I bought 10 bags in black, green and tan. It is so much better carrying my groceries in. Plus you can put so much more in them. Thanks Eric.

I was wondering if anyone had ever thought of the following regarding animals.

Animals truly are much more intelligent & savvy in survival tactics than we will ever be. For instance, do you know of any animal who shops at their own grocery store, buys food in cans, paper, boxes, and the almighty destructive plastic! And, have you seen any animal drive cars, take buses or even roller blade to get from here to there?

The comparison of how animals live strictly off the land compared to how we humans live is mind blowing. Our sense of greed and compulsions to have goes to the extreme of shear selfishness.

Without man on this earth all the animals would survive according to their own plan of survival of the fittist........If an animal dies there are no heroic efforts to keep it alive for the sake of just breathing & their loved ones.

I keep asking what earthly purpose do we serve anyway?

I recently moved to Cambridge (UK) and was dismayed to find the appalling state of the recycling scheme. Not only are there limited materials recycled, but it all has to be separated and put out in plastic bags! I actually have to pick up plastic bags at the store to do my recycling!

Ok! But it has made me do something about it! The local paper has an article about all the complaints on the local garbage collection. Not particularly written from a green point of view, I thought I should reply and point out problems with the local recycling scheme. & whilst at it I've send a copy to the local authorities!

Any suggestions of what else I can do?

Lead by example..use your cloth bags...it will piss some people off (clerks) but that is ok. I use only cloth bags and refuse to take plastic at all. The clerks get so mad sometimes ,,,but it is my money I am spending in their store so I remind them of that . I am paying them money ,,,so whether they think I am right or wrong they still have to put my groceries in the bags I have brought with me . They look at me with disgust when I do not let them wrap my already wrapped meat in plastic...but oh well again lead by example. Might be a nice cottage industry for you to start...make cloth bags. There is enough spare cloth and clothing that can be turned into bags...go for it

Oh and if you make cloth bags and can get your name in the paper for promoting this cause the better for your business and ultimately for the enviroment..just a thought since you asked

Hey! I guess Britain may be better about that! All the stores are actively promoting the sale & use of reusable bags and have either reward schemes for not using plastic bags or even charging for plastic bags - a very good incentive for people who won't do it for the environment! Just a pity our local recycling company is so retarded!

It's amazing that even when the stores charge 5cents per plastic bag peoples still buy them by the dozen when they are at the cash register. The laziness and thoughtlessness of most peoples is astounding. Nothing less than a worldwide ban on plastic bags will do. No reusable bag...too bad! Carry your groceries in your hands. It's high time to stop coddling these lazy peoples.
Oh I get so mad when I see them at the checkout counters. Here in Canada we seem to be especially lazy about plastic bags. All the large stores still carry them, some charge some don't.
BAN PLASTIC BAGS...WORLDWIDE!!! California go!!!

Lee yes here in Canada we are lazy about them ...what also drives me crazy is when people put one tomato in a bag in the veggie dept and then that goes into another bag at the checkout...drives me around the bend. When I am in the vegetable department everything either goes in the cart loose or I use the paper bags provided for the mushrooms..no reason everything cant go into these.

Actually, I guess it depends where you are in Canada. Here in Toronto, most of the stores are very supportive of such green trends. All the larger local stores either charge for the bags, or sell green-bags right at the store, often donating the profits from it towards green causes as well. And not a single clerk at any store has ever acted annoyed when I whip out a green-bag. Maybe the small towns are different, I donno. But I love Toronto for the many efforts to make and keep it green.
Green bags for all!! :)

Hurrah for San Francisco and Los Angeles! They have the right idea, because not many people will switch to cloth bags on their own. It is so hard to get the average American to recycle anything! I hope more happens in Texas soon (and good luck...we are our own country, you know! LOL). Good post, Eric

Yes, we waste - plastic, food, oil, energy, land, water - the list goes on and on.

I only know of one use of plastic bag, and that is doggy poop. Any alternatives?

This will not continue forever. People are beginning to wake up. Drive home the point that plastic comes from oil, therefore wasting plastic drives up the price of gasoline.

I commented on this post about making every plastic recyclable. I was told that would require a large investment, and corporations are not sure if it would pay off. Unfortunately, the fact that people don't recycle what they could is proof it would not pay off.

I ask you - if so many people are as liberal as you claim, how come they don't recycle? Based on how people really behave, I'd say the country is at least 90% pro-Bush.
