In Bali, nearly every day is celebrated with offerings to the Island spirits. Walking along the earthern walls of the village rice paddies, these women are carrying food to celebrate the anniversary of a nearby temple. Women spend much of each day preparing the colorful rice cakes, fruits and decorations which they sometimes stack 4 to 6 feet (1.2 to 1.8 m) high to carry on their heads. In many villages, every intersection, rice paddy and doorway receives a daily offering of rice, marigold flowers and incense. In this way, the islanders help to keep happy the spirits they believe are responsible for accidents, crop harvests and the health of villagers.
