The polar bear is the only member of the bear family to be considered a marine mammal. The polar bear's scientific name is Ursus maritimus which means "sea bear". Polar bears are at home on land and in the water. They are strong swimmers and have been timed at six miles per hour. A polar bear's forepaws are partially webbed to assist it in swimming. - photographer, Dan Guravich.
