It is too difficult to forget some unwanted moments and delete such incidents from our memory, which cause pain and make our life pathetic. US researchers claim it might be possible by consuming one pill.

Interesting for sure, though I do wonder about the implications of using such a technique. How would it change a person ..the possibilties are wide open.

I am sure that I DO want this pill.... and I want it NOW!!!!! I know that I have been enriched in a way by all the painful experiences in my life. I have learned empathy and endurance and understanding... BUT... I also have a brain full of the most disgusting memories!! I would LOVE to have no bad memories, but retain the good changes that those experiences have brought about in me!!! Thanks Anna!

I would definitely not take it or advise anyone else to do so. I would not want to erase, however, painful, the death of my mother, brother or my beloved pets that I have spent to many wonderful days and hours with. It is part of their lives and mine as well.

I'm with Nicky Melville - it would really help me - if one could select certain memories, or to tone them down so that they no longer had such hideous ramifications, decades into the future.

If we had the memories but at say, one tenth strength we could try and help others to avoid what caused us such pain, without being made to suffer for years and years. Without any memory of the event, what would stop its repetition...?

Erasing bad memories has both pros and cons. The memory of a bad mistake can certainly help us to avoid making the same mistake again and therefore has real survival value - and if a person doesn't remember the guilt or the shame or the unhappiness associated with taking a particular action then there's more likelihood that they'll just continue making the same mistake over and over again. But some seriously painful memories really serve no purpose useful enough to compensate for the misery.

From what I've read, this is something that would (if it ever comes to fruition) be used to help people who are experiencing really debilitating problems due to an inability to get past a bad episode - and not just the ordinary stuff that we all deal with.

There's more detailed information about this to be found at:

strange ... pain keeps one grounded if one takes it in the positive way....
for only if one goes through it... be it through painful memories or physical hurt... how would one ever understand it...man has ran away from reality for want of an easy life... look around the destruction.. the lives he has taken... nature which is destroyed...how much more heartless would he want to go? no respect for another life.. n no respect for what he's got. what all can he wipe out?? rather he can choose to make life more simple..
and think of another life, each time a tear rolls down his eyes..

for if man can find strength in his pain.. turning each of his weakness which threaten his peace then he'd have to choose to turn each of these incidents into opportunities to learn to live and let live...
for this has been done before and even now if only he took out time to see the way animals birds fishes live.. a life complete..

This concept is very thought-provoking. I know a lot of my bad memories have made me stronger, more compassionate, better rounded. I, fortunately, have not suffered incest, rape, significant abuse or the like. What would this do for those people? It makes me think of the woman that was gang-raped in Central Park years ago, and suffered amnesia due to the beating they gave her. Was her healing process easier because she could not remember?

Amnesia is sometimes a post-traumatic stress response. Still...I wonder if the brain can ever REALLY forget an event, as opposed to "ignoring" it by blocking it out? This is a fascinating possibility for people who have undergone unspeakable horrors.

I have more than my share of unpleasant memories, but would I want them erased? No. I'll live with my depression, thank you. Life experiences are necessary, and it is up to our brains to decide which memories will be retained and which will be forgotten. Some terrible memories need to be remembered in order for us to be less vulnerable. We cannot learn from our experiences, positive or negative, if we cannot remember them.

I wouldnt take it because being an ego-maniac, I believe that everything that is related to me or my life is good enough and never to be ashamed of; my faults, my dysfunctional family and yes, my painful memories. If they are mine, then they are great and there is noway I'd want them to disappear ;)

thanx Anna for the posting, I would only take it if my Medicine Woman told me it was okay. If I could get rid of a few memories of BS then I couldn't be held back from doing all that I should be doing for my Mother Earth, my earthly brothers & sisters (all life forms) and for my Spiritualness (Love, Happiness, & Light). Blessings, maybe I can find a Spiritual Pill.

We all take our lumps and bumps along life's pathway. What does not kill you will make you stronger. I disagree with wiping out memories. Love and understanding go a long way in helping!

Problem is, Ann, that sometimes those memories do kill - an inability to deal with painful experiences is what so often drives people to suicide.

Has anyone seen the movie "Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind"? It's about a drug that does this same thing, and Jim Carrey is in it. Good movie, but shows the down side to having a pill to do that.......

NO, NO and NO, TRIPLE, MULTIPLE, ENDLESS NO, NO, NO!!!!!

What shapes a human mind? It's all the life experiences, good or bad. PLEASE stop and think for a while, and imagine how mankind would have evolved if such a pill had been invented, let's say, 200 years ago? We would live in a society much similar to the one described in Huxley's "Brave New World".

I feel that if all these "mad scientists" (that's just what they are IMHO - mad) start with a pill which "removes painful memories", we might ALL end up as chemically-lobotomised zombies, with our brains free of any feelings of sadness, despair, revolt, well, you're getting my point dontcha?
