I had been snowshoeing and following this bull elk in Banff National Park for almost an hour when it decided to bed down in this grove of spruce and fir trees. After photographing it from a few different angles, a gust of wind started to blow the snow off the trees in behind the elk, and I quickly snapped off two shots, producing this image of an elk in the winter snow. - photographer, John E.
