STOP FUR TRAPPING IN THE LAS VEGAS VALLEY

As reported by Sharon Seltzer of the Petition Site on January 18, 2012, http://www.care2.com/causes/wildlife-official-shocks-board-with-trapped-bobcat-video.html , An appointed member of the Clark County Advisory Board (CAB) to Manage Wildlife filmed himself abusing/torturing a trapped bobcat and posted the video online. Residents of Clark County were shocked and outraged by the cruel video. Most residents didn't even know the barbaric activity of trapping still happens right in their "backyard."
Commissioners were so upset by the video and outcry from the public has been so loud, there will be an agenda item and discussion about the appointment of Tracy Truman, the trapper, at the FEBRUARY 21, 2012, Clark County Commission Meeting. (UPDATE - PLEASE NOTE: THE TRUMAN AGENDA ITEM HAS BEEN HELD UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.) Truman should be removed from the board (which is already stacked with trappers as 4 out of 7 CAB members are trappers). However, that do not go far enough to address concerns of Clark County residents.
John L. Smith, columnist with the Las Vegas Review Journal said it best in his 2008 article titled: “Trapping, a frontier tradition, no longer makes sense in Southern Nevada.” WE AGREE! ( http://www.lvrj.com/news/36287979.html )
Many documented incidents show dogs, cats, and other unintended animals have been brutally caught in traps (see Trailsafe.org website). Currently, trappers are NOT required to have ID on traps and are only required to check traps every 96 hours (4 days!) and according to the NV Dept of Wildlife, it's a common violation to NOT check traps within 96 hours!
Fur trapping is a lucrative hobby with Bobcat pelts going for as much as $1,100/each. So, trapping is not a sport - it's About Money. Note: many sportsmen (hunters & fishermen were also shocked and dismayed by this video).
Nevada Wildlife belongs to ALL Nevadans yet, ONLY hunters, trappers, ranchers are tasked with making decisions to MANAGE OUR WILDLIFE. We DEMAND to have a say in Nevada’s Wildlife management. With over 2 million people in Clark County, many who love to recreate all over Clark County including within the Mt. Charleston/Lee Canyon area & within the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation area it is a public safety issue for people and their pets to allow trapping in Clark County to continue.

IMPORTANT UPDATE!!! Nevada Voters for Animals has requested that the New Clark County District Attorney, Steve Wolfson, who will be sworn in on February 21, 2012, personally review the Tracy Truman investigative file regarding possible prosecution for the shocking Bobcat Video. The DA's office has received the file and we pray justice prevails in this case.
