Okunishi Masaru has been on death row in Japan for 40 years. Now 87 years-old, he's desperate for a chance to clear his name before he dies. Will you help him? -- Please ask the Japanese Prosecutor-General to grant Okunishi's request for a retrial.

Since 1972, Okunishi Masaru has been waiting to be executed.

Every morning for the last 40 years, Okunishi has woken up not knowing whether this will be the day that guards come for him, and lead him to the gallows. This unbearable uncertainty is all part of the horror of death row in Japan.

In 1961, Okunishi attended a community get-together in his home town, Minanokai. He took along wine given to him by the elected head of the town, but the wine turned out to be laced with pesticide. Five women died, including Okunishi’s wife and lover.

After being interrogated by police for several days, Okunishi ‘confessed’ to murder. He retracted his confession as soon as trial began, and was acquitted for lack of evidence. But a higher court reversed the decision, and sentenced Okunishi to death.

Okunishi’s lawyers have presented test results showing the chemical that poisoned the women was not the chemical that Okunishi ‘confessed’ to using. But requests for a retrial have been consistently blocked.

Okunishi is now 87 years-old. His health is quickly failing him, but he’s desperate for a chance to clear his name before he dies.

Ask the Japanese Prosecutor-General to grant Okunishi’s request for a retrial

From the Hachioji Medical Prison, Okunishi has thanked Amnesty members for their letters of support. He said “Although I am weak and in hospital, I still have hope that the truth that I am innocent will come out”.

This week, Okunishi is waiting for an official response to his eighth request for retrial. But he’s getting sicker every day. He slips in and out of consciousness and is unable to breathe on his own.

Amnesty has been following this case for many years. We think that an outpouring of international support for Okunishi at this time might finally convince Japan to give him a chance to clear his name.

Please act today and help put an end to Okunishi’s 40-year wait for justice.

Okunishi only wants the chance to clear his name. Will you help him?

Yours in hope,

Rose Kulak
Individuals at Risk Program Coordinator
Amnesty International Australia

PS. Okunishi’s case is beyond cruel. Please act fast to help him see justice before he dies.

Many thanks to all who have, or may, sign this petition. It is fairly obvious to me, (and hopefully you) that Okunishi was jailed for a crime he did not commit. The evidence for such is underwhelming is to say the least. To spend a life in jail for no reason at all must be hell on earth?

Thank you for being part of his release. (If he is released)

you don't need to include your postcode, there's no asterix next to it,
the petition will be accepted without it,
see Zee's comment above.

Thank you for calling on Japanese authorities to grant Okunishi Masaru a retrial.

Very sad, he should be given a new trial with the evidence presented that isn't tainted. So many confess due to interrogation that borders on the verge of torture, or was torturous.

Sorry, but I am unwilling to lift a finger to help any Japanese scum no matter what problems they may suffer..
I saw how my uncle suffered for years until his death 10 years ago, after being tortured, starved and treated as a slave by the Japs during world war two. I also think of the millions of other allied servicemen and innocent civilian men, women and children who suffered the same fate or even worse at the hands of the Japs during that period, and they still refuse to offer any sort of apology for their vile crimes against humanity.
I also give consideration to the thousands of beautiful WHALES those same Japanese scum murder every year for NO REASON other than to satisfy their BLOOD LUST.

Forgive and forget Syd. That was 60 years ago. I do empathise with you. Many unnecessary crimes were committed, not by all japanese people, just the fanatical few. Surely 60 years on, these people should be punished but that will not happen. War is stupid, the atomic bomb was stupid but how many US people dare blame the citizens of Japan for war crimes when the slaughter of thousands of innocent civilians by the US nuclear attack was just as deadly and not necessary?
