offense punishable to the absolute maximum permitted by law.

It is tragic that humans can be so callous. But there is also hope, that Mely and others will be rescued. I have signed petitions to protect these forests from the palm oil industry. Be certain that you are not buying products that contain palm oil.

Why anyone wants to see the misery of any living being is beyond me. I hope Mely is freed soon and I pray the people who have done this to her and those who witnessed it all these years will never have animals of their own in the future.

Quote: "This animal only needs a shred of humanity". Well, let me tell you, if this human who is keeping her captive has even as little as a shred of humanity and/or common sense for that matter not knowing or realizing that this Orang-Utan is a lot smarter then he will ever be, is exactly the reason why these things are happening in the first place. Adding insult to injury that there are still people out there who are actually paying to see this abuse take place is truly beyond my comprehension. It makes me being ashamed sometimes belonging to the human race.

One consolation however, by the time we humans have realized that most if not all aninals are a hell of a lot smarter and better survivors then we will ever be from a natural perspective, we humans will no longer be here to witness that fact.

It is not who will eventually win this war on animal abuse but rather when.

This is a heartbreaker. . . but much as we'd like to go and grab Mely, or pay to take him away, the lady is right ; once you start paying these people in an effort to get the animal away, you've effectively started a business, and it will encourage more and more of the same.

I try really hard to understand the mindset of other cultures and countries - and maybe poverty, to a degree that I don't understand and have never experienced, is what desensitises - in this particular situation?

It doesn't explain Lucky the doggy in the basement, or people who work in the industry of animal testing from capture to torture. . . oh I don't know, it just makes your heart feel like it will burst. I seem to be saying that all the time, but it won't help this poor little chap. Tragic.

I say this time and agin but I just don't get it. How can people just watch an animal suffer. Images of these poor beings just pass though my mind. I am grateful that there is someone working towards her release and hope with all my heart that she is able to release Mely form the living hell that she is stuck in. It seems there should be a law against keeping any animals chained like that day in and day out but that would make too much sense I guess. I look forward to seeing that she is released one day soon.

A petition is probably needed here. I hope Lis can free Mely. Is this fisherman related to the asshole who tied a dog up to a corner white wall and let it starve to death as people came through the art museum "in the name of art?". These creeps need to be charged with animal cruelty. If the cannot make money off their cruelty the will stop. Especially if they are charged for it instead.

So this guy just killed Mely's mother and then took her to use as his sideshow attraction? Some people don't really have respect or regard for animals. It's what you feel in your heart that should count before the thoughts about spinning money. And these tourists...they're so uneducated and obviously torn. They feed her because they feel sorry for her but they're not really helping the situation.

These images are making me cry. Her little face is so pathetic and so sad. Sometimes, on Care 2 I see images that stay with me for a long time. I have taken to cycling for hours, to try and rid myself of the trauma of seeing these images. Many of my friends won't do any care 2 work because they find they cannot bear the images. The only trouble is, that love for animals means that somehow you have to transcend your own sadness, or you cannot help these lovely animals. I DO wish there was more we could do. If only we could all win those Lottery prizes.... Think what we could do! My prayers are with poor Mely that she is rescued.

This is utterly heartbreaking! This man (who uses Mely as his personal side-show money maker) has to sleep sometime. Can't somebody sneak in there & cut that chain & free her? If that's not an option, there must be something that can be done thru the government. This is cruel, abusive and no animal should be kept like this, especially one so intelligent and so much like us. Then, the man who has been holding this wonderful creature as his "captive" should be chained by the neck and publically displayed.

This story is the epitome of everything that is wrong about humans and thier society. The way they have forced animals out of thier natural habitats and into chains or zoo's or lab's ect is just appaling.
We urgently need to put things right to save ourself and the natural world and it must be a collective effort or millions like Mely will go unoticed and will continue to suffer.

As stated by "Mike and Janis" a petition should be set up to help free this gorgeous orang-utan.The Indonesian Govt are as corrupt as hell and don't give a dame about any one any thing and certainly they couldnt give a shit about animals, but the more people hound them the greater chance of sucess.
I advocate the FW who killed her Mother and has kept her a prisoner should be put before firing squad.I would line up to take aim for payback!!

The expression in her eyes - pleading , begging for help. The look of utter devastation , dejection , depression. This is just so cruel and inhumane. I do not understand why the government does not intervene. The shortness of the chain and no bedding for her. This is just so heartbreaking, I love orangutans and to see one being treated in such a manner is just too much to bear.

Add Borneo to list of countries that have a soulless culture. Southeast Asia is just the wort place to be born if you're an animal. Their inability to have any empathy is just astounding. They will torture then kill any animal for any reason. This is a country that gives nothing back to the world in which it exists.

I hope that Mely finds a wonderful forever home that gives her every want and need. Horrible stories like this are popping up more and more. When I read them I get sick. We must take a stand to stop not only the killing, capture and abusive treatment of animals by having very strict laws that punish these creeps with many years in jail when they break the law and abuse animals. This means every country all over the world must follow strict laws pertaining to the treatment of humans and animals.

A group standing out side this mans exhibit holding picture of the poor Mely telling people not to give him their business and that it is cruel to do what he is doing. Why not? Are there any people in that culture that finds this cruelty? If so then they should start shaming him and all businesses that exploit animals after killing their parents. Where does this poor creature sleep, on the wet wood with a two foot chain around her neck? This man should be ashamed of himself, he is not a man, just a slimy insect, but then that is an insult to insects who deserve to be here too. At least insects have a purpose, this owner has no purpose but to exist.

The other aspect of this is educating the tourists who make keeping Mely a viable business...if tourists didn't pay to see her, or feed her, there would be no reason to keep her chained as a mini 'tourist attraction'. We should all be aware of this when we travel in poorer countries and educate other tourists of the negative impacts they may have by giving anyone with a captive animals (other than verifiable animal sanctuaries) even small amounts of money.

moggy w. (119)

This man has kept her chained for 15 years? That means for 15 years stupid, heartless tourists have supported his behavior. As others have noted, if the tourists didn't pay,,there would be no reason to keep her. My question is this: In all of those years, thousands of tourists, all those who said "how sad, how heartless", etc.--WHY DIDN'T ONE PERSON BRING A 'FRIEND' OR TWO AND A ***BOLT CUTTER? We don't need petitions- we need a bolt cutter!!!

If it wasn't for the sick idiots who pay this monster to see her, he would have probably just let her go, or killed her too just like he did her mother. Either way her life would not be a tortured existence on the end of three foot of chain.

It makes me want to go over there with a set of bolt cutters and just free her, why has no one done that in all of these years, hasn't any of the tourists who have visited her thought "Hang on, isn't this cruel, shouldn't we do something or at least phone some organisation????" "No, let's just feed her some food that is going to make her ill and hope someone else helps her in 15 years!!"

I have just looked up to Moggy W's post and I am saying the same thing as her! And although I agree that we shouldn't need a petition, maybe if we had one to send to the Indonesian Government, it may speed her rescue up a bit.

thanks to any and all trying to help this poor cretaure. if i were there, i would have to do something to get her free... probably get in a bucket of trouble, but i wouldnt be able to watch this. Shame on anyone who pays to watch ANY trapped/imprisoned animal. people should be ashamed of themselves.

Der Menschen Affe, Orang Utan, they suffer just like a human and have emotians like a human. why do this for money, have a heart like the Orang Utan, or maybe you don't have one.

I have just spoken to International Animal Rescue and they have told me that they have applied for a permit to go and rescue her, which takes about two months, but..... they applied for it two months ago, so it will be any day now.

They then just have to take it to the police and they will then be able to go and rescue Mely.

Please keep yours eyes open for an update on Mely's story and post a link from here, if I see it first I will do the same.

Please also look at the International Animal Rescue Site, they explain their projects, tell their success stories, have merchandise and sponsoring which help them free animals like Mely, allowing us to sleep easier at night.

Oh, Alison! This is fantastic news! I am indeed going to go to that website and see what is there. I normally do not donate to many sites because of the bureaurocrasy and red-tape involved where more money goes to the executives of the organization and paying for their expenditures and little actually ends up helping those that I want to help (hope that makes sense), but I'll check it out. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

Alison - The Indonesian Government is totally venal and corrupt. Don't take my word for it; we have here on Care2 a most dedicated animal welfare & rights person, by the name of Josie, who was born and raised in Surabaya, and who now lives in West Bandung. Josie can tell you first hand what a s**t hole this country is.

Precious, pitiful soul. The look in her eyes is absolutely heartbreaking!

Elephants in Thailand also suffer partly because of tourists. There have been articles and petitions here on Care2 about these wretched eles who are forced to trudge the noisy, busy city streets far into the night so that their "owners" can make money out of stupid, idiot tourists by using and abusing their animals.

This is so upsetting! Thanks Alison for the update regarding International Animal Rescue. I hope they take this suffering animal away from this cruel monster quickly she deserves to run and play in nature - not chained to a porch for 15 years!!!

Don't they have any protection laws there? WTH! I sure hope alot of people get in on Lis Key's efforts! This is straight up abuse. Ok, we could chain this fisherman, he definitely needs a lesson. The Last line of the article says it all:
Mely may be one of the great apes. Ironically, ALL she needs from us is a SHRED OF HUMANITY!

ORANG UTANS (literally: MEN OF THE FOREST) usually MUST spend the first 7 years of their lives with their caring mothers, who TEACH them what to EAT, how to CLIMB a tree, to FEAR threats like snakes etc. etc.
Consequently at the Rescue Center they have to teach her EVERYTHING NOW....
I LOVE ORANGUTANS!!!!!!!!
The REAL PROBLEM of HABITAT LOSS is due to DEFORESTATION that DESTROYS RAIN FORESTS (30-40 meters tall tree, DIFFERENT SPECIES OF TREES, and PLANTS, BIODIVERSITY) TO MAKE ROOM FOR PALM OIL PLANTATIONS (2-3 meters high palms, MONOCOLTURE).!!!
LET US DO WHATEVER WE CAN FOR THEM ALL TOGETHER!!!!!!!!!!
