No School Make-up Days in PA!

February 5-6, 2010 a near record-breaking snowfall covered most of Southwestern PA. Many local residents went without heat, electricity, transportation, water, and food. As of Wednesday, February 10 more snow has fallen. Residents are still without the basic essentials needed to resume normal activities. The City of Pittsburgh has asked for outside assistance in helping to clear snow from the roads, at times calling on average citizens to help plow snow covered streets. Governor Ed Rendell even issued a State of Emergency stopping mail delivery on Saturday, February 6, 2010. Four-foot high, towering snow drifts block sidewalks and bus stops. Two-lane roads are reduced to narrow, one lane strips. There is simply nowhere to put the mounding snow.
Local and State officials have repeatedly asked residents to stay inside their homes and to stay off the roadways. Government offices, courts, and other official businesses have been closed. These offices are not required to make up these missed workdays. However, the Pennsylvania school code is requiring all PA schools to make-up any missed school days regardless of the treacherous and hazardous conditions. This is not right. We are asking for a waiver. Allow city officials to clear roads, sidewalks, and bus stops before sending small children out onto icy streets to catch an early morning bus. Do not punish the local schools by forcing them to relinquish their spring breaks and summer vacation to keep their student body safe from the ice and snow.
Keep our students safe at home until roads and schools are safe! No make up days!
