|His face and beard covered with thick clay paints, this warrior from the Mt. Hagen region of Papua New Guinea proudly displays his heritage. Two dried Lorakeet birds adorn either side of his colorful woven cap. On top, ferns and the tail feathers from two Lesser Birds of Paradise flow in the breeze. After two to three decades of Western influence in the highlands, much of the traditional New Guinea culture has been lost. This picture was taken during an annual "Sing Sing" (festival) when tribes gather to compete in traditional dress and dance competitions.|
