This bright red snake was observed as it slithered through the desert in search of food. This snake is in the Coachwhip family and is non-venomous. While they are a common sight on Big Bend area highways throughout the Spring and Summer months, they are wary of humans and difficult to photograph. If disturbed, they may become aggressive and move toward humans in a very serpent like manner with their head several feet off the ground -- with every intention of biting! -- Jeff Heinatz, photographer.
